Guest Jordan Posted November 13, 2008 Share Posted November 13, 2008 I currently have Freeview in my new flat, but... I only get 15 channels rather than the 60 something that is normal. Its due to the fact that i have a shared aerial and signal boosters apparently do not work with Freeview so that rules that out. I have a HDTV with a spare HDMI port, so I figured I might go for Sky+ HD. I just wondered if anyone has any experience with it and if its worth buying over freeview? Plus you can afford it (probably...) comfortably right? You might aswell. I adore Sky. Theres just tonnes of stuff thats like "ooooh, thats cool" and such. Can you justify £60 a month just for TV channels? I'd end up going for just: News, Entertainment, Music, Movies 1 and the HD addon, which is like £39 a month. It was £10 when it first came out (unless you wanted it without the Sports/Movie packages, but without those it's even more pointless). The main problem was that it looked great when you were looking at how great it is, but when you're watching a show you don't really notice that much. With many consoles having DVD upscalers and whatnot, I'd certainly say it's true that the jump for video from SD to HD isn't anywhere near as noticeable as it is with games. DVDs will stick around because they're cheap, it's the only reason i find myself buying them still. I'm gonna be going Blu for my new releases, shop around and stuff like Iron Man can be had for a couple of quid more than the DVD. It depends what you're after then really. If you're happy with the freeview range on channels then look at Freesat, if not then Sky. Both will boost your signal by the same amount. One thing i will say about Freesat though is the range of channels isn't great and only the BBC actually have a HD channel on there at the moment. That Guy Posted November 14, 2008 Share Posted November 14, 2008 You should have got it last month! Boxes were half price. I just got it and I am VERY impressed. Football looks stunning to be honest. I'm surprised at just how good the picture is. Nat Geo and Discovery are now 2 of my favourite channels. If you can afford it I say go for it. Just waiting on the pre/post-Christmas price drop on the player Well I have a 32" and since it's not really large enough to really warrant a 1080p resolution I'd say I'm probably viewing a similar thing (Casino Royale on BD) but maybe not the additional contrast ratio / colour depth a better TV provides (cracking TV though, still). It's much less obvious a jump than with games, but that's probably because you're interactive with games and are panning the camera yourself, so it seems more noticeable. There still aren't enough HD channels though, and the ones there are often don't have the best TV shows on them. It's probably because of the way they're filmed or whatever, but it's pretty annoying. If you went for Sky+ HD then it would probably be worth it for you to get the triple play package: TV, Phone and BB. I hear there's plans for Sky+ HD customers with Sky Broadband to get a video on demand service in the next few months. Not sure if you'll be able to get the Sky LLU Broadband package where you are though, you'll have to check it out. I've also heard that after Sky cut the HD box to half price they ran out for the rest of the year so you might have to get a refurbished box instead of a new one.
