General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

I wonder how the Vita's price drop next week will affect things (apparently, a couple of retailers dropped the price early, but not all).

I think it's going to spike quite a bit. Amazon Japan only has the white model in stock at the moment, the rest are sold out. Copies of Phantasy Star Online 2 have also sold out, with a scheduled redelivery due for next week as well as more Vita units.

There's a few game stores within a 20 minute walk from my apartment, so I may go have a look later on just to get some idea about the demand. All of the stores I browsed in roughly 3 weeks ago all had a good amount in stock, one of them also had hardware stock in clear sight from the counter and had a couple dozen vita models.

I think 50k max next week for Vita.

Yeah, I can see that being the likely maximum.

For Feb 25 - Mar 3, the Vita will have had:

A Price drop

Phantasy Star Online 2 (Free to play download and special package edition)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus (Port)

A Senran Kagura title (Both 3DS games have sold over 100,000 copies)

Could be a very good week for the Vita

Looking like the thing is selling out in quite a few places, though I didn't end up checking around here because I got too lazy after I found a boxed copy of Pokemon Silver in Book Off for about £3.

Soul Sacrifice is the big game people are waiting for on the Vita, but there's quite a few games coming out between now and then. Quite a few are ports, but I can see some selling a bit.

On the 3DS front though, there's only 2 games due this month (it's now March here), and they are Super Robot Wars and Luigi's Mansion 2. The former usually shifts a couple hundred thousand units. I imagine the 3DS's momentum may slow down, but I wouldn't put money on Vita outselling it. If it does though, I'll be impressed and actually glad that it's showing signs of recovery, we could definitely do with some competition on the handheld front.

I never even knew that NPD counted returns, let alone put them against monthly sales! That makes a lot of sense. 57K is just such an absurdly low figure that I had a hard time believing it back when those last NPD figures were released (and it's not hard to believe that such a large number of scalpers might buy them enmass, in light of what happened with its predecessor).

100Kish is still a very poor result, don't get me wrong, but it's a damn sight more plausible than the meteoritic drop that those NPD figures suggested!

It bodes much better for February and March's sales in that case, at least in the US.

Yeah, providing it's true, which is feasible based on the software data, then all it means is that things aren't as glib as we previously feared for the upcoming months

If that's the case, then I expect to see February's NPD numbers sitting around 65-80K.

40,000 returned to store sounds a bit...extreme.

It is extreme, but not implausible when you consider that this was the successor to the fastest selling console of all time - a console that was sold out for 2 years in the US and made these people a fortune on eBay.

Not hard to believe that a sizeable number of them might've been itching for round 2...

I saw a guy on NeoGAF say a friend of his bought 38 Wii U consoles to resell. If there are more people like that, then it's certainly feasible

For a price cut, with some new games coming out, it only quadrupling is pretty bad

Keep in mind all the stock is sold out and the redelivery of stock is behind schedule. This is a significant bottle neck that could harm potential sales when the expected system seller, Soul Sacrifice, debuts in 2 days time.

Mitigating factors surface yet again, but I imagine the vita will most likely see a progressive increase in sales over this month.

I'm unsure. I don't think this will hold

Whether it holds beyond April or not I'm unsure of myself, but I think this month has been carefully timed by Sony as a good time to pounce and I think it might pay off in the mean time. Nintendo has a slightly dry month this month on both 3DS and Wii U.

One thing that does look pretty evident is that Sony might have nearly given up on the Vita if the stock available was that few in number. If they don't hurry up with the redelivery of stock which was delayed, it could bite them on the ass pretty hard.

Quadruple numbers is okay. Wasn't really expecting much but it's about building momentum so this is a good start. It should pick up steam with the PS4 being promoted, too.

At the very least it's become an awesome machine for indie games.

Wow, so it breached the 50k mark? Niiiice, hopefully it keeps it up so we can actually see some competition heat up on the dedicated video game handheld market.

Ok vita sales. Next week and beyond is what matters now. If this time next month we are back to the 10k’s a week then I don’t know what else they can do.

Great opening for Dragon Ball Heroes.

Do Nintendo have nothing planned for the Wii U on Golden Week?

I'm confused by this too. What was supposed to carry the Wii U through these months? I understand that Pikmin and Wonderfull 101 slipped but they are just two games. So what else was supposed to make people want this console? Was it the gamepad? Was the Wii name supposed to do it? Nintendoland? I really don't know.

I think they hoped things like Pikmin and Wonderful 101 would be finished during the launch window, but cranking the games out is taking longer than expected.

With the Wii receiving such scant 1st party support for so long you'd have expected them to be deep in development. How on earth has Pikmin 3 taken this long? :shakehead

A delayed game can be awesome; a rushed game is ruined forever
