Hero-of-Time Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) Shigeru Miyamoto, father of acclaimed videogame franchises such as Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda, has been awarded with the pretigious spanish Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The award is bestowed to the individual, institution or group or individuals or institutions whose creative work or research in humanistic activities as a whole or in relation to the social communication media, within the framework of the sciences and disciplines that both activities comprise, represents a significant contribution to universal culture. The ceremony is celebrated in mid october and Miyamoto will receive the prize in Oviedo. The prince of Spain will give it in person to him. The ceremony will be broadcasted for the whole world via different channels. These awards are not only well known in Spain, but in Europe and the whole world itself, and they have progressively grown in importance since their creation in 1980. Other personalities who have received the prize in the past are Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Pedro Almodóvar, Norman Foster, Nelson Mandela, Al Gore, Günther Grass, Paul Auster, Howard Gardner, Umberto Eco and even Google, among many others. I have no idea how big this award is, but he deserves every award he can get his hands on. Edited May 23, 2012 by Hero-of-Time
Fused King Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I hope he'll be the modest Japanese that he is and responsibly turns the award down in front of the prince and gives him a copy of Wii U Music Too!
RedShell Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I have no idea how big this award isBig enough. Here's a statement from Miyamoto: I am very honoured to have received the message that I was chosen to receive the Prince of Asturias Prize for Communication and Humanities. Creating video games is very much a team effort, which is why I feel so humbled to be chosen for this honourable award. I would therefore like to receive the award on behalf of all of my friends and colleagues with whom I have been creating video games over the years. I will continue my efforts so that video games will continuously be able to offer fun and joy to people of all generations all around the world. The awards are presented in October, so looks like Miyamoto will be having a nice little holiday in Spain this year. I might go to Oviedo around then too, see if I can StreetPass him. I hope he'll be the modest Japanese that he is and responsibly turns the award down in front of the prince and gives him a copy of Wii U Music Too! *Prepares prince disguise*
Jonnas Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 These awards are not only well known in Spain, but in Europe and the whole world itself I live in Portugal, and have never heard of this award Anyway, it's always good to hear, whenever the videogame industry receives an award like this. Usually Miyamoto, too (he does deserve it, after all). Also, lol @ Miyamoto being honoured to receive the message, but not the prize itself
Fused King Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I always like the fact that Miyamoto reminds us gamers that making a game is a GROUP effort. I wish he'd just take his whole team of people when THEY receiver the price. We should never forget those working under Miyamoto. Sweating for him. Complimenting his new cologne. High-fiving him when he accepted their ideas. and, of course, his peers, who take part in awesome Japanese stuff with him like the annual bukake before E3.
RedShell Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 (edited) The actual award ceremony isn't until tomorrow, but Miyamoto is arriving in Oviedo today at 15:35 CEST. There will be a press conference at 17:30, and a tribute to video games at 19:30. Some of that should be viewable online, here or on the TVE site. *EDIT* Just watched the press conference, it wasn't great though because the interpreter was bloody terrible! Miyamoto seemed pretty nervous/confused too. Anyway, here are some pics from when he arrived: Edited October 25, 2012 by RedShell
RedShell Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Some more pics: Did anyone else watch the tribute to Miyamoto/video games yesterday? It was pretty awesome, even included some bagpipe versions of Mario and Zelda music. @Mokong X\-C was surprised by that when I mentioned it in the chat room. For anyone else that's confused by it, the bagpipes (gaita) are the traditional instrument of Asturias and some other regions in Spain. So yeah, that was pretty cool to hear. Unfortunately though the steam quality wasn't very good at all, it kept cutting out and buffering all the time. It doesn't seem like it's going to be made available to download either, which is annoying. There are a couple of vids on YouTube though: One that someone recorded from the audience: Here's a bit of vid taken from the official cameras, skip to 01:55 for Zelda's Lullaby, and to 04:45 to see Miyamoto draw Mario while the band plays the file selection music from Mario 64 : Bonus vid of Miyamoto dancing! : What a legend.
