General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

This week's charts are out...

http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032

Wind Waker is No5 in the Individual Formats chart and No4 in the Combined Formats chart! :D

Pretty much the best result we could've hoped for. Beaten out by only GTA5 and Fifa 14 in the Individual Formats chart and by those two games' combined versions along with F1's combined sales in the Combined Formats chart.

Not bad, but sadly there's no word on how or if Wii U hardware sales have been affected. That being said, I've been keeping an eye on its Miiverse activity in all regions to get a general idea of how its been doing...

Unsurprisingly, it hasn't done that well in Japan (TW101's US and EU Miiverse activity numbers are still individually ahead of TWWHD's in Japan for instance...), but in the US it may well have had an impact...

If we compare it to Pikmin 3's Miiverse activity in the US - that game managed to reach 60,000 users by the end of September (where that month's NPD tracking ends). The game supposedly sold around 120,000 (retail and digital combined) copies in the US by the end of August (so it would've had significantly less Miiverse users back then). Now, TWWHD managed to reach just over 50,000 Miiverse users by the end of September (and as of today, now stands at 73,312 - boosted no doubt by the game's US retail release a couple of days ago).

Now, remembering that TWWHD was released on the eShop and as part of a price dropped console bundle on September 22nd in the US, while a good few of those TWWHD users no doubt bought the game digitally via the eShop directly, I reckon it's safe to say that the majority of those Miiverse users had bought the console bundle pack (which came with a digital copy of the game). While it's hardly a scientific form of measurement, it seems to be a positive sign that TWWHD may have had an effect of hardware sales; at least in the US :) (assuming a similar ratio of Miiverse users to sales as with Pikmin 3, TWWHD may well have sold north of 120,000-130,000 in the US during those 10 days of sales; and with the majority of those sales coming from console bundles, I have a good feeling that TWWHD and the $50 price drop may have pushed Wii U hardware sales up to around 80-100K during September :) ).

And of course Zelda is about as popular in Europe as it is in the US... (Miiverse users for TWWHD in Europe are currently 30,289, but of course they would also include retail game sales so they're less telling than its US counterpart. For comparison's sake, Pikmin 3 as of today stands at 40,990; so TWWHD is clearly selling at a much faster pace than Pikmin 3 did in Europe at least :D )

Overall, the signs are looking good :)

The problem is we're forever hoping and it's continually looking like a hopeless situation.

Nintendo still need to deliver on many more fronts imo. It's good to get the install base up, but it still needs to be much more and the sooner the better, before it's completely dwarfed by the next generation instead.

What we need to accept is that the Wii U is going to be a niche console. Once we accept that, then we'll stop worrying about it outselling other things. It'll level out to acceptable sales, make Nintendo a profit and have fantastic games :)

Who do you mean by we?

Nintendo Execs and shareholders are not looking to accept that the wii u will be a niche console.

Accepting the situation would be the worst thing for Nintendo. The industry is moving at such a pace that it's sink or swim and they haven't done much swimming in recent years.

With the way even Nintendo games are selling I doubt many of them are turning a profit on Wii U and they're taking a loss on the hardware so as was said shareholders and execs can't be happy with the situation. If it weren't for the 3DS they'd be f#%ked.

Well it wouldnt be good but they have enough in reserve for the wii u to be a total failure irrespective of the 3DS.

Nintendo wont the last company to release something to market which isnt a commercial success. More important is lessons are learnt when such a thing happens.

I know they have billions in reserve in their war chest but I mean their balance sheet is not pretty thanks to the Wii U.

Wind Waker HD was supposedly developed within 6 months, so in all probability, it won't have to sell particularly well to turn a profit. And in general, look at the common complaint for all Wii U software: it feels cheap.

And if you look at NSMBU, WWHD, SMW3D, Game & Wario etc, that's mostly because those games probably WERE cheap (or at least nowhere near a AAA-budget) to develop.

