Dog-amoto Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) There is an older thread, but it has spoilers in it, and I didn't even want to read the first post. Just started watching this, am really enjoying it - not as much as The Wire, but it's certainly fantastic television. Be nice if it was kept spoiler tagged as I'm not very far into it yet, am just up to near the end of series 2 Just seen Christopher recover from his shooting and it seems like some big shit's gonna kick off between Tony and Richie It has some genuine laugh out loud moments, including the greatest curse in the history of television Any other fans, or maybe even people who just couldn't get into it? Zell Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Funnily enough, I started watching The Sopranos after I finished The Wire. The Sopranos is consistently great and you can really jump into it anywhere and still enjoy it. It's also pretty damn funny. Funniest character has to be Paulie, followed by Ralphie. One of my favourite episodes is Pine Barrens from Season 3... ...where Paulie and Christopher get lost in the woods chasing after the Russian. Some real laugh out loud moments in that episode. "You're not gonna believe this. He killed 16 Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator!"
Charlie Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Yeah the Pine Barrens episode was absolutely hilarious. Great television. My personal favourite episode was The episode directly after where Tony gets shot and he's in a coma in hospital. Will talk more about it later, but definitely one of my favourite ever television series!
Magnus Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I feel like The Sopranos never quite got past losing its best character. And the least season was a mess. Drawn out and rushed at the same time. It was mostly really good, though.
Beast Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 This is my favourite ever show, alongside Dexter and Sons of Anarchy. The Sopranos is one of those shows I can watch again and again and never get bored. I adore it!
Oxigen_Waste Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Fantastic show, writers got lazy on the last 2 seasons, though...
Dog-amoto Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 Just watched the episode with Jennifer's rape. Really powerful stuff. Excellent episode.
Wesley Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Fantastic show, writers got lazy on the last 2 seasons, though... YOU'RE WRONG!
Oxigen_Waste Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 YOU'RE WRONG! Right... coz everything was perfectly scripted and balanced, very realistic gritty and funny and suddenly Tony decides to start killing everyone just because... terrible decision... I have yet to see a tv series that doesn't go too far at some point.

I have yet to see a tv series that doesn't go too far at some point. No way, the last series of The Sopranos was PERFECT. They took an extended break between 5 and 6 so that they could plan it properly.
Wesley Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 YEAH! You're still wrong! (In all seriousness I felt that the change felt right) It wasn't even change. It was development. Expected. I'd do the same.
Oxigen_Waste Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 C'mon, let's not be blind here. It was obviously a panic move because they didn't know how to end the thing... The season itself is mostly brilliant, but what they did with the characters was rushed and... well, amateurish, a huge Deus Ex Machina, in all honesty. Damn, even Scorcese made fun of it when he was asked how long he hoped Boardwalk would last, he just said it didn't really matter as long as they didn't go Sopranos on it. I did love the end, though... people just didn't like it because it didn't pander to audiences. But how can you people possibly defend Tony's murder rampage as a plot point? It made no sense, had no reasoning behind it and it merely served to slightly marr an otherwise perfect show... Absurdly lazy writing, they just saved themselves from having to write codas for all of them. It wasn't change or development, it was just senseless shock... The Sopranos and The Wire are the closest TV has been to perfection, and they both made the same mistake, which was to smear amateurish and surreal setpieces within a show whose whole grounding is realism and quality of writing. The 6th season of the Sopranos is still better than 90% of all other TV out there, but it's just inferior to the tightness of all the previous seasons... Btw, what's your personal take on the ending? D'you feel T died or lived?
Wesley Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I don't see why he'd have died at the end. It didn't seem like there was any reason for him to be killed. The feud between the two families had been resolved had it not? What do you think?

The feud between the two families had been resolved had it not? What do you think? I think he did... The trucker, Phil's nefew, the two black guys that his mom ordered a hit on him with, plus the fact that you're constantly seeing things from his perspective and that early season callback in the penultimate episode, Tony's conversation with Bobby about what it must be like to die... "at the end, you probably dont hear anything, everything just goes black!" So yeah, I think he did die... but hell, Chase himself keeps saying... "don't stop... believing", ahah! Anyway, wether he did or not is irrelevant and just a matter of how you like it best... the fact is, it's just an absurdly good ending, all those earlier season callbacks, amazing. And now I'm gone for a week on vacation, cya next week, lol!

Absurdly lazy writing, they just saved themselves from having to write codas for all of them. It wasn't change or development, it was just senseless shock... Tony was depressed and extremely paranoid. That's the reason he killed Christopher; he thought that Chrissy might turn to the FBI. There's no way in hell David Chase would ruin the show in the last season by lazy writing. They took a break to ensure that it did not happen.
Wesley Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I agree with Charlie! And now OxyWASTE has altered my opinion on the ending. Fucking love this show.
Dog-amoto Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 I feel like The Sopranos never quite got past losing its best character. And the least season was a mess. Drawn out and rushed at the same time. It was mostly really good, though. Are we talking about Ralphie? Simple yes or no will do as I've still not finished watching.
Magnus Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 I don't even remember who that is. I think we may have different opinions on which characters are good and on their importance.
Dog-amoto Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 Just caned this. A week ago I just started series 3, now I've just watched the final episode. Was watching about 10 or 11 episodes a day sometimes. Am just sat here in disbelief at the ending...that final scene was amazing. I really agree with @Oxigen_Waste with his interpretation of the final scene. A fantastic piece of television.
