  1. Yes you will need a Y Cable because it is not self powered (doesn't plug into the wall) and you don't want a micro USB Cable, just a standard USB Y cable. No it doesn't have to be USB 3, since the Wii U only sports USB 2 ports anyway, but pretty much all new USB HDDs these days are USB 3 anyway (which is backwards compatible), so you might as well go for a USB 3 one (besides, chances are that you'll probably end up using it on the next Nintendo console as well, so the extra speed will likely get used eventually). Poor guy can't catch a break. At this rate, his health will force him to retire before his investors do It has been like that for well over a year now. Nothing new (and I for one am happy to see them acknowledge the importance of those independent games that they've "resorted" to! They're not "pitiful", "lesser" games!!) After all, Minecraft was one of those "lowly" indie games at one point... Edit: Oh hey! Nintendo Land managed to sell another million and a bit last year! That's pretty surprising considering that it was not bundled!
  2. And where are they supposed to magic this new console (and software lineup) from? You guys talk of market realities, but you don't understand R&D realities. Consoles take time to develop, they cant just be magicked out of nowhere! And for those of you who might point to short-lived consoles like the Xbox or the Saturn, you all forget that unlike SEGA and MS, Nintendo have 2 (now 3 actually!) platforms to support! They simply can't develop that many hardware platforms (and all of that launch software) at the same time, while also supporting their existing platforms (which is why they always wind down support for their existing hardware, leaving them with massive software droughts, shortly before switching focus to their new generation of hardware). The reason why the next handheld will be coming out in 2017 and the next console in 2018 is because they have to come out then. They can't get new hardware out sooner (not to mention how mindbogglingly idiotic it would be to introduce the New3DS this year if they were just planning on dumping it next year - see early 90s SEGA for why that is an incredibly bad idea). The New3DS exists in order to buy them time to continue getting the 4DS (or whatever they call it) ready. It serves exactly the same function that the GBC and DSi did during their respective generations, it is arriving at the same point in the 3DS' lifecycle as the DSi did during the DS' lifecycle and will last for roughly the same length of time as its predecessor. Then the next console will follow shortly after the next handheld, just like it always does.
  3. No you're just reading too much into it. He's basically saying that they intend to continue supporting it like they would for any of their previous consoles, despite the low hardware sales. You're not getting a successor any time soon (and how could they? What would even replace it!?). They've got their first QoL device coming out in late 2015/early 2016, then the 3DS successor probably in early 2017, then probably the Wii U's successor in 2018. They can't work on everything at the same time! It is laying the groundwork for their future. Their next console and handheld is going to be based on its architecture after all, so any investment into the Wii U is also an investment into the future of its successors (not to mention there's the bonus of asset reuse, backwards compatibility up the wazoo etc - Why do you think that they're investing so much more into the Wii U VC instead of the 3DS VC? )
  4. We have US numbers as well. IIRC it was at 1 Amiibo per copy of SSB Wii U last time they mentioned it (think it was over 2 million at the time, don't remember the exact amount). In France it's the same as well last time they mentioned it, 1 Amiibo for each copy of SSB Wii U. So yeah, Amiibos are doing well (well there's a reason why they're nearly impossible to find after all!)
