Home office "accidentally" frees over 1000 convicted criminals

Recommended Posts

You just can't make this kind of crap up. From http://www.bbc.com/news

The home secretary says he "regrets" that 1,023 foreign prisoners have been allowed to walk free when they were meant to be considered for deportation.

They include three murderers and nine rapists, Home Office figures show.

Charles Clarke said he could not say "hand on heart" that they would all be tracked down but said he did not think it was a "resigning matter".

The Lib Dems accused ministers of incompetence. The Tories are demanding Mr Clarke answer to Parliament.

Conservative shadow home secretary David Davis accused Mr Clarke of trying to "smuggle out" the news rather than face MPs' questions.

"At the end of the day it's not good enough to blame officials, frankly it is a issue which affects the safety of the British public," argued Mr Davis.

How any supposedly organised department manages to accidentally free more then 1000 convicted criminals is well beyond my understanding. Well done Mr Charles Clarke - your incompetence and the incompetence of your department has finally tipped this nation over the brink and into total idiocy and farce.

Charles Clarke is safe, don't go dissing him because he cocked up once. I am sick of this sensationalist attitude to politics where it's just simplified down to an extent where people just don't consider the event.. they just consume it.

I think there is a difference between being 'considered' for deportation and being deported. Obviously those convicted rapists should be out of the country immediately.. and there probably was an attempt to smuggle this under the carpet.

We have a socialist (well kinda) government and I think anyone who starts citing racial hatred along the lines of 'frickking immigrants' is not considering the real issues. So should think before he/she adds to this thread.

TBH, Clarke really needs to explain himself better on this, mistakes like this happen for a reason.. someone should be held accountable for this.

When you hear 'One thousand foregin rapists and murderers set free by accident!' on the BBC, it makes it sound like they did it all at once. Like the gaolers all one day thought they'd just give them all a break.

When you think they were all most likely released over a period of a few years, it doesn't sound as bad.

Furthermore, when you read that only three were murderers and nine were rapists, you begin to feel slightly misled.

These summerise my arguements. Try running the governement yourself if you think you can do a better job.

If they hadn't let them loose by accident Cherie Blair would have made sure they got free somehow.

Losing 1023 people over seven years and only 107 have been found? That is a lot of people to lose. How can the home office defend that? Incidentally, as Home sectery, it Clarkes job to make sure this doesn't happen, or else is cleared up when it does. I've eaten gelatine deserts that could've done the job better.

Its not like they got a jail out of free card..

They served their sentances and were freed, the only difference between them and other inmates is that they are forgein.

It's not about being foreign - it's about incompetent government. Surely you must agree that you expect your own government to be organised then this. The Home Office doesn't even have records on what about 100 of them did. The fact that there are 5 pedophiles and 20 drug dealers not being monitored in any way alone would indicate severe incompetence on the part of the Home office.

Heres the thing about the government. They make 1000s of good choices. Noone notices. They make one mistake, and everyone is against them.

Now, 1023 in 6 years...thats 170.5 a year, and just over 14 a month. Now, it doesnt say anywhere that they didn't finish their sentence.

Basically, the whole news story says "14 foreign people a month are not considered to be thrown out of the country when they finish their prison sentence."

The media just makes it sound like "OMG! 1,023 Killers and Rapist were just freed in their first week in prison for no reason. WERE ALL GONNA DIE!!"

edit: Also, monitering people costs a lot of money. For a system where all these people are monitered, taxes would have to be a LOT higher.

Your missing the point. The fact that there are dozens of people that no-one can find, who under normal circumstances would be tagged and monitored, is almost (ALMOST) beside the point. What is so worrying is the fact that this is not one collosal mistake, but a continous and repeted act of negligence over several years. These people can't sort their own paperwork, but I'm expected to trust them with my civil liberties. It's farcical, and I expect much better from my government. Don't you?

At the weekend I was approached by a man who told me his name was Dave. Dave had a tag on his arm that was "a fucking useless nuisance". Dave wanted to get a quid or two off me so he could catch a train from here to god knows where so he could check in with his police monitoring people.

Tagging and monitoring can easily be undermined. Dave didn't even get released in Manchester, he was from somewhere else entirely. He was probably here so he could meet his dealer or something, but whatever.

Alls I'm a-sayin' is that tagging is a pretty pathetic way to stop people committing crimes and it sure wouldn't stop someone murdering if they wanted to. If all the unnaccounted-for had been tagged, the only the police would know would be where the person is meant to be. They're hardly going to hang around to get caught if they've just committed some crime or other.

Also, just because someone's been gaoled for a crime doesn't mean they're going to go out and immediately re-offend.
