NGC reborn! - NGamer

There hasn't been a single readable issue since Wil Overton left and you all know it. The Super Play golden years died a long long time ago and it's painful to see the trainwreck that the magazine has become instead of letting it die a natural death.

Rubbish. The Magazine's always been good.

I notice a lot of people who feel this way about Sony on these boards, proudly proclaiming themselves to be "Sony hateboys", saying how they won't buy the Playstation 3 because they hate Sony, not for a sensible reason such as the price.

These people, quite frankly, are morons.

Hate is a strong word. I would say I dislike Sony. And yes, that is why I'm not buying a PS3 and I honestly cannot see why this makes me a moron.

I can think of several other companies I dislike:

Microsoft (unfair monopoly)

Tesco (faceless mega-corporation)

British Gas (price hikes above and beyond their competitors)

In the case of Sony, my main reason for disliking them is this:

1) Sony's success contributes to Nintendo's failure.

It's the same reason that we hated Argentina in '86. The same reason we dislike the new supermarket that threatens to put our corner shop out of business.

Is it rational? Possibly not. Is it human nature? Most definitely.

p.s. Other reasons I dislike Sony are:

2) the fact that they are essentially performing massive price hikes for their existing customer base.

3) Ken Kuturagi. That smug smile makes me want to punch him.

Sorry for going off topic.

Apologies if I read your argument wrong, but it was largely incomprehensible due to the your futile attempts to use big words and complex sentence structures in order to appear more intelligent than everyone else

Wow, time of the month? ;)

O.K.

I didn't think I used very complex vocabulary. What words do you have a problem with? unattainable?, progression?, multitude?, accursed?, propaganderous? (not a word I know, so sorry) I mean I'm sure most people can read and understand the get the general gist of it.

And secondly, I think it's incredibly stupid of you to think I wrote such words to try and "appear more intelligent than everyone else ".

One, what would the point in that be? I have nothing to prove, or nobody to better on these here forums.

And two, I mainly use such complex vocabulary as I am probably going on to do English for A-Level and I attend a grammar school, so articulating in a complex manner has practically been crowbarred into me.

I try and integrate more complex words into my daily life (credit to Google homepage word of the day) as it offers more preciseness of expression, and more primarly, better marks ;).

Do you really think when typing that post I was thinking

"Mwahaha, I will type with an advanced vocabulary so to make myself look more intelligent than the others :hmm:" Maybe be you have a inferiority complex? :p

I think it's rather ridiculous (sorry if this long word offends you, but) not that you criticise my point (fair enough) but that you belittle my views by patronising me and getting personal. That's not the right way to win an argument my friend, that’s the way to lose one. :)

"Perhaps when your grow up a bit more (you're 16 according to your profile), gain a social life and find other things to spend your time and money on, you will realise this."

I think that's a rather harsh judgement seeing as the are many fellow 16 year olds on here, who probably do not appreciate it when told to "grow up". I'm sure when you were 16 you didn't appreciate people telling you to "grow up" when you said something which conflicted another persons view.

But firstly on your above point. There is no way that you can know anything about me or whether or not I do have a social life or whether I spend my money only on videogames so I think it’d be wise that you refrain from judging people before you know the truth, a lil tip for life there. If you must know, I do have an active social life, and I certainly do not spend all my money on videogames. I have only bought one videogame in the last two months, and that was Brain Training.

If you have the time and the money to waste on buying three consoles and a shedload of games, then that's fair enough, but a lot of people, myself included, do not.

I, firstly, have a DS, a GC, and a PS2. That's all, probably the same as the majority of people here, as, as I'm sure you are aware, 3rd party support for the GC has waned incredibly, and the PS2 offers these third party games.

I have no fancy deluxe Xbox360 nor do I have a PSP. Furthermore, nor do I have (how did you so eloquently put it, ah yes) a "shedload" of games for them. I have 15 gamecube games, and I bought the console a year and a half after launch. That's 16 games, in around 4 years. This equates to a game every 3 months. Hardly a "shedload" is it : /

Anywho, after disputing your fabricated claims, back to the original point that you could've simply made without making those above ignorant attacking claims.

"I enjoy a wide variety of games, but Nintendo games such as Mario and Zelda are my favourites, so I own only Nintendo consoles, and a large proportion of my videogame spending is on first party titles. I buy single format magazines as they keep me best informed. I'm sorry, but this does not make me a fanboy, and certainly not a moron."

I too enjoy Nintendo games the most, and also, the majority of my money mainly goes to first party games. However, I find, in my oh so humble opinion, that single format magazines generally don't offer anything different to what you can already get on ole t'Internet. I believe that this here site is superior to many single format magazines as they provide insightful articles, like the recent ones about games journalism, and a news feed that's always being updated by Tphi and co. And it’s free! I mainly made my bold statement, that you those people are morons, because all the content in these magazines are right under your nose! And for free!

