Bogbas Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 99% of OEM software is the same price as retail boxed software. Disk/Case costs virtually nothing. Only savings is in mass bulk buy. Really? Here there's almost a 200€ (~134£) difference between the boxed and OEM version of win xp pro. For home there's around 180€ (~120£) difference. And bear in mind that you shouldn't be able to even buy the OEM version itself. And the eula for OEM versions of vista says that you can not switch the os to another system. And this means you can't upgrade the system either. Unless you buy another license for vista. Nice little box, the OS is very graphically intensive.. where as Macs are functional but not over the top. eg. Expose.. it's 2D so it works fast, smooth and even on laptops. take Aeroglass.. it's 3D, it's incredibly intensive on the first wave of Vista PCs and offers no extra functionality. Well the aero looks awful if you compare it to the system requirements. Xgl on linux still looks better and runs on older hardware. And I've just read that I'll probably break the eula even if I buy a legitimate copy of vista http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/420/1 ffs I thought they messed up enough with their dx10 shit. I'll play on consoles from now on.
triforcemario Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Nice, i get this free from my mum's work .... Is there any chance you could get us all free copies from your Mum's workplace?
Oli1983uk Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 After looking at the prices think I will stick with Xp home till the Prices drop, you can pick up a OEM version of Xp home from Ebuyer.com for £56

Its now the same as XP, 1 active copy per license but infinite re-installs. The rest of the licensing stuff sucks though, i can tell i'll be phoning Microsoft up every 2 mins telling them that theyre Anti-Piracy software went off again and i need them to unlock my system (not that i have a lot of pirated software, i just doubt it will like virtual drives, ISO creators etc).

Yes they've updated the eula for the retail vista. The OEM version of vista can only be installed once. At the moment I can't think of any valid reason to get vista. Or how it's better than xp. There's an anti-piracy software in vista? Seriously this os is sounding worse by the minute...

I got confused with ESD versions of the software.

Caris Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Will it afect limewire and things like keygens for Photoshop? Or is it just copied CD's and such.
CompSci Posted November 11, 2006 Author Posted November 11, 2006 Windows Vista on MSDN on the 17th Nov 06
T-Bird Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I found websites now seem to be doing XP Home/XP Pro + Vista Upgrade Coupon as it is being released so soon. This will allow you to upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows Vista. http://www.genstar.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=4324 - XP Home http://www.genstar.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=4325 - XP Pro
Ten10 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 My uni was offering me this for free today, but because the machine I need a copy of windows on sucks, I went for xp pro. But when I'm ready I'll know where to go.
Oli1983uk Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Now I am looking at getting Xp Home for my PC and at the moment Ebuyer has an offer on where you get the upgrade coupon for vista, but what vista OS is worth getting?
Bogbas Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Now I am looking at getting Xp Home for my PC and at the moment Ebuyer has an offer on where you get the upgrade coupon for vista, but what vista OS is worth getting? erm... None? But if you really think that it's a good idea, I'd go for the ultimate. Every other versions have features ripped off. Though you might also want to consider the home premium. But I'd still stick to xp pro.
McPhee Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Now I am looking at getting Xp Home for my PC and at the moment Ebuyer has an offer on where you get the upgrade coupon for vista, but what vista OS is worth getting? Home Premium is the best one for most people to use, Ultimate is more loaded that XP Pro (so if you had Pro and didnt use its extra features you definately dont need Ultimate) I wouldnt recommend buying XP for the upgrade coupon though, you can only install Vista once with those (so if all goes wrong you have to fork out £200+ for a new copy)
mario114 Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 I'm ganna buy myself an AMD 64 dual core 3800+ proccer pc, in the januray sales, and get one with vista home premium. It's about time I upgraded my 1.2 ghz machine.
RoadKill Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Now I am looking at getting Xp Home for my PC and at the moment Ebuyer has an offer on where you get the upgrade coupon for vista, but what vista OS is worth getting? Check the features chart. http://www.winsupersite.com If you used XP Home before, then just go for Home Premium. Home Basic is too watered down. I'll be getting my grubby mitts on Ultimate some way or another ^_-
