WiFi Limitations

Having looked at the fun but limited WiFi options on DS, i'm wondering if Nintendo will have more features for the Revolutions WiFi features.

As I see it, DS WiFi needs to consider hotspots may have many people using the bandwidth and therefore cannot risk data being slowed (so only basic features will be used on DS). Rev is a home console and therefore users shouldnt be overloading the data traffic.

thoughts?

WiFi is local area network, if you are at home, you will simply (or could) use a private home router; or the one that is nearest... unless you live right next door to a Micky D or something or if you have many revs or PC's.

I really don't think it would be too bad, since there are broadband wifi gaming routers for Xbox and PS2 by companies like linksys and i've heard they work pretty well.

Nintendo will have learned with Mario Kart alone that this isn't the type of service users are wanting. We want to play games with who we want. We want some sort of communication (preferably voice chat). We want a universal friends list and just one name for every single game.

They must be able to make it better for the Revo, it's got the power to do it. Why not do it? Copy Xbox Live and I'll be happy. I don't mind payingg £30 a year for a good online service. The £30 I spent on XBL this year is the best gaming thing I've bought this year!

Nintendo is keeping it this "simple" so the japanese would play online. The japanese are scared by online, they think they'll instantly get some wierd porn freak trying to get their email address or stuff like that. That's why they've put this sort of parental friends only lock on their online strategy. Japanese haven't gotten on the online train yet. But I hope they change it for revo. I don't mind mariokart having this friends only lock, since the online portion is so limited anyways.

Nintendo will have learned

Ha! If only.. If there's one thing that Nintendo's bad at, it's listening to what its supporters want (well, except in the case of Twilight Princess, of course ;) ). Nintendo thinks it knows what we want, and I wouldn't be surprised if it sticks with the same formula for all DS games. I just hope the Revolution will be different.

They listened about Metroid hunters, and decided to put it online.

He meant 'Will learn' because not being able to choose the friends you want to play with.. it shows you could have a more fun variety in stranger play in worldwide mode.

TBH Mario Kart is the first of many online games to come. You all expect too much if you want their first attempt to be perfect.

I can see their wifi connection maturing and growing as it get's older, it's not even out yet and you are complaining.

This is Nintendo were talking about, so they probably wont take full advantage of what they could do. Mario Kart online could be better, but its still awesome and very simple apparently. However hearing that theyll have videos, demos and DS demos could show that Nintendo is going the right way.

they are limiting the features because they want the WiFi usage to penetrate consumers as early/many as possible. They could put in more features and release it in spring, but then not as much people will get it than christmas time. And if they wait till next year, its obviously too late.

The more penetration it gets to the consumers, the easier it is for them to buy future WiFi games.

There are loads of wi-fi hotspots though. Clubs, pubs, cafes coffee bars, a few music shops, not to mention all the McDonalds spots, as well as the game retailers spots coming.

I can think of better things to do in pubs...

The whole WiFi thing should be good. But i really cant see the WiFi stations thing happening in all the local places. If it does, i think i would be disappointed to be honest.

Dont get me wrong, i love my video games, but i also am a big fan of physical activity. So i would see this thing breeding a generation of kids who go out of the home to play games... and yeah. the problem escalates.

Man. i sound like a parent or something... but give me playing frisbee with my friends at the beach anyday.
