AMD actually has a very good upgrade route, their upcoming Deneb (Phenom II, Socket AM3) will work in with the AM2 Socket. AM2 will not however work in AM3. This is a pretty nice backwards compatible strategy really. Plus, Deneb runs like high C2D and Core i7, but there aren't really any real world results yet. Point is, if you have an AM2/AM2+ board you have a viable upgrade without dropping 300 on a new board. Oh and the Phenom II's can apparently hit 4Ghz on Air cooling and reportedly can go much further (beyond 6) with Liquid Nitrogen.

If he goes with an AMD dual-core he'll save a fair bit over the E8400, not so much over the Motherboard but a little. The only real bad thing is that your not going to get much of an overclock on an AMD. Performance differences are mostly negligible.

Hmm, I got a more definant answer on the Mobo/45nm CPU thing. According to my other sources, it'll need the bios update, of course according to asrock themselves it seems it'll be fine..... We'll just wait see. Even if it happens to need the update I think there are a few different things to make updating possible.
