jayseven Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 And I don't really know where to start. I don't game. My only real priority is that it has a great battery life, isn't too heavy, has a decent sized screen... Er... yeah. Any tips on where I should start to look?
nightwolf Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I was going to suggest a notebook but you watch tv on your laptop far too much (why you don't connect it to a tv is beyond me but alas I kid :P) I'll suggest ebuyer.
Nolan Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Best advice is go to a store and look at anything you might be interested in, something may look good online but you hate it in person. Ebuyer has some worthwhile deals, as does http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Laptops/Laptops/
RoadKill Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Since I know you're always strapped for cash, here's a way to get a good laptop and make your money go further, in a fairly little known way - Dell Outlet: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&lob=INSP&s=dfh Just sort by price or whatever
McPhee Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Dell 14z from Amazon, £399. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0036TGP7O/ref=nosim/?tag=hotukdeals-21 You can get more powerful machines for the money, but they won't have 8 hours of battery life and they'll be a bit heavier. It depends what you use it for though, you might have need for something with more grunt.

He doesn't need a powerful machine if he's only streaming stuff online and internet browsing.

GeeKay Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I hear two manufacturers here that I say avoid like the plague. Dell and Lenovo. Utter crap components in lappies and awful after sales service. The amount of problems I see and have to try and fix with these brands are unbelievable. Perhaps it's just due to the huge uptake of them and that's the most type that I see but I'm not impressed. Get yourself an ACER, they have a huge range of specs to suit anyones budget and are far more stable machines.
Cube Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Be sure to get the longest warranty with an ACER. Loads of people I know have had one (including me) and they all started failing after a year.
GeeKay Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 The trouble with laptops is that people use them as often as a desktop. That really was never the purpose of a laptop. Sadly they don't have the same air flow as a large cavity desktop, therefore, prone to breaking done after constant usage. I know people like the portability and the space saving of them, but if you are a constant user, do consider a desktop instead.
