LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (5th April 2022)
Julius replied to Julius's topic in Other Consoles
Man, those are some great scores. I'm very excited for it! I think I'll be holding off and wait until Celebration/the long Bank Holiday weekend, kind of craving something else at the moment and spent a fair bit on games recently, so I need to be a sensible adult and wait...right? Take it you're planning on picking it up at launch @Ronnie? If so, have you decided which trilogy to start with yet? -
Turns out you can still get 12 months of PS Now through the PS Store (browser, not app) for it's RRP of £49.99 and stack it to your heart's content, if anyone was looking for PS Now subscriptions with an eye on getting the PS+ Premium upgrade in June. This is half the price of the upcoming annual subscription for PS+ Premium (£99.99), though you'd technically only get 10 months of Premium rather than 12 if you signed up right now (as it immediately activates). Just need to log into the PS Store in your browser and then go to the below UK link, to stack you just need to buy one annual subscription and then open the link again to buy a second, etc. Don't think I'll be biting just yet as I want to see what's being offered first in terms of games, but figured I'd share EDIT: never mind, stacked 2 years. There's virtually no way that we're going to see PS+ Premium at half price in the next year and a half, and also gives me a chance to test the streaming for PS3 games. EDIT 2: tried out God of War HD for 20 minutes as I figured it'd be a decent test for a combat heavy game, and yeah, that's perfectly fine being streamed. Think these older games might have another issue I didn't think of before, which is how the triggers have changed over the years, as it feels super weird tapping R2 considering the trigger depth on the DualSense compared to when I do so on the DualShock 3.

