Rowan Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 *sigh* Another reason why I wish I made it into a London uni, would have been perfect opportunity to try out the 3DS. I can only hope Nintendo do an additional tour closer to release to the shopping centres (hopefully Brighton). Can't wait for people's comments about the handheld

ReZourceman Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 There's another, public tour in March. Oh blimey "public tour"....are the stock levels so low on this thing that thats what they're calling the launch? :p
IAmMarti Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Oh blimey "public tour"....are the stock levels so low on this thing that thats what they're calling the launch? :p hahaha! Public tours are crap and you will get less time imo
Retro_Link Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Geoff speaks to Reggie in NYC about the 3DS http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/113?ch=1&sd=1 Reggie and Geoff are always so awesome together! Geoff brought it up in the Bonus Round, but now he asks Reggie... Steel Diver a full priced game?!... Really Reggie, Really?! Some people say they'll be turning off the 3D and don't see what it adds. 6 Augmented Reality games come with it! Didn't know that! I REALLY hope Nintendo and other developers release more cards over the year, perhaps including them in with their games occasionally... is that what's expected to happen?
Adthegreat Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I REALLY hope Nintendo and other developers release more cards over the year, perhaps including them in with their games occasionally... is that what's expected to happen? It would be a bit strange to put so much focus on the cards and then never do anything with them ever again. I eagerly anticipate hearing from the people who go to the 3DS events this weekend, just so I know what is in stock for me next week.
Retro_Link Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 It would be a bit strange to put so much focus on the cards and then never do anything with them ever again.Yeah but that's just the type of thing Nintendo is guilty of doing! I actually want my 3DS as a complete surprise come launch. I can't wait to have the thing turn up in the post, un wrap it and give it a blast!
david.dakota Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 It would be a bit strange to put so much focus on the cards and then never do anything with them ever again. If Nintendo play AR right it could be the answer to Reggie's disposable games problem: free to the consumer, quick fire entertainment. Now, imagine advertisers get on board with AR games with these, posters, billboards, box art, insert cards and even the weekly shop having AR games . What would be cooler than flipping open the 3DS, pointing it to a poster in the street and that poster just come to life in a brief platform level - now that's an advertising opportunity, drawing people right into your advert like never before. Nintendo could, quite rightly, charge a premium for such stuff - its win all round; advertisers get really direct audience, gamers get free games and Nintendo a share of the advertising revenue. I actually want my 3DS as a complete surprise come launch. I can't wait to have the thing turn up in the post, un wrap it and give it a blast! I may give Zelda a wide berth tomorrow for this very reason. I'll happily just mess with the menus and stuff.
IAmMarti Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 cant wait to come home tomorrow to find out all the gossip on how its being run. I also cant wait cause I am seeing the loves of my life next saturday <3 Nintendo and my boyfriend <3
Serebii Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 AR is probably one of the things I'm excited most for in regards to the 3DS
Cube Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Just waiting at the event now. Seems surprisingly well organised. The first part of the event was strange. 3D took a bit of getting used to - you kind of need to focus on it and adjust the slider to a comfortable level. It took me around half of a SSF4 round to get the correct settings. One I was in "the zone" it looked amazing. I managed to play SSF4, Pilotwings, Ridge Racer, Super Monkey Ball, Mii Maker, AR and Face Raiders. I'll post more later.

ReZourceman Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Nice one. So 3D worked well for you Cube? PS tell uz abowt da gamez.
IAmMarti Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 do people think its worth me taking my two pairs of glasses for a test? One normal and one is tinted blue. Im curious about the glasses thing.
Adthegreat Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I'm pretty sure that normal glasses don't affect the 3D, and the blue glasses shouldn't really make a difference. It might be worth it to take them anyway, since I don't wear glasses and I also haven't tried a 3DS yet, so I don't really know what I am talking about
ShadowV7 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 please explain how it was run, life if they just point you to a booth or you walk around or... >_< tell us all! I cant wait till next saturday! I'm pretty sure you enter a room, and go where you want.
Cube Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 please explain how it was run, life if they just point you to a booth or you walk around or... >_< tell us all! I cant wait till next saturday! In short: - Introduction with over-the-top wording (even the lady in the tight clothing who was saying it though it was rather silly and knew herself that it was very cringe-worthy. - People playing out SSF4 and Resident Evil (unfortunately, I completely forgot that my phone has a HD camcorder) -A trailer and a message from Wossy. - First room. There were stands with all the "gamer" games: Zelda, Steel Driver, Pilotwings, SSF4, Resident Evil Mercenaries, Ridge Racer and Pro Evo. There are about 5-8 consoles for each of the games. You get 10 minutes in this room. - Second Room was the more "casual" stuff: Nintencats, Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball, Mii Maker (the Mii it made for me looked....special), Face Raiders, the AR games and a few video-only demos (I had a quick glance and saw a few clips from Paper Mario and Mario Kart). 10 minutes in here. Then it was over.