Perhaps Nintendo lost money on Pikmin, but that's it.

You can add more to that list, Wii Fit U, Wii Sports HD, NSLU that Karaoke muck and Wii Party U. They are cheap and lazy and yet charge us full price.

Wonderful 101, though that was developed by Platinum, it was funded by Nintendo, it sold awful and yes Pikmin 3 must have made a loss. Lego City Undercover again must have been funded by Nintendo and sales are low.

I doubt they are losing money on the software. It's the R&D costs which were sunk into the wii u development which needs to be recouped.

Software sales can always pick up when a install base climbs. As long as the hardware isnt selling thats much more of a concern than software sales which can be covered by the install base the wii u has even though its not that big.

Wii Party U is full price with a Wii Remote Plus and a stand. Wii Sports Club is microtransactions. Karaoke is microtransactions. Wii Fit U is £20 if you already have Wii Fit and a Balance Board.

Your argument is flawed

NSMBU I may give you, as I will for Zelda because of the six month cycle, but what on earth makes you think Game & Wario and Super Mario 3D World were cheap and/or had short development cycles?

I dont really think it matters anyway. Trying to argue the price of games based on the content, development time and costs doesnt really work. I mean where would you start. AAA games £40 and then what?

Videogames have a standard price which all publishers tend to stick to regardless of how much a game cost to develop. The market then decides if they want to pay. I thought WWHD was too expensive but many people thought otherwise.

Exactly. All comes back to the install base - and that's where they need to speak to universal language of money and give it a really appealing price drop imo. They can't do anything with this console if barely anyone owns it.

Yes and I've said countless times I believe that number is €250 for a premium bundle including the pro controller. Also I'm not a fan of download codes, I want a physical copy of the game.

Not far off my own, I'm saying £199 for a premium with a pack-in. Personally I'm also the same on the download/physical front - but I think what they've done in Japan is interested. There's so much larger a margin on a downloadable title, they can afford to bundle some more in at a good price. Or sell them cheaper(a notable price difference between digital and physical could possibly sway me) - however it's again a shame that the Wii U just wasn't entirely designed with this in mind. The internal storage space is pitiful for wanting people to download, they should either have originally considered putting more memory inside or striking up some sort of hard drive bundle deals with a manufacturer.

Yeah the memory situation sux. I really dont feel I should have to buy an external drive. 32gb for a console these days is silly and it should of come with standard 250gb minimum.

It's got to the point where £199 for an underpowered, under-supported machine with dated design and UI issues - not to mention missing basic integrated functionality like a unified account system - really just doesn't cut it. You can make all the excuses you want but the occasional brilliant game, which there are arguably none of, are overwhelmingly swamped out by the negatives because of a company that refuses to grow with the times. It's like Nintendo never exited the 90s.

Holy crap @ those Wii U & Vita numbers. Vita has new model out next week so will see a bumo don’t think it will be too big though. Pokemon is out and 3DS is going to explode.

New Wii U bundles out in 3 weeks and who knows how low these sales will go before then. Under 2k?

MH4 has a 99% sellthrough. 3 weeks after release and you still cant buy the game. Incredible!!

Well, don't let it be said that the Wind Waker HD bundle didn't have an effect on hardware sales in the UK!

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/wii-u-uk-sales-spike-685-on-zelda-launch/0122477

Yeah, yeah a more than 685% increase on crap is still crap, but it definitely had an effect at least :)

Here's hoping it carries on improving!

It's a positive. Without the numbers it's hard to determine how many units were shifted but I suppose you could look at 685 percent increase of 1k (which would be generous).

From a GAF poster

Wii U software units just slightly below PSV software units at retail in September. Each accounted for 0.7% of the market, but the Wii U was apparently just below. More later, when I get time to juggle the numbers.

Yikes

Looks like it was Fifa 14 which was the reason the Vita Software sales were slightly better than the Wii U's.