The new anime and manga thread! [Use Spoiler Tags!]
Julius replied to Shorty's topic in General Chit Chat
Sigh Attack on Titan Final Season: Part 3 has been confirmed for 2023. It will be 8 episodes. I mean, at least it's not a film? I've loved parts of Part 2 (first half in particular, latter half has felt like a whole lot of set-up), but still, man, waiting another year and avoiding spoilers is going to be a pain -
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (Out Now!)
Julius replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Yeah, when I played through it when it came out on Switch (oh good lord that was nearly two years ago now?! Wait, it's already been two years since VII Remake?!?! ) I enjoyed the game a fair bit, think it just depends a bit too much on the trappings of JRPG tropes to a pretty absurd degree and ends up a bit bonkers at the end. Absolutely killer OST though. I know Future Connected is much shorter and serves as an epilogue of sorts, but because it's so short a burst for a JRPG, it almost makes it less appealing to me for some reason? Probably my own fault for leaving it so long though And yeah I'll need to check out The Last Story at some point for sure, I think @Glen-i might have mentioned it back when I was looking for Wii and Wii U recommendations back when I got a Wii U. I swear JRPG's are a solid 50% of the games I want to get to, but most of them are just so damn long -
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (Out Now!)
Julius replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Yeah, it's exactly looking over at my shelf which made me say "well I wanna buy it, but..." - I hate being an adult and having to make sensible decisions For me it's Xenoblade Chronicles (Future Connected or 2) or, much more likely, another Dragon Quest. Oh yeah you're right it did, totally forgot about that! Oh yeah that's totally fair, I can see where you're coming from. Think it's a combination of Square Enix just not making the messaging clear as clear as they probably should have and, like you said before, people just going a bit too far with it elsewhere. It would have sucked (I mean, especially over here), but yeah, at least we seem to have some clarity on it now Then I will cross my fingers for you and hope it does come over here that's actually something I'm surprised isn't confirmed over here to be honest. We've never had the game officially release over here before, and now that it is, it's only going to be as a digital title? Seems like the exact kind of scenario S-E could easily take advantage of with a limited run physical release of the game at an extortionate rate -
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (Out Now!)
Julius replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
But like I said before, I don't believe that that line was on the Square Enix and Nintendo sites before, and even if it was, it's a single bullet point which says "higher quality background music" -- that's about as nebulous as you can get when talking about a soundtrack for a remastered game, surely? The potential permutations of a one-liner like "higher quality background music" can be interpreted as being anything from a remaster of the original audio, to a fully rearranged soundtrack, to a re-orchestrated version of the soundtrack (for example, if the audio quality of the original wasn't up to snuff and they re-recorded the entire thing). And, again: the only real promotion of the game's OST is the video from before which just says "new tracks and new arrangements from Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition!" in the description (they specify these are new tracks and arrangements for the remaster specifically!) I also don't think you can blame anyone for thinking that we were getting a botched version of the game considering Square Enix's recent history with ports, remasters and remakes being all over the place. Chrono Trigger was a mess on PC at launch, and still is only available on PC and mobile currently; Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters have botched fonts and text sizes, not to mention that they're only available on PC and mobile currently (and don't get me started on the versions we had available before); Live-A-Live is getting a HD-2D remake; for some reason the platform with the most mainline Dragon Quest games right now is mobile; and Trials of Mana got a fully realised 3D remake (albeit with a AA budget at best). I have to agree with @Hero-of-Time, they've simply dropped the ball on being clear in the west about the state of the game and it's features (it shouldn't have been a question in the first place about the OST's state), as I feel like we've hardly seen any of it. I know it's a remaster, but it's a game which hasn't been re-released since, what, the PS3 in the US and Japan, and never came out over here in the first place? I feel like they really should be marketing this game more, especially the specifics surrounding it. As H-o-T said - and as we've even seen a few times over the last couple of weeks elsewhere in the industry - companies need to clear up their messaging and should be nailing it from the outset. I think I'm going to hold fire for now. I really want to, but I've got a couple of other JRPGs a bit higher up the priority list at the moment, and there's also part of me which wonders if there's going to be some niggling annoyance needing to be patched out in the game (such as with Final Fantasy IX's map music). Are you picking it up H-o-T? Just my two pence, but it might be worth just going for digital or importing the English language version from Asia from somewhere like Play-Asia if you do want a physical copy, as I don't think it'll be getting one unfortunately on the Switch specifically I don't think it'll get a physical cart over here in the west, as we've had a couple of remasters from Square Enix now which have only had English language physical editions available exclusively in Asia (Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy VII/VIII dual pack, Dragon Quest trilogy). -
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (Out Now!)
Julius replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Man, the messaging around the game's music has been absolutely atrocious. It's worth noting that it seems like the phrasing in the description for the game around the music has been updated, so I think we're all rightfully very confused Square Enix themselves released a video just over a week ago with new and newly arranged tracks for this specific version of the game (from the last page): There's no reason to think that these wouldn't be in the game, I think the video description itself is very easily interpreted as these new tracks and arrangements being in the game: Then there's what @Hero-of-Time posted the other day. And then there's this, which does make it sound like the soundtrack is the same - just cleaned up - and that the tracks in the above video aren't even included during the gameplay of the remaster: Further yet, someone on Resetera says that this is actually a bit loosely translated and is actually more detailed than the tweet would have you believe: So I guess I'm now cautiously optimistic that Square Enix have pretty amazingly messed up their messaging here and we are actually just getting the original OST remastered, with some extra stuff to listen to outside of the game or something, but it's amazing that this confusion has even come about in the first place. All they had to say was "this game comes with a remastered soundtrack based on the recordings for the original game and..." - I imagine somewhere in the game, maybe from the menu with a music collection or something along those lines? - "...there are a number of new songs and arrangements we've included for fans to listen to separately to this. Please be excited." Swear some of these companies are playing on hard mode -
Yeah, potentially, that's what I was getting at with wanting to premiere it at it Celebration - they could absolutely have a panel leading into it (or following) with the cast and show everyone there the first two episodes a day early. They've done stuff like that before, and hey I'm all for it if it means a better time for those attending SWC, it's just the lack of justification in their press statement which catches me off guard? It's just very un-Disney to move things around on Disney+ a few weeks after a trailer and poster with the date plastered all over it and not have thought about that already, especially on 31st March (the last day of the FY), because it's pretty middling news. Could just have been a case of needing to confirm their attendance I guess (COVID and whatnot), because I imagine their potential appearances at SWC would be baked into their contracts (COVID permitting), but it's just...odd, for lack of a better word

