Okay I apologise if this is impossible/stupid/pointless* (delete as appropriate), but I'm just interested:

What it the PC equivalent (i.e. graphics card, processor etc.) I would need to run the (best?!) games as they are on these systems:

GC

XBox

Wii

Xbox360

PS3

Just interested!!

Absolutely subjective question, it's near impossible to compare.. except for the XBOX.

As that is based directly on PC architecture.

People will argue.. but it's a pointless question really. Sorry I don't have an answer for you..

I don't think any of those need deleting. ;)

PS3 - HAL 9000 with a Super FX chip bolted on the side.

Xbox360 - DefCon Master Computer with a CD rewriter.

Wii - Kitt

XBox - Spectrum 48K with a Casio calculator sellotaped to the front.

GC - Packet of half-eaten crisps with assorted pinball machine parts chucked inside.

But seriously, er, I have no idea.

There are barely equivalents. PS3 is so complex that there's no real equivalent in PC hardware. Wii has no support for DirectX and has custom made game hardware, incomparable to the PC. The 360 might be comparable but it's unsure how powerful it really is, though an IBM PowerMac like that ^ one might do. The Cube has the same problem as the Wii, nothing similar to a PC.

The Xbox actually is a PC. It's an Intel Celeron (P3 version) 733 MHz with 64 MB DDR memory and a GeForce 3 graphics chip. You need more powerful stuff than that to get the same performance though.

PCs are also always updating, so eventually PC graphics will overtke that of the PS3

If you ask Crytek they'll tell you that the PC is already ahead of all consoles. Some interviewer did...

To know about what PC the easiest thing to do would be to compare game that came out on these platform as well as on PC.

However if the port is bad it will need powerful hardware (yes I'm looking at you Driv3r).

But to give you some kind of idea of the next-gen (or it it current gen already?) consoles.

Splinter Cell 4: Doube Agent needs the following PC hardware according to Ubisoft:

3 GHz CPU

1 GB RAM

128 MB Graphics Card with Shader 3.0 support

Aren't they past the 360/PS3 level already?

Actually the wii should come in at about the power of a 1st gen mac mini (the ~1ghz model) plus some architecture optimizations. 360 is like a 3 cpu (slightly reduced cpus) g5 tower and the cell is about a 1 (slightly reduced) g5 tower plus 7 small cpus with no real equvilant as they hare highly specialized.