Cube Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 How many people were there per time slot? About 20ish, although there were enough empty places for people who didn't get a ticket to join.
Adthegreat Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 About 20ish, although there were enough empty places for people who didn't get a ticket to join. I was expecting more, sounds good. Hopefully not many people in my group are Zelda fans
Link83 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I was planning to go tomorrow, however now im not so sure its worth it Considering that you have to be over 18, book tickets in advance, and bring photo ID just to get into the venue in the first place it seems like a lot of work for just 20 minutes playing a 3DS (10 minutes in each room)...were there any freebies?
Cube Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 ...were there any freebies? No freebies. The event was really well put together, it's just a big shame they over estimated the amount of people who were going - they could have easily gotten everyone into hour-long slots and given everyone 25 minutes in each room. I felt it was worth the time/cost (£3.30 train and 25minutes travel each way), mainly because I was really sceptical about the 3D. I was expecting more, sounds good. Hopefully not many people in my group are Zelda fans TBH, with the amount of time you have Zelda is probably one of the worst ones to go for.

I don't think I would go if it was a long journey, but luckily it is only about 20 minutes each way, so I don't have anything to lose. The 3D is the real reason I'm going so it doesn't really matter which game I end up playing. Thanks for the tip though, I may just avoid OoT altogether, so that I have a bigger surprise if/when I buy it.
david.dakota Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I went to the Manchester event - (after mush pleading) managed to get a great pic of myself and the 'hooded chainsaw man' from Resident Evil. After having a brief play, I'm happy to report that this device will blow you away. A few thoughts. The 3D works - and works well. I found that as I approached the unit, it took just a blink for my eyes to adjust. The 'sweet spot' is quite tight, anything more than head tilt and you'll loose the effect - but in fairness I very quickly adjusted to moving myself rather than the 3DS. The 3D is affected by both horizontal and vertical movement. The 3D slider works - there is a slight delay in its effect; its not a gradual change, it seems to wait until you've stopped moving the slider and then flicks out to your setting. Personally, I didn't notice a huge difference in the gradients of the 3D - but that could be my own eyes. Speakers Although a lot of background noise hindered an accurate assessment; my initial impressions are that the internal speakers will be comparable to the DS Lite. Comfort and controls. The 3DS feels slightly chunkier than a DS Lite. Shoulder buttons are much improved over the DS Lite. The slider is a f*cking revelation (sorry, mods), although the octagonal directional support is missing. Found the D-pad a little difficult to use effectively - will probably end up being a quick menu in most games. Games. I spent just a couple of minutes on Zelda, RE Mercenaries, Ridge Racer and Icarus. Zelda looked pretty nice, but some blandness to it in places and some corner cutting (2D vines hanging over a ledge etc) Ridge Racer was pretty impressive. The depth and distance is nice, some neat visuals (driving under the tail of a plane). Gameplay a bit shallow for my tastes. RE Mercenaries looked exceptional. Couldn't maneuver as well as I would have liked (ie, I died) but thats a learning curve with the controls. Kid Icarus Uprising was the standout title for me. It looked sublime, some nice depth and art. The stylus was not available, and finger control a bit loose. I suspect the way we'd hold the console with stylus might push the unit out of the sweet spot though - I think i'll dig out the original DS phat thumb shoe. Rolling footage. Mario Kart, Star Fox - 3D works well. Animal Crossing had depth but just didn't stand out. Snake Eater looked nice, really nice. Sky 3D also looked impressive - but a comment did suggest you'd need their top-tier package to view content (not that we expected otherwise). Built in software Face Raider Phenomenally good fun. Some nice - and clever - animations going on. 3D effect apparent, but not that strong. Difficult to maneuver (the 3DS was tethered to the table!). 3D camera. For obvious reasons, these were not the most detailed of photos, but the 3D effect was obvious. AR Games. An absolute highlight for me. The 3D effect was nice - I had the dragon game - moving around the table again not that easy, not only tethered but a table light in the way. I wasn't expecting much from AR games if I'm perfectly honest, but I was totally blown away. If you're going to an event, make sure you have a go. I was expecting more Apparently, the Manchester morning sessions were extremely busy with queues out of the door and down Portland Street. Later sessions, like mine, had around 20 too.