Looks like we're a step closer to the official cancellation of E3 proper. Not too surprising given the dip in quality in recent years, big publishers bowing out to do their own thing, or ongoing questions around the ESA's handling of the event and whether it would even be returning in-person, but man, looks like we're in for another Wild West of game events this summer. And depending on how you feel about Geoff Keighley, you'll probably take this next bit of news one of two ways: Brutal. Still awaiting that official announcement from the ESA, but it looks like the curtain is finally falling on E3.

It's a very bizarre decision. I did wonder myself if it could be down to Celebration - maybe they could have a panel on the Thursday where they do the premiere? - but I have a really hard time struggling to think that that's the reasoning. At the end of the day, when it comes to Disney+, Disney have been pretty stone cold and calculated (they're moving it from the date of the 45th anniversary, so unless they've got some big plans for the day before SWC starts, I don't know what they're thinking), which is why I don't think SWC will be the reason (and if it is, I think that will show in its scheduling, so I guess we'll find out soon enough?). It honestly could be as simple as wanting to destroy some "first day of streaming" record or something along those lines - which I actually think Disney would care about - and I reckon they've got the numbers to back up that they get more views premiering a show on a Friday and across the weekend than they do on a Wednesday and across Thursday/Friday. Until we see the SWC schedule its hard to think of a reason otherwise, and it's very odd timing that this is announced the day following Moon Knight's premiere on a Wednesday. The news came absolutely out of the blue, so maybe it underwhelmed, but would they really be that reactionary and swap things around that quickly?

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (Out Now!)
Julius replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
First time the game's officially coming to Europe and it's with what some people think is a borked take on - from what I've heard - is still an awesome OST which, at best, probably just needed a little cleanup? Square Enix is Monkey's Paw: The Video Game Company at this point. Their decision making is absolutely astonishing for their back catalogue and how it's so inconsistently handled. They fixed Chrono Trigger on Steam after a while, so I guess I'll just wait to see how this all plays out -
Huge first week for the game in Japan:

Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere date pushed from May 25th to May 27th, which will now be a premiere double hitter:

This deal's getting worse all the time: NetEase are reportedly acquiring Quantic Dream. Hoo boy -- a Chinese company with a history of oversexualised characters acquiring a company with a history of racism and sexism? Seems like a cesspit designed by Sidious himself.

Recently acquired Firesprite look to be making a AAA horror game in Unreal Engine 5, according to some job listings on their website. Interesting. It's definitely a genre PlayStation themselves haven't tackled recently at a first party level, so hopefully we see some more weird games in genres they aren't currently tackling in the works, too.

Well that's much worse than just shelving it appreciate you taking the fall for me S.C.G! Yeah, that's probably the best way to do it, not buying into your own momentary excitement and just knowing what you're into. I've made a terrible habit of buying games that are just ending up on my shelf, and I recently put a pause on digital purchases with one eye on the Wii U and 3DS eShops closing, and the other on folders (I know Switch got Groups recently but it's just not the same if it's not front and centre on the home page, but then, I guess at least they got them!). Everything I pick up physically I intend to play (though with the delay of BOTW2 I think I might have chosen the wrong time to get Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, as I could now see them getting Switch remasters by the end of the year!), but my tastes generally lead me towards games which are pretty long (namely being RPG's) which is why I think I've "fallen behind", for lack of a better term. Going to try something different in April, but yeah, just knowing what you want to play based on your own tastes and mood is always the right way to go I feel It's absolutely insane to me that, for console gamers, this could be the first time they've been into games and had access to renown series like Metal Gear Solid (if it comes to the service, but it's probably the best example I've got!) on the current platforms. I had to go out of my way to pick up a PS3 to experience MGS to MGS4, and as much as I love them, the simple act of having them stuck on a generally slower and clunkier console can make it hard to just pick them up whenever (hence why I've taken so long getting around to playing Peace Walker). In the time since I played MGS, though, I've talked the series up to my friends to the point now that if the series does come to PS+ Premium, they're saying they're completely onboard to give it a try to at the very least try to understand what it's all about, which is exciting for me (more people to talk to about games I love is always a win) and could generally be a big boon for retro gaming and bringing fan favourites back into the conversation in a way they either never have, or at least haven't since the PS3 (so a decade+ ago?) if they were lucky enough to be included in a collection or as a PS1 Classic. Now, obviously, it depends on what the line-up actually is in the first place, and it's why I'm still a bit nervous about this whole thing and could just as easily skip it as I could pick it up. I think it'd be crazy if a game as essential to the conversation of the PS1 as Metal Gear Solid didn't make it to a service like this, but then, it wouldn't be the first time Konami and PlayStation have made odd decisions if it didn't end up on the service. The only thing giving me a slight glimmer of hope there was its inclusion on the PlayStation Classic, so fingers crossed!

