I thought we had a few Mortal Kombat threads knocking around but I spotting nothing on the first three pages here. I was sure there was one for a GT or ScrewAttack video not so long ago. ::shrug: If anyone provides me with a good reason to merge this thread with another, I will.

I've just spent the past while lying back and watching the following two videos on GT.

Part 1

Part 2

Two nice trips down memory lane. There's also top ten worst and top ten best videos to be found on ScrewAttack which I'll just link to because opening a thread with four videos would be a bit gratuitous. :heh:

The other night I was watching one of the PAX panels which Ed Boon featured on. He said that fatalities were originally inspired by the characters getting dizzy in Street Fighter 2. He thought it would be fun to be able to do something during this, which evolved into them moving this dizziness to the end of the fights in MK before finally having the brainwave that it would be cool to finish the fight by ripping out your opponents heart.

So whats everyones thoughts and memories on fatalities, babalities and the MK series in general?

MK3 was my first MK... and I believe possibly the series high point. I loved that game and used to play so much multiplayer... sharing the keyboard (back in the day)... me using the numbers on the right of the keyboard, my friend using the letters on the far left.

So many brilliant characters, I really liked how their stories all interconnected.

The cyborg ninjas were brilliant additions and Smoke was a fantastic mystical secret character and I like his story with Sub Zero.

He had the ultimate fatility in this earth shattering...

MK4 was my next game and tellingly... my last!

There were some AWESOME fatalities/stage fatalities/animalities etc... in MK3 it was brilliant!

I always used to enjoy performing these...

Sektor was my favourite character, and coincidentally probably had some of my favourite finishers...

Jax's were also pretty great...

I think people have been very unfair on the MK series. With the exception of the spin-off games there really hasn't been any bad ones and has done a lot of a better job of transitioning to 3d than street fighter has.

it's a good series overall, and I look forward to the new one.

I'm REALLY looking forward to the new one.

The main thing I didn't like about the games from 4 onwards was the characters they started to introduce. Yes you need to keep updating, but they were really rubbish! and they stopped using some of the classics.

There was also just something about 4 that I didn't like... and I haven't been back to the series since.

The new one looks fantastic, I thought MK went downhill after number 2, especially when they started introducing all those animalities and babalities and other crap.

I think the decision to do this with MK is in no small part influenced by SFIV, which in my opinion has given a major revival to the fighting genre.

Yeah they were a bit rubbish, but I guess they were just an extra in there for those who wanted to use them. At least they didn't replace anything.

I just thought MK3 had such an awesome line-up.

Those animalities and friendship things were annoying. Just keep it simple: FATALITY.

I'm not sure how well it did amongst the MK faithful, but I bluddy loved Deadly Alliance when I played it. I used to play it over a friend's house on her PS2 before I picked it up for myself on the cube.

The amount of unlockables in that was insane. Also, the gameplay itself with the multiple fighting styles was great fun.

I don't really see the problem with Animalities & Friendships... they were just there for a laugh/something different IF you felt like a change/surprise at the end of the match.

Some of the Friendships were actually quite funny, and a few of the animalities kinda cool. The animalities were just expanding off of Lui Kangs MK2 Dragon Fatality anyway... and giving all the characters one.
