That Argos/Amazon 179.99 Wii U deal didnt do much as Nintendoland didnt chart on the individual chart.

That Argos/Amazon 179.99 Wii U deal didnt do much as Nintendoland didnt chart on the individual chart.

Don't even get me started on that. The morning after I checked Argos's website and not a single bundle was available for sale anywhere in the country. They had every other bundle available, no problem. W@nkers. I bet they pulled the bundle from their listing. It's false advertising. How do you buy something that's not available? Luckily I guess, Amazon were price matching an imaginary sale.

Man, Nintendo really missed out by not getting Minecraft.

I was surprised by just how much its sold on PS3 as well. Despite already playing the PC version all the time with mods I'll still be getting the PS4 version when it comes out for ease of multiplayer.

As I've mentioned many times before, I've long held a strong disdain for Sony for a few reasons - but to be honest they really seem to be taking the best approach this gen. Seem to have learned from their mistakes and really done what needs to be done to have a successful console and get the market on board. Would anyone have seen this coming after how the PS3 launched? Doubtful imo!

(and on a side note I was always under the impression that contrary to what Serebii claims, Sony were heavily propped up by their gaming division at least during the PS2 era. I haven't a source to hand, but it was a well known fact at the time!)

Sony were indeed in big trouble some time ago, and yes the PS2 kept the ship afloat. It coincided with the ipod launch, prior to that Sony were the biggest players in the portable music player and almost overnight they had lost the market. Also, flat screen tv's caused them to lose a big share of the tv market as Samsung & LG in particular ate into their market share.

Just nicked this quote off Serebii on Gaf. Cheers. :D

Pokémon X & Y is at 11.61 million units in 2013 alone

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds sold over 2.18 million

Animal Crossing New Leaf did a further 3.52 million units

Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros sold 2.00 million units

Super Mario 3D World & The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD have both sold over 1 million but they didn't give exact figures

As I posted on GAF:

What I'm trying to work out are Nintendo's projections

Through Q3 FY3/2014, they are at a Net Profit of $98.6million (10.195bn¥), yet for the entire year, they're projecting a Net Loss of $240 million (25bn¥). Is this just due to the new shift in R&D budget (13bn¥) and Advertising (8bn¥)? Their Q4 seriously can't be that bad.

Only thing I can think of is the budget shift is in Q4, and the buyback of Yamauchi's shares.

What's interesting is their forecast for the remainder of the fiscal year. They need around 400k consoles sold before the end of March to reach that projection. Either they don't think Mario Kart will give the console a significant bump or the thing isn't going to reach us till at least April.

I always suspected April, to be honest. March is more Winter than Spring :p

Lets not get into a battle of the seasons again. I had enough of that pants last year.

So if it is April, then what the hell is in March?

Fun fact, Pokémon X & Y have outsold all games except GTA V and CoD Black Ops on the 360(and Kinect Adventures if you wish to count it) and all games except GTA V on the PS3

I know it's still early days, but how does it compare to previous Pokémon games?

Well I don't have the exact data for Gen IV and earlier but with Gen V:

X & Y: Two months & two weeks on sale in all regions - October 12th 2013 - December 31st 2013

11.61 million

Black & White: Just over six months on sale in Japan, just under one in the west - September 10th 2010 - March 31st 2011

11.51 million

Black & White: Just over nine months on sale in Japan, just under four in the west - September 10th 2010 - June 30th 2011

12.87 million

Forgetting about the Wii U for a moment ( just like the general public have :D) the 3DS could be on track to be Nintendos worst selling handheld. I mean if you look at what's already been released, Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Monster Hunter etc. what titles are going to drive the handheld to 80million+ sales? Where's that other 40 million gonna come from?

They still haven't released the 2DS is Japan yet, have they?

Indeed and it gets quite ignored when you read stuff ‘like best selling system of 2013’.

The 3DS is underperforming for a Nintendo handheld. Smartphones/Tablets are choking it and so many big hitters have already been released. Japan isn’t really the problem it’s the West. I don’t see how they sell another 40 mil to beat the GBA.

I'll admit, I didn't think it was doing that bad but when you look at the comparison figures it does show that the dedicated handheld market has shrunk. It's 5 years old this year and it's just reached the halfway point of the GBA sales. Yeah, not good at all when you look at it like that.

In the past, when a Nintendo console has been struggling, they have always had the handheld market to rake in the cash. If that is starting to get taken away from them, and their console struggles continue, then they are going to find themselves in a very sticky situation.

The thing is, the smartphone market is reaching saturation point rapidly.

Nintendo's handheld market has shrunk, nobody can deny that (though it's not as bad as people say). However, it's not going to go away. The 3DS proves that there is a market for it. Pokémon proves that there is a market for it. Pokémon on its own, on a console that has shifted 42 million units, has sold more than all but 3 games on the Xbox 360 and all but one game on the Playstation 3...consoles that have twice its install base. This clearly shows that there is a market for it. Nintendo just have to push it properly.

The 3DS is not 5 years old?!?!?

And yeah, mobile has obviously taken some of the market, I didn't think that was ever in question? But I think it's also clear there is still room for handheld devices.

Surprising still though how bad, comparatively, the 3DS is doing

Indeed. It's three years old next month.

3DS isn't doing bad. People just keep comparing it to the DS, which shot off like crazy when it tapped the then-untapped market of casuals, which now only play on their smartphones. Outside that, it's not that far behind the GBA

I do agree that there is a market for it but how big will that market remain?

My main issue is that IF Nintendo can't get their console strategy together, whether it be this gen or next, then they won't be able to support the costs of both platforms.

As I said, in the past it wasn't an issue if the console struggled, as they had a strangle hold on the handheld sector but now that isn't the case and it may get worse as the years go on.

You are getting a generation of kids growing up playing games on phones rather than a dedicated handheld machine. Coupled with the fact these phones offer "free" games then you are looking at a bleak future. Parents are quite happily handing over their old phones and tablets and these kids are getting their gaming fixes from them.

The 3DS is not 5 years old?!?!?

Yeah, apologies. Dunno where I got that from. Shoddy maths on my part. :D

It's 40 million off and they have blown all of their big franchises. Unless they have some new, wacky game that pushes the sales, I find it hard to see that it will even beat the GBA.

Still. 4 years is more than I thought... I thought it was 3!!

The year looks a decent one to be fair, but surely they'll be looking at releasing the next one in 2015 time?! Feels like it's just getting going though.

It's a very weird time for Nintendo. I'm really excited to see what they do.

How else can they push it in the west? They released a cheaper version in the 2DS, there is no Western support for handhelds and they are competing with tablets which parents can buy and load up with cheap games to give to the kids.

I dont think there is much else they can do other than reduce the price of software. Start doing real discounts on old games and get the new games RRP reduced.

Pokemon has done great but the attachment rate on the 3DS is low. Thats not good. Plus yoy sales are down even though its not even 4 years old yet.

If in March 2011 someone said the 3DS would possibly sell less than the GBA people would of laughed big time. DS numbers no but I thought the 3DS would easily pass the GBA.

I think Nintendo have to look at getting a new handheld out late 2015/early 2016 as the 3DS will only decline now.