Single format nowadays, I feel, regurgitate (sorry if this is too complex for ya, by using this word I have no intention) news that can be found on any number of Nintendo fan sites.

The magazines also try and cater to a certain demographic, if you don't believe me go pick up a PS2 single format magazine, and as a result, the writing style is titled in an unwanted direction (of course you may like this style of writing, this issue is just a matter of taste, and of course, business sense for the magazine.) But my other point principle point is that these magazines are often blinded by their single-format status, just look at ONM's inflated 96% score for NSMB this month.

The previews section is again, material that can easily be found online. This point is majoritively my major issue with single format magazines, in that they add nothing new to the mixture, instead serving up articles that have already been archived by Internet sites before they reach your hands.

However, that said, I did buy NGC until its dying days. While the previews weren't very informative, the news was old, and the reviews weren't of the highest calibre, one of the main reasons why I continued to buy NGC was that it filled a niche, that no magazine nor internet site has really done. Report in a humorous way that can actually make people laugh. This cannot be found elsewhere and hence the reason why I continued to buy the magazines. A feature that I remember fondly was "Nintendo's Freaks". It's oddly great obscure unattainable-on-the-internet features like this, that kept the magazine alive.

Just out of interest, what magazine do you buy?

ONM I presume. The aforementioned gripes about single format magazines were generally gained from reading of the last 5 issues of ONM. Please feel free, in fact in would encourage you, to reply with your view on ONM.

1000 word disgruntled rant over.

I like the way you claim you're not trying to demonstrate your superior intellect, but then go on to tell us about how impressive your academic background is. So you're thinking of doing English A Level? Good for you, however I should perhaps remind you at this point that I have already completed said qualification, gaining an A grade, and getting full marks on both my A2 exams before going on to study at university. Clearly, I have no problem with 'big words', I just think that your use of them was largely unnecessary, and at times incorrect. You even made words up, for goodness sake, and the grammar was all over the place at times. But not to worry, I'm sure you will go far in life with such an elitist attitude.

I should just point out that I do not read ONM. I detest it as much as you. I read N64/NGC/NGamer, and occasionally EDGE.

I don't mind saying that I HATE Sony. It has nothing to do with being a Nintendo fan, just because they make stupid and idiotic decisions.

I was never a big playstation fan, but I never hated them. But saying PS3 is a computer and not a games console, because consoles are for kids is horrible. Oh and trying to force everyone to buy their freaking stupid formats. And charging ridiculous prices (not just PS3) for hardware that will most likely break 50 times (Disc Read Error says hi) or that can be found in other companies products at much cheaper prices. What about saying they invented 3D, or saying that PS3 will have 4D? Copying Wii's controller? After saying it's gimmicky? And those card with the eye toy. Trying to destroy 2D gaming also breaks my heart. Sony is indeed getting worse and worse as a company, they make all the wrong decisions.

Now, I have all 3 (4) current gen consoles, because I could afford them 2nd hand, but not everyone can buy 3 consoles, so they must make a choice on what interests them the most.

About NGC, while it's funny, they have some very stupid points and reviews every issue.

Wow... posts am fun.

Anyway this came through the post this morning.

BIG NEWS FROM THE NGC TEAM

As a subscriber to NGC, you're probably aware that issue 120 was our final one. Yes, after nine long years, the UK's best-loved Nintendo magazine has booked its place on a round-the-world cruise, and will be searching for a nice retirement home by the sea.

But there's no rest for the NGC team. Just when we were preparing to spend the rest of our days sitting on a park bench, staring vacantly into the middle distance, we were rounded up, locked in a room filled floor-to-ceiling with games, and told not to come out until we'd created the newest, bestest* Nintendo magazine one the planet.

Which is what we're doing right now. It's called NGAMER (the name's still top secret) and we reckon it's shaping up to be the best thing we've ever done. We've plundered the greatest writers and artists from revered magazines of yore - Super Play! N64! NGC! - to form a team that'll be bringing you the most informed, intelligent, exciting and downright funny Nintendo coverage you've ever clapped you're eyes on.

As you read this, we're squeezing every last drop of gaming knowledge-juice from our brains, and packing our debut issue with a quite ludicrous amount of fun. From NES to Gamecube, Game Boy to DS and the mighty Wii, if it's on Nintendo, it's in NGAMER.

Best of all, we'd like to transfer your subscription over to the new magazine because, franky, we think you're going to love it.

If all this sounds fine to you then just sit tight and wait for mid-July, when issue 1 of NGAMER will be tumbling onto your doormat. There's no extra cost, you don't have to sign anything, and you'll get it first, before it hits the newsstands.

See you in July!

*Not an actual word. You're going to see "knowledg-juice" in a couple of paragraph's time - we made that one up, too.

NB Where it says ngamer, the word is literally blacked out in the letter.

Anyway NGC sure don't take things seriously:D! Good news about the subscriptions.

