Blackfox Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Hey all, I'm after a replacement to AVG Its been pissing me off recently - I'm sure it makes my computer load unbelievably slow on startup, and its stopped updating. So, any suggestions?!
Cube Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 By any chance does your updating window sometimes refuse to close?
darksnowman Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 My AVG has been dicking about with the updates lately. It seems to update then at the end it says it couldn't access the update server.

Supercube Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 There's a new version to 7.5 available if that's the one yu're having problems with. It's version 8 and is also in a free downloadable form if it's just the antivirus you need. Don't worry if it prompts you about uninstallation of previous versions as it will do it automatically if you let it. You may have to uninstall the AVG spyware too as it's all included this time. http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe
Sanchez Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html Antivir has good detection rates these days but I haven't used it in a long time so I can't comment on how its improved in other areas.
Colin Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 My AVG has been dicking about with the updates lately. It seems to update then at the end it says it couldn't access the update server. I just installed AVG 8.0 today (installing it over version 7.0), and I'm getting the same error also when I try to update. Really annoying, as I don't like seeing a red explanation mark on my toolbar.

Also, make sure there are no traces of your previous version anywhere.
Ramar Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 I think AVGs servers must be having a few problems because my update kept receiving errors too.
Colin Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Problems all sorted now, and it wasn't a restart problem oddly enough. Guessing they just have problems with their servers then currently.
DCK Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Installed AVG 8 just now and it seems to work fine. I recommend googling to find how you install it without the LinkScanner feature, as apparently that makes a performance hit.
