fatnickc Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 First of all NoE's article : Nintendo UK and the Science Museum have announced they are to join forces in a sponsorship agreement worth £1 million. The four year partnership will benefit a portfolio of complimentary key Science Museum initiatives including: Game On: The world wide tour celebrating the history and culture of video games comes to the Science Museum in late 2006 thru into 2007. Nintendo will sponsor the exhibition, which charts the technological and cultural developments in computer games, from the 1960s video arcades to the very latest home consoles. Launch Pad: One of the Science Museum's flagship galleries, Launch Pad aims to inspire and educate younger audiences about science and technology, and will be expanded and relocated to the front of the Museum, due to open in 2007. This latest funding from Nintendo, following that of Principal Sponsor Shell, will help create a new state-of-the art interactive gallery, with an educational outreach programme and website, to help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Dana Centre Nintendo's sponsorship will provide valuable support in developing the on-going programme of innovative audience focused events at one of the UK's leading thought provoking and informal forums of debate. The partnership between the Science Museum and Nintendo highlights some important synergies the two organisations share. Both have a long and established heritage in their respective fields. They are also both highly respected the world over and most importantly are seen as leaders and innovators in what they do. Jon Tucker, Head of the Science Museum, said: "This is wonderful news for us and for science in the UK. We are delighted at Nintendo's commitment to the Science Museum. Nintendo's contribution will mean that we will be able to realise some of our ambitious plans for the future. Science has a vital role to play in shaping our society. The world needs many more new young scientists and engineers. At the Science Museum we are constantly striving to show that science is relevant, fun and crucial to the survival and well-being of the human race." David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK, said: "We're very pleased today to be able to announce that Nintendo are set to become long term partners and supporters of the work done here at the Science Museum not only to help them realise and achieve their long term goals but to help them inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers." The Science Museum, Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London, is open 10.00-18.00 daily. Admission to the Museum and Launch Pad gallery is free. In this morning's Metro newspaper, there was an article on this also. A scan is found here.. The article is as follows : For computer gamers who still have a soft spot for their old Commodore 64s, it is manna from heaven. A £1 million gaming temple filled with classic games from the 1970s and 1980s is to be created at the Science Museum in London. Funded by Nintendo, the exhibition is an A to Z of gaming from 1972 coin-operated classic Pong to the latest Grand Theft Auto game for the yet to be released Sony PlayStation 3. Fans will have misty eyes when they are reminded of hours spent saving the planet from an alien invasion (and bloodying thumbs) in 1978 classic Space Invaders, jumping over hundreds of barrels in 1981 favourite Donkey Kong and mastering a sonic boom in revolutionary 1991 beat 'em up Street Fighter II. And, of course, who can forget little Mario, whose platform adventures helped Nintendo to the top of the console heap in the 1980s. Once nostaligists tire of reminiscing about Pac-man and their ZX Spectrums, they can try out the latest hardware, software and gadgets. Nintendo [uK] general manager David Yarnton said: 'This exhibition means not only can we celebrate the great history of gaming, but also inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to get involved in what looks to be an exciting future.' The exhibition at the museum will open later in the year and continue until 2007, with an interactive gallery built to inspire aspiring programmers due to open in 2007 and run until 2009. By John Higginson Also featured beneath the article are 8 pictures of 8 gaming characters, whom you need to name. There are (often rather derogatory) comments on your performance. I really like the Science Museum and have been there many times in the past, it's very easy for me to get to and is free to get in. We might have to pay to see this gaming thingy as sometimes for the special exhibitions they do charge you but i dont mind, it's gonna be awesome! Oh and in the Metro i got all the characters except Max Payne....According to the them im gay or something.
Fields Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I didn't get Max Payne either. Seems a bit of a strange one to put in, hardly 'famous' is he? Anyway, this seems like a good move for everyone involved. I love the Science Museum, I'll definately be checking out the game-related stuff next time I'm down that way.