Got that letter today great news especially the "We've plundered the greatest writers and artists from revered magazines of yore - Super Play! N64! NGC! - to form a team" part as I think this means they're bringing back past staff which should help improve it.

Edit- is knowledge-juice like man juice because if it is I think it could have bad effect on sales

You even made words up, for goodness sake, and the grammar was all over the place at times. But not to worry, I'm sure you will go far in life with such an elitist attitude.

And so the debate continues...

Haha, maybe so. I stated my academic background as justification, not in an attempt to boast. Like how one might say, excuse the bad example, I go to chess club a lot so I'm good at chess.

I admit, perhaps I am somewhat elitist, but to that I say, "meh". We all have faults within ourselves, and I’m sure that everyone in the world has a little niggley subject in which sturss an element of elitism deep within even the most modest souls.

And make note, as the issue raised (I forget what it was now, something about single-format magazines), is just something which niggles away at me and perhaps bring about some airs and graces within me.

The "I'm sure you will go far in life with such an elitist attitude." is rather misplaced. I assume from my text you have wrongly presumed that I seem to have these airs and graces constantly through my day-to-day life and that I'm one of those "uber-clever and thus uber-arrogant" chaps. Well, I'm afraid to say, despite your perceptions I am not.

Far from it my friend, I know those types of people and they too get on my tits/wick end, I just do not hope that you have perceived me to be "one of them".

A example being today, before my big Biology exam, I hear one person stating how "exams are so fun and sooo easy, and how they better be harder than the last one as that was so boring, I finished it within two seconds and it was a piece of piss etc etc"

I, will probably not go too far in life. I am just an average B student fellow, except in I.T, Drama, and History, my specialist subjects which I'm sure everyone has some of. Note not English, but, as you brought up, I am considering continuing studying it as I enjoy it nonetheless despite my shortcomings. As you stated my grammar ain't so hot, I use far too many commas. A habit I gained from an early age when I realised what they were.

Anywho (I know it's not a word, but I feel it should be. If it isn't and you try and criticise me on it, which you have done previously, take it that I am using Neologism)

It was a mighty fine time discussing such issues with you, I feel it was far more stimulating for the brain than Brain Training, despite hurtling extremely far off topic. I hope we can put our differences beside each other and I profoundly apologise for upsetting you or others in any shape or form.

However, remember they are just mere opinions. I wish we could settle our differences, perhaps over something like a nice ole game of Mario Kart?

In an interesting twist back on topic. Do you not find that Edge has very much the same flaws as the ones you proclaim I have. I specifically think that too often they use a word in which a far simpler one would suffice. I also find, to coin a phrase frequently used throughout this post, that Edge constantly give themselves airs and graces, and demonstrate a severe case of arrogannce. However, despite these minor irratations, it is still generally a good read.

Laguna, you claim not to be 'uber-arrogant', but believe me that is exactly what you're coming across as. Perhaps you should put your supposed language skills into use by learning how to not write like a stuck-up arrogant fuckwit (a little piece of 'neologism' for you there, see?)?

Hmm, I was talking to my friend about this just now, and your are probably right, my friends words being "the thing that strikes me about you greg is how in real life i feel i could speak to you very normally, heaven forbid even win an arguement! but with a computer infront of you you become some kind of mad dictator"

He's right and has "been leniant with me". I guess behind an invisible wall people have can have no control and egos become inflated and such as there is nobody there to reign them in. Looking back, I agree, the way I wrote was pretty pompous to say the least, and thanks for putting me back in place. I thank thee kindly (Resi 4) for your words, and I'm sure they will benefit me, no doubt. I didn't realise what a jackass I'd been.

But, as I said, I will learn from this and such. I wish for these differences we've had to be put under the bright (or whatever the saying is). I apoligise.

Now I'm expecting a damn good TP and SSBB poster from them sometime.Gifts sound much better than other magazines :)

"posters, books and other exclusive items".

Not liking the sounds of books, the NGC ones were rubbish, well the walkthrough ones. If people need guides they'll go to GameFAQs.

And hopefully the posters will be nice big ones, not small middle of the magazine ones.

Is it going to be staples? Surely not.

God this post got bitchy and very quicky, about peoples command of the English language etc... and what people come across as. It's amazing how text can be read as one thing but meant as another, so what is arrogant to one person is something to another. anyway thats not why I posted here (I'm doing an English degree by the way, just to put my two cents in)

Back on topic to the new Ngamer magazine, I'll buy the first issue see what it's like, doubt I'll buy it every week, the internet is full of stuff spending tons of money of magazines just isn't for me anymore, the days when I used to buy Games TM, Edge, Cube and NGC all in the same month are gone, but i'll give it a go. NGC was never as good as N64 Magazine was, and who can forget when they made the magazine super big (bigger than A4) and wrote on the cover it was the "Biggest Gamecube magazine".
