This isn't actually a question about either, but it's more about your wiis. I noticed it a very long while ago, but have finally decided to ask if it happens to any of you as well.

Basically, I use a wireless router and my wii connects to it, but whenever I look at my log, it seems that my wii(which is in wiiconnect24) disconnects and reconnects like every 8-12 minutes, does anybody have any idea why this is?

(i know this probably should have been in that sticky, but i was afraid it'd be overlooked :()

Here's an example in fact;

Just a standard energy saving thing, It doesn't need to be connected all the time, so it just connects every 10-ish minutes and checks for messages.

Yes, but mine keeps saying blocked by DoS protection. Altough I don't seem to have any problems with my Wii, i.e recieving email and updates etc...

I have another question.

Does the wii, router, and cable modem take up a lot of electricity, I would like to leave it on 24/7 but i'm worried about the electric bill.

Thanks for the reply Cube, I feel like an idiot, I forgot it doesn't show when stuff disconnects, and so I assumed the wii was staying connected and just disconnecting and reconnecting for some reason every 10 minutes.

Lillster, for electrcity usage I guess that depends on your modem, router and wii. Well, the wii apparently doesn't use very much, and mine has been left on since the 9th of december, because my mum saw the blue light and thought it was still on and turned it off in the morning.

I forget the wii's power consumption, but you could probably find it from a quick google, it's something like 10W in standby? That's less than most energy saving light bulbs, and ALOT less than regular light bulbs(usually found from 40-100W).

I tend to leave the router on all the time also, that takes up about 12.5W if I'm not mistaken? Yours may be different though.

My modem plug says Output 10V, 1.2amp on it, so again if I've worked it out right, thats about 12W power consumption. As for the DoS stuff, I have no idea whats going on there.

Well that's the first I've heard of any overheating errors, though my Wii does get rather warm. BGS, I remember I found a page once that I can't find anymore, and I think the guy had actually measured the power consumption of it in various states, and it was fairly accurate and low, I just wish I could find it again!

I'm sure if the Wii is on its on all the time so that could work.

aren't the im's stored on a server? (like emails for example) this would be better for people that have the standby internet off (like me), you could just grab all the im's when your wii is on (and nicely cooled ;) )

Haven't been able to test this since nobody has added me yet.

Update: will test this tonight since librarian is going to add me, but if anyone has tried this before, please reply ;)

I wonder if it really is only 10W. The side of mine seems pretty warm all the time.

Well, of course it warms little bit because fan is off. But it isn't anything that could even damage Wii's components, because even your PCs innards are *much* hotter when computer is on.

Afaik, the Wii updates itself every 10 minutes internet wise, when in stand by... hense messages take an eon to send.

Isn't anyone having that Wii overheat problem that fucks up the Wii GPU? I'll have to trade mine in because i of the deffect. I know it's caused by the Wireless card inside of the Wii, because it's working 27/7 and the fan is stopped unless the wii is on.

I'm talking about this:

http://wii.qj.net/Wii-overheat-causes-video-output-error/pg/49/aid/77236

That must be what is wrong with mine! maybe it could be solved by turning off wiiconnect when the wii is on stand by?

but then you have the problem that you have to change the settings everytime you want to use the everybody votes channel because for some reason it says wiiconnect is off, even though you have only set it to be off when the console is on standby.

I have noticed how hot my wii is on the side of it, and even how hot my gamecube memory card was once when I got it out.

EDIT

Can you buy fans to go on the back like you can for the 360?! (i know that gets much much hotter.)

EDIT NUMBER TWO

http://blogs.ign.com/Peer-IGN/2007/03/16/49487/ another link which highlights the problem I have of black screens, when loading channels and it just stopping. hmmm the mystery continues...

I call bollocks on that one, how else do you explain my Wii's graphics card malfunctioning? It's artefacting like fuck and the only real explanation is that the Wii is overheating when it's on connect 24.

Yeah I with you as well. I won't argue that PC's are miles hotter, but they aren't on all the time, like the wii effectively is. Also would suspect that PC's have miles more powerful fans than the wii's.

I've turned wiiconnect24 on my wii, to see if it helps my problems which I have expected have been heat related.

also PC parts are designed to withstand so much heat, whereas the Wii's most likly arnt

however... whos gonna send you a message when your are asleep? theres no need to keep it on overnight and surly ull get the messages avaliable when you next logon

This is why i would like to know the actual use of leaving standby internet on.

I know that the channels might not work properly (but it's easy to turn it on for a while) but does having standby internet off affect the mii plaza and messaging services?

There must be a way to fix this right? I mean, it's even hotter in standby then when it's on completely

I have this problem too so I've sent in my Wii.

did you leave standby internet on or off?

just trying to see if the 'myth' of standbye internet overheat is true or not :D

I'll say it is true...the left hand side of my wii (or the bottom if you have it flat) was always always hot, the last few days I have been feeling it every so often at night, during the day...etc..and it has always been hot, when in standby I've turned off the standby connection, feeling it now it is stone cold.

My only wonder is about messages and miis. But I do have some insight into it, when I was at my dads for xmas he has a wireless router but its not always on.

I remember I went to my mii channel and some miis had been sent by people on here and then a message popped up saying the said miis had been sent but that there were more to come and check back later...I did and miis did come. So maybe that is what would happen?

I'm wondering the same thing. But i've pm'ed some users on here to add me, and i'm having standby intenet OFF all the time. So if i'm able to receive messages and mii's ... i don't see the point of having it on ... unless you like blue flashing lights ...

I'm GUESSING (hoping) everything is done trough a server of some kind (much like a mail server) and that your wii simply checks for new stuff from time to time. Besides, i don't think that mii's and messages are big in size.

I'll keep you posted on the whole mii/message vs standby thing if you're interested...

Another possibilty is that they are stored localy and are sent when both users are online... but yet again ... another wild guess...

My Wii is always warm when on stand by, but when it's switched on there's barely any heat whatsoever even coming out the back of it.

same here dude, that's why it's off for now...
