Eenuh Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Ok, so we are planning to buy a tablet, not for us, but for Jim's Mum as she is mostly home alone with not much to do. She has no laptop and only an old phone, so we think she could do with a tablet so she can go on the internet and play some basic games. She used to play Brain Training on a DS, so those type of games might be good for her. Now we were wondering what tablet would be good to buy for her? It would preferably need a big screen so she can see things well on the screen. It needs to be easy to operate, especially as she has never had anything like this before. Never used a laptop for example. So the easier, the better (we will probably set it up for her beforehand, but we won't be around to help her with it all the time). So big screen, easy to work with, needs to have some decent app/game support (maybe Android based?), and of course not cost an arm and a leg as Jim and I don't have that much money floating around. =P What brands should we look at? I know of the Nexus 7 and 10, but not sure how easy they are to use for an older person. What else is on the market that is good and affordable?

Given the cost of the Nexus 10, you could just buy an iPad Air for that price. If you want to spend less than the £330 or so the iPad costs then you've got to scale back a bit. If they're not going to be doing anything particularly intensive then a Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 inch is about £100 cheaper than the Nexus 10/iPad (on Amazon). Although that's a bit outdated now, you'd probably be better off getting this 10 inch Nokia Lumia tablet for £250 off John Lewis instead. Worse screen but better processor than the Nexus 10 (which is a bit out of date now). The Windows RT OS also strikes me as the kind of thing very user friendly to the tablet novice, too.
Fierce_LiNk Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Cheers, brah. I'm tempted to go with the iPad 4 (not the air). Her eyesight is pretty shitty and she's not very tech-savvy. I imagine the interface is quite decent/easy to use for somebody who is a complete n00b at all of this?
Sheikah Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Yeah, iPads are pretty n00b friendly. Just not wallet friendly. :p
Shorty Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 On the opposite end of the scale to an iPad, I convinced my Mum to get a Hudl from Tesco's ebay outlet for £59 and she loves it.
nightwolf Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 My mum uses the Kindle Fire, so absolutely loves it. Plus its got the whole 'reading' business she loves as well. Not sure if that'd factor in?
Fierce_LiNk Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Cheers for the input, people. We went for the iPad 4 in the end. It got delivered a few days ago and we've given it to her today. She is absolutely delighted with it. To quote her own words, "it's the best thing that anyone has ever given me." D'awww.
