I like both, they are two different characters to me. Regarding Pokemon Trainer, I think the same as @Cube, especially since Charizard is a standalone fighter now. Although there's still a very slight chance he'll return, but now with Mewtwo, Jigglypuff and Pichu as his Pokemon :P

Will never happen, but my E3 dream conference would be: Hi fans, we're Nintendo and every year you expect us to make Mario, Zelda, DK and Kirby games. But this year we decided to dedicate to our lesser known franchises: F-Zero Waverace 1080 Pilotwings Game & Watch Golden Sun Starfox Mother Devil World Ice Climber Doshin the Giant Geist Advance Wars Kid Icarus Wrecking Crew Wild Gunman/Bayou Billy/Gumshoe/Hogan's Alley/Duckhunt (supporting Gamepad gyroscope) Excite (whatever) and 5 totally new franchises that will blow your brains out!!! And we want to tell you that Zelda will be out by Christmas. Next years E3 we will show you our progress on Metroid! :zzz:

Doshin the Giant! : peace: Nah, seriously, I'm not sure if there will be more new characters at all. 3rd Party Namco character could be, but who? Pacman or Klonoa maybe? First Party-wise, they're becoming dried up on "legendary" characters imo. In their "smaller" and more recent franchises there are plenty to choose from, but are these characters recognisable enough for the target audience? Kid Icarus, Wonderful 101, Advance Wars, 1080, Excite, F-Zero, Pilotwings etc, what could they bring??

A moody dark atmopshere and some Miyazaki-like creepy/weird/funny designs would be the best. And especially a twist from the story and standard "go to place X, find Y item, enter dungeon Z and kill the boss" routine. I'll buy it anyway, but these things would appeal alot to me!

I think they know that really well, but wish to focus on games they want to make and match their values and the red/blue ocean strategy. They don't want to compete with MS/Sony on their rivals strong points. They'd rather focus on a part of the gaming landscape that is less crowded. The issues lies with us fans and is: do we still like the games they make for that market? If not, there's always the other consoles/handhelds/PC/occulus rift/mobile games/ouya. To each his own

The whole "will characters be cut" sentiment is based on some quotes from Sakurai himself about balancing the roster more than before and that it would be difficult for some characters to have a unique moveset and still remain balanced. I thought I'd read that somewhere here? Afaik he was referencing to veteran fighters but also in reply to the constant questions about including new characters. And we've seen 4 new characters up until now (Megaman, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager and Rosalina & Luma) so I'm beginning to doubt if we'll see all Brawl characters return. Especially "clones"... That said, it is just my gut feeling, and I'm already searching for that quote to be sure I haven't misread it... ps: I would really be sad if Game & Watch, Ganondorf, Lucas, R.O.B. and/or Wario aren't getting in.