New overview trailer: Less than a month until launch now!

Earthworm Jim 2 is coming to SNES Online today (and to save a separate post in the NES thread as they're in the same announcement, Dig-Dug II and Mappy-Land are coming to NES Online today):

He's also probably got one of the most naturally smug faces I've seen in a while, and who can forget this? Am I the only one who thinks he looks like he could be Gordon Ramsay's long lost older brother? Must be a Newcastle fan, because he's definitely a magpie It's just so frustratingly tone deaf. I mean, who would have thought that an industry growing in size year on year would have a massive potential audience looking to experience older games?

Officially official that the games leaked the other day are indeed this month's games: Hood - meh, I have no interest. SpongeBob - could be a fun game to play in the summer, has that vibe. Slay the Spire - seeing how addicted @drahkon is to it, I'll gladly skip until I've got the time to potentially become obsessed

Yeah, that's a great article summarising a lot of thoughts I know a few of us have shared in here. We should be elated that legacy titles are coming to these systems, but instead we're left questioning the what, how and why of it all – which isn't our jobs as consumers. This is why transparency is so important, and they're really missing the mark with that. I was banging on yesterday about how they should just answer all of our questions before we get a chance to ask them, but well, that unfortunately hasn't happened. I don't think anyone shared it yet, but something I spotted going around from Jim Ryan's interview with Famitsu about the PS+ changes kind of says it all to me. Now, look, it's been translated through DeepL, so could be missing the mark...but it doesn't sound at all like he's even tested this himself. I think that's the thing that irks me. It's fine being a business person before being a fan of gaming, but look back at when these companies have excelled and you'll notice a pattern of the people at the heads of these meeting tables being fans of games themselves. Iwata. Layden. Phil Spencer. There are plenty more, I know, and they have businesses to run and at the end of the day that's what they're paid to do, but it's so abundantly obvious when the person calling the shots isn't a fan of games (be that playing them, or developing them, or at the best of times both!) almost first and foremost, because they're not answering the questions that we would have. What you get from that is a cold and almost despondent touch to a company which lacks conviction and foresight, because they aren't just trying to develop great games or services anymore, they're almost exclusively looking at the bottom line. And that's a dangerous place to be when you are in an industry which thrives off of creativity. The only reason I think they've announced it now is that it's the end of the financial year tomorrow, it's the only reason that makes any real sense that I can think of. When I think of "old Sony", I think they either would have come out swinging yesterday (as we all know they should have), or smartly left the announcement until June, just after everyone's E3 and summer announcements, to steal the headlines. The weird part to me is that while I'm sure they'll have their own internal meetings discussing EoY financials, shareholder meetings reflecting on the previous financial year as a whole are typically saved for the end of April/start of May, so I do feel there was a good 4 or 5 week window that we're just now heading into that they could have also announced this in, building up to that meeting

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is coming to Switch (and Steam, PS4/PS5, XBO and Xbox Series X|S) on 27th April 2022. This was announced at The Game Awards...in 2018, right? Damn, it's been a while. Seems like it's delay from 2019 resulted in it getting hit hard by COVID.
