Guest Jordan
This is insane. USB 3.0 is being introduced from next year, with speeds of 4.8 gigabits per second. That... is mad. Thoughts? :p Source: http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/09/19/120235&from=rss

triforce_keeper
So what does that mean? Can anyone post possibilities as I don't really understand USB etc
Caris
Copying say 10 movies from a memory stick to your PC would take something like 7 minutes with Vista or so mabey? It would take less than a minute with USB 3.
Guest Stefkov
Read this on Engadget today. Sounds great.

Twozzok
How fast is normal PCI? Will USB 3.0 PCI cards be viable? EDIT: slot != card
McPhee
Im sure USB 3.0 PCI-E x1 cards would be viable, can't see it only being on new computers (and PCI is being phased out anyway)
Guest Jordan
The only reason this thing is so fast is because they're using fibre optic connections as well as copper, this means... well its very fast. With PCI-E 2 coming out eventually and PCI being replaced slowly with PCI-E (i have no idea where i was going with this, so i'm stopping mid sentence!) Twozzok
Ah, ok. Just as a side note, whats the transfer rate of PCI? (I t6hink thats the correct temrinology)
DCK
PCI has a peak transfer of 266 MB/s, USB3 is apparently 600 MB/s. New mobo time indeed...
Shino
The only reason this thing is so fast is because they're using fibre optic connections as well as copper, this means... well its very fast. With PCI-E 2 coming out eventually and PCI being replaced slowly with PCI-E (i have no idea where i was going with this, so i'm stopping mid sentence!) PCI-E 2?!! You're breaking my balls here! The bandwidth in PCI-E is still far away from being obsolete (and even AGP is still good enough for most GPUS).
McPhee
yes, but theres money to be made and stupid geeks to exploit
Shino
I just informed myself a bit more, and there's not only a PCI-E 2.0, but also a PCI-E 3.0 planed for 2009! But thankfully, they are all backwards-compatible, and so should be treated more like revisions than a new (money sucking) technology.
