I think Reggie said after last years that they will at the next E3, but don't quote me on it. Plans change, anyway. I think it's certain that they will, though.
-
Like creating the culture of expectation for the software to be shifted onto that platform.
-
I don't think so. Doing so would set a dangerous precedent which could snowball on them pretty fast.
-
It's not that Nintendo is struggling to adapt to the Wii U's capabilities and get the most of it, it's that they underestimated the amount of time and manpower they needed.
-
I argue that the GamePad enhances gameplay in its simplest use, too. Sure it doesn't make it amazingly new and awesome, but I struggle to go back to "standard" controllers these days, due to the ease of access to things like maps/inventory. Exactly, and that actually furthers the point I made about a new CEO.

And yet Iwata is being blamed for all the woes of Nintendo. Fascinating how these things work
-
Only the Wii U is screwed anyway. As I listed earlier, Nintendo's financial woes this year come from the fact they have expanded and obviously the impact of those expansions have yet to come. $135m extra in R&D, beyond the budget. Extra staff, think I read they hired around 1,000 new people last year, though I can't remember where. They have definitely been hiring in Japan, however. New R&D building. All these add up. I mean hell, Sony selling one building added $685million to their operating income last year, which made them no longer look like they were about to go bankrupt. It goes to show what an impact just one single thing can do. Agreed. For Nintendo polish, they have to focus on one platform. Working on both would cause disparity in performance, and so they'd have to go to one. They'd go to Sony. Of course, that won't happen. Should the worst happen, and Iwata gets removed and replaced, much like with Square Enix, the new CEO will want to go to "where the money" is to please investors and that's smartphones, not dedicated games devices.
-
I don't see that as happening. Even though the PS4 is doing well, Sony as a company is circling the drain. A merger should be the furthest thing from their minds at the moment.
-
If they severely screw up, I'd be there with pitchforks like everyone else. However, this situation isn't as bad as the media and people here project. I mean hell, more than half of their projected loss is money they shifted into R&D beyond the R&D budget. Plus the expansion in building and staff. These things won't show results for at least a year, and so in that year they will look like significant loss. If it wasn't for their expansion last year, Nintendo's financials would look a lot better, and possibly even bordering a profit, despite the Wii U's woes. In 2013, Nintendo changed. Their management changed. They increased their workforce considerably and even have a new building. We won't see the results of these things until the latter half of this year. It's also worth noting that whatever Iwata announces on the 30th isn't "rushed in the past two weeks" as people will undoubtedly say, but has been in the works for months.

This is what happens when Nintendo Japan lets NOE and NOA have more autonomy :p I mean hell, Japan has Secret of Mana
-
They specifically said that it isn't the case. Rather, what they're doing with their next hardware is having them work with a similar architecture, but different specs, so that assets can be shared easily, games can be ported easily, connect easily etc.
-
They are Iwata said as much. When he was talking about a new business structure, he was specifically mentioning about the having to pay 4800 yen after spending 20,000 yen on a system. Thinking we'll see discounted prices, subscription style things and so forth.

Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels on Thursday
-
That isn't what I said. I said the reason their games are so polished is because they know the console in and out. If they were to go multiplatform, it would damage this somewhat. Working on two different consoles would cause disparity in their output. Ever notice that multiformat games run better on one console than another? This would happen and it'd kill things. If they went to just work for one console, it'd be damaging also, due to lack of income.
-
They would be a shell of their former selves. That's worse than death.
-
I would rather they die than go third party. [/hyperbole] Seriously though, them going third party is a horrible idea. Part of the reason their games are so polished, with a locked 60fps, so tight and responsive is because they were developed in tandem with the console, with the developers knowing everything about the ins and outs of it. Them going third party would kill that. At best, their games would have to be exclusive to one console so that the sort of polish we expect could be achieved, and for a third party, that would be suicide. In addition to that, they'd have to significantly downsize. We'd stop getting niche titles like Kid Icarus, Pushmo, Rolling Western, and even Metroid and have to deal with annualised versions of Mario and Pokémon, with the occassional Zelda. It would be horrific.

You can't fly high without falling a couple of times. He is right. In this industry, risks have to be taken. Do they always work? Clearly not, but that doesn't mean they should get rid of the person, just because it failed.
-
I'm not 100% certain, but I think so.

At first, the 3DS hurt the Wii U, but I don't think it has prevented them having the ability to create a decent lineup for both. Let's look at the last year 3DS Fire Emblem: Awakening Brain Age: Concentration Training Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Animal Crossing: New Leaf Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Pokémon X and Y The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Mario Party: Island Tour Tomodachi Collection: New Life Tokyo Crash Mobs HarmoKnight Kersploosh! Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder Wii U New Super Luigi U Game & Wario Pikmin 3 The Wonderful 101 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Wii Party U Wii Fit U Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games Super Mario 3D World Art Academy: SketchPad Pokemon Rumble U Wii Sports Club - Tennis Wii Sports Club - Bowling Wii Sports Club - Golf NES Remix Dr. Luigi Decent lineups on both. Wii U's could be a little bit better, but that's common first year issues.
-
Perhaps, but as I'm saying, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be doing it now nor does it mean that it isn't a big part of their reported loss.
-
I know what temporary means. I'm saying that them doing that would set the precedent so that if they were to release new hardware, nobody would go to it because they'll expect their games to come to other platforms
-
So, because they should have done it before means that they shouldn't do it now? I never get complaints like that. Hindsight is 20/20. Should they have? Probably, but that doesn't mean people should act like them doing it now is a bad thing. Microsoft does have those divisions, yeah, Sony does not. Sony are in a very, very bad place. I too am a little sceptical, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt this one time.

As Reggie said "Play.The.Games", and I intend to
-
Based on comments from Iwata the past two days, they have had the kick up the arse that was necessary. With that, and their expansion, I think a new golden age may be afoot. Ever the optimist
-
And they're being proactive. A large part of their losses comes from them being proactive. Massive new R&D building Massive increase to R&D budget Massive influx of new hires Massive increase to marketing budget. Giving western studios more things to do, more control over Nintendo properties Things are going to change. Nintendo are being completely proactive about this now. Hell, Iwata even just admitted that they should have focused more on foreign trends. By the end of this generation, Wii U will have made a decent profit overall. Nintendo will be bigger both physically and in mindset. The Wii U won't reach massive levels of sales, but it'll be comfortable. I still say my relaunch idea is good, plus they can just sort their lives out with the Virtual Console, blow their load, release a $5 a month subscription to VC game playing. Job done.