  5. Goes to show what you know... Wii had a tie ratio of roughly 9:1. That's one of the highest tie ratios that any console has ever had (when only counting consoles whose life cycles have "finished" - it's the third highest that any console has ever had, second only to the PS2 and the GCN, which were both around 10:1, with the GCN narrowly edging out the PS2). So yes, contrary to popular internet belief, the Wii was actually quite the software selling beast! (not to mention that the tie ratio also doesn't count digital software sales either, which would obviously push it even higher). And don't bother discounting Wii Sports, because those other consoles' tie ratios also count bundled software too (and both the PS2 and GCN featured bundled software galore throughout their respective lifecycles, so it's a perfectly fair comparison). Ultimately it just goes to show how useless a metric that tie ratios are in the grand scheme of things though. Lower selling consoles always have higher tie ratios because sales are more concentrated on that smaller audience. There are other metrics that are far more useful than the tie ratio (such as total software sales, seasonality, genre patterns etc) but the internet populace is totally fixated on tie ratios because that's the metric that Microsoft kept flaunting because it made the 360 look good in its early days when the Wii was kicking it's arse (people are easily conditioned it seems )
  6. Actually they're not bad at all. The 3DS' attach rate is in line with the GBA and the GB/GBC (DS is an outlier). Handhelds typically have much lower attach rates than consoles. Also Wii U's attach rate is pretty good for this point in its lifecycle (and it's only going to rise from here - it'll probably end up eventually surpassing the Wii and possibly even the GCN) Oh and no, these attach rates only count retail titles (as well as digital versions of retail titles - so no VC/Wii Ware/eShop exclusives)
  7. Q3 2014 results... Overall, not a bad result at all! The reduction in cost of sales is enormously impressive! Wii U's hardware sales being flat this quarter will have come down to its disappointing Japanese sales, meaning that it was balanced by a significant YoY uptick in the US and EU. Pokemon ORAS has also done amazingly well! Fastest selling Pokemon remake by far! (even accounting for the near simultaneous WW release!) Smash Bros 3DS is already at over half of Brawl's LTD sales alone and combined it's already nipping at its heels
  8. Until you notice that they've designed it to be bollock hard and unfairly designed on purpose in order to encourage you to pay Anyway, I would hope that it won't ruin the game, but knowing Capcom? I'm not holding my breath...
  9. Yup! Always hilarious He does a good job of messing up my bedroom setup too when he plonks his stuff in there too :p Anyway, my living room setup is still incomplete mind you. I'm looking to completely replace my 360 with a Steambox esc PC that'll also double up as a Xbone/PS4 replacement and a HTPC. I can't replace the PS3 because it is my PS1 and PS2 player (virtually all of the PS2 games I actually care about have already been HD remastered, while the couple of stragglers just get played on my US PS2 that's in another room) and also my Bluray player (the fact that it works with the Harmony remote via Bluetooth is also a huge bonus as it means that I can stick it anywhere, without it needing to be in range of the IR blaster ) My US Wii is also my GCN player as well as my primary N64/TG16/Megadrive/Master System/NeoGeo/Arcade game device (the actual N64 is there just for the Rare games that will almost certainly never see a VC release - I really don't like how they messed around with the games when they were released on 360 so they don't exist to me! Plus they're taking forever with the Wii U N64 VC releases, so it turned out to be a good move in that respect too ). The US Wii is also good for the few games that were released in 50hz on Wii U (I'm looking at YOU Zelda ALTTP, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Kirby's Adventure and DKC2!) My UK Wii U already covers almost all of my NES and SNES games (it's pretty much just missing the Square Enix games from the Wii VC now, as well as a couple of holdouts like Zombies Ate My Neighbours that'll probably come in due course - well, except for the following SNES games I have on cart... Yoshi's Island, Starfox and Tetris & Dr Mario) as well as a large chunk of my GBA library (it'll get there I'm sure) as well as my Wii U library (duh!) and the one major holdout that gave me a reason to keep my 360 plugged in (Bayonetta 1). If the missing consoles from the Wii VC make their way over to the EU Wii U VC in 60hz form (that's something I simply won't budge on - 50hz means that it doesn't exist to me unless it's an EU/JPN exclusive anyway), I'll gladly upgrade them too. I'd love to be able to consolidate as much as possible onto the one machine! (not to mention all the awesome Wii U VC benefits too! ) The only consoles that aren't covered by my living room setup that I have are my Dreamcast and my Saturn and that's because there's no realistic way to hook them up, like with the N64, without massively degrading the picture quality - Composite is the best I can get out of an N64 anyway, so the picture isn't really noticeably degraded). So those consoles live in another room along with my other machines Sorry for clogging up this thread but I can't really help myself! (Plus it's relevant because it's a big part of why I really love the fact that they're finally releasing digital Wii games! I just hope that GCN joins it shortly! Then my setup will finally be completely disc free! )
