dabookerman Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 yes i have certain people coming round, and i would like to password protect certain folders on this pc, as i dont know who will or will not be snooping around this pc, is it possible? and dont tell me to zip it then password protect it, i know ho to do that
Jack Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I too would like to know an ideal way to hide all my porn. I've heard that NTFS has all sorts of neat ways to hide and lock folders.
Twozzok Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 if these people aren't overly technically minded, you could just hide the folder... and set it not to show hidden folders.
Jon Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 You can do it in windows XP professional and there are heaps of 3rd party apps you can download that can also do it.
The3rdChildren Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Most porn sites offer a password protection program for your folders, just search around a little.
Charlie Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 You can't do it easily on Fat32, Windows lets you lock the folder so no other users can get in but it doesn't work because of the way the drive is formatted. You can do it in NTFS but it's not worth converting to NTFS just for that. http://www.cypherix.com/password_protect.htm
reaper673 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Not really. The laptop I bougth a year ago was fat32 and the PC my brother just bought is as well. Each manufactuer has different preferences.
Sanchez Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Not to mention NTFS doesn't have 4GB file limits and 127GB partition limits.
AshMat Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 If you have different user names then password protect yours and set it so that your folders cant be accessed by other uses, that's what i did. Though if the other users have admistrative rights they can delete the password but if they arent technically minded they won't know that. I didn't at first, but my mum doesnt know how so im ok
Charlie Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Retro-lover, you can only do that on NTFS though.
AshMat Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 NTFS? If i knew what that was then erm.. So Winodws Xp NTFS or something??
Guest Stefkov Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 when i see NTFS i always think is says need for speed, but it has a T in, what does it mean?
Shino Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 As it says in the name is a file system, made by microsoft, to implement some unix notions in microsoft's OS as some have said in previous posts. A file system is the way data is organized in a storage device, it creates a logic structure for data access in a partition.
dabookerman Posted January 11, 2006 Author Posted January 11, 2006 im on laptop, putting password in will make people suspecious. plus, laptop uses fat32....soooo i just decided to hide the folder and unhide it whenever i need to