  10. Your setup is exactly the same as mine, just replace the charging cable with a USB LAN adapter. And like you, I have a massive 10 way power strip behind my TV and an extension on top of that for good measure with another 2 power sockets free for future stuff... yeah, I have a LOT of things plugged in... It's a real spaghetti junction behind there! (But thankfully it's all invisible when you're actually looking at the telly - not a single visible wire, and that's the most important thing ) I'm really proud of my setup! (Think I posted pics before on here). All wireless controllers, so no visible wires going across the floor, with virtually every device all controlled by one Harmony Smart Touch remote! (I freaking LOVE that thing! ) I even have an N64 plugged in on the opposite end of my TV underneath my sofa! (the video cable is connected to a massive extension that travels around the skirting board of my living room - likewise I also have another audio cable travelling through the skirting board that connects directly to my surround sound Reciever, with a headphone adapter attached for hooking up portable devices like a 3DS to my Reciever (all without a single visible wire going around the room!) I love it! There's a massive amount of stuff hooked up, but it's all completely minimalist! (You'd never know that I have 5 consoles hooked up to my TV unless I showed you!) I also have all of my Wii U, PS3 and most of my retro games (via Virtual Console) in digital form, so no need to ever swap discs or leave cases visible (and my Wii collection will now be joining them shortly thanks to Nintendo finally making them available digitally! )
  11. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=980414 Oh fuck off Capcom! You've just lost a sale from me!
  12. That one I listed would need a Y Cable and whether or not the USB Hub would supply enough power depends on the hub itself. It might be enough or it might not be... Generally speaking, if your USB hub is self powered (I.e, plugged into a wall socket), it should provide enough power just fine. If not? Well, that depends on the hub itself I suppose, but I'd guess not.
  13. Yeah... USB HDDs are stupid cheap. You don't even need 2TB anyway, if you go for a 1TB drive (which is still really overkill!) or even 500GB (which is probably more than enough for most people still), it's even cheaper (you're talking about £30-£37 - there's a good quality Seagate one on Amazon currently going for £37)
  14. Yeah, I do like the group cross examination mechanic. I just hope that it's handled with much more subtlty than it was in Layton VS AA; it's way too obvious when you can press someone for information (I liked how some of them lead to dead ends, but it's just too basic and simple in it's current form - I want to see it work like in Apollo Justice, with each witness having different "tells" when someone else says something!) Actually, overall the difficulty is pretty low for the Layton puzzles as well. There aren't really many tough puzzles in the game in comparison to the main series... But it definitely feels like a Layton game first and an AA game second (which makes sense, since it was made primarily by Level 5...) Oh and I'm sure that they're already working on FE If's localisation right now (Treehouse are probably gonna be too busy working on Zelda Wii U and Xenoblade X to work on Fire Emblem If anyway).
  15. Suppose now's as good a time as ever to update on my doings so far this year... ... ... er... Well I have finally beaten Layton VS Ace Attorney at long last! You must have JavaScript enabled on your device to view Miiverse posts that have been embedded in a website. View post in Miiverse (be sure to read the Miiverse comments for detailed thoughts of mine) In short though, it's a good Layton game but not a really good Ace Attorney game; despite some nice ideas and an interesting setting. It's just too simple and basic really for the AA fans and I don't think it's a really satisfying story for them (Layton fans however will really dig it though!). It really feels like an introduction of the AA series to fans of the Layton series more than anything else. Still enjoyed it overall, but it could've been better... As for the rest so far... I've just been replaying some past games recently (beat DKCR from start to finish, including the KONG levels and the secret last one in a couple of days over last weekend. Those improved loading times from the digital Wii version are really great! ) and I recently beat the story mode of Mario Golf Advance Tour again! Before that though I was finishing up me replay of Golden Sun from late last year a couple of weeks ago or so. Now I've just started Layton & The Azran Legacy for the first time and I'm still playing through Fire Emblem GBA (I've been playing this one for a fair few months. I always play through FE games very very slowly) as well as Pokemon ORAS (I'm not really feeling it - It's better than RSE, but it's still a remake of Gen 3; which was my least favourite Pokemon mainline game for a reason...)
  16. IN!! Same as before, every odd Thursday. This'll be my year for sure! I'm really feeling it!
  17. I don't believe you can... You can backup your saves from USB to internal memory manually, but you can't have it save to the internal while using the USB as storage IIRC. I'd still recommend getting a USB HDD anyway. They're pretty cheap anyway and if you don't use it now, you'll probably end up using it eventually...
  18. Ahem! You're putting a lot of faith in me actually having time to trudge through that mess of a site and getting all my billions of un-claimed Stars activated... At the rate I'm going, I'll never get anything! :p
  19. You're wrong. Only NES and TG16 games could be played with just a Wiimote. Everything else required either a Classic Controller or a GCN controller because the Wiimote didn't have enough buttons (and the Wiimote/Nunchuck would've been a very awkward and unsatisfactory solution - hell the VC is WHY the Classic Controller was made in the first place!) So if they re-released Point Blank or Time Crisis, or a DDR game and you needed a PS Move or a Dance Mat to play because they originally required a light gun or a dance mat to play, you would say that's BS? Yeah... No. That kind of restriction is actually completely sensible. Yes it would be incredibly difficult because these are Wii games that are running in Wii mode. They would need to re-build the entire control scheme from scratch (all of the GCN controller code is completely non-existent in this version as the first two games were re-built on a modified version of Metroid Prime 3's engine), requiring them to go back into MPT's source code and essentially re-build the game all from scratch again - at that point, it's not a re-release - it's basically remaking the game all over again; hell they might as well go ahead and just make a HD remaster if they were to do that! (taking even more time away from Retro to work on something new). This is a basic re-release, with games left exactly as they were originally released without them having to mess around with any of the game's actual code. What you're asking for is well outside the scope of this Wii Download project.
  20. Because games released for the Wii VC didn't require a classic controller, or games like Guitar Hero didn't require a special bespoke controller, or certain retro games didn't require a light gun, or certain PS3 games didn't require PS Move, or certain 360 games required Kinect... It's nothing new. Some games just require separate accessories to work
  21. Oh GOD! The site is SOOOOOO SLOOOOOWWWW right now!! Can't wait to see the back of it for good!!
  22. Your loss then. The Wiimote and Chuck controls are far superior to the original GCN controls anyway! That being said, I'd still like to see them re-release the original GCN versions eventually though (either as a basic unchanged download, like with the Wii games here, or as a proper emulated VC game), just for preservation's sake.
  23. Well... a game can sell well and still be underrated... I'm really talking about its reception here. Whenever people talk about their favourite Metroidvania Castlevania games, rarely do you ever really hear anyone mention COTM as being up there as one of the better ones and that's just not fair! Yeah the graphics might be simple (even for a GBA launch title), yeah it might lack the fluidity of IGA's games (it was made by the team who did the N64 titles, rather than IGA's team who made all of the later GBA CV games) and yeah it might lack the interesting gimmicks and weapon variety that the other Metroidvanias had (the DDS system is pretty imbalanced and too luck based really) but the core level design is solid and it has a unique feel that seems to meld the SOTN style of gameplay with classic Castlevania physics and game "feel". It stands alone amongst the other Metroidvania games and I don't feel that it gets the dues that it deserves! Personally, I'd rate it as my 4th favourite of the Metroidvania games in the series, after Dawn of Sorrow (1st), Aria of Sorrow (2nd] and Order of Ecclesia (3rd).
  24. Windows only sadly.
  25. Yup, it's true You can set up a New3DS as a network drive on a Windows PC and just drag and drop the files over WiFi from your PC! There are no limitations put in place whatsoever (so you can drag/drop any file). Just activate the network drive mode in the System Settings menu (it won't let you do it outside of the System Settings menu, obviously, to stop idiots from deleting files while a game is running!) on your New3DS and it'll appear as a drive on your PC, ready for you to drag/drop files wirelessly! Nintendo put the option in because they knew that getting to the SD Card on the New3DS was a complete PITA
