NEW YORK, August 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of downloadable video games, today announced a multi-year licensing agreement with Interplay to develop, distribute and publish Earthworm Jim, a popular run and gun platform video game featuring an earthworm who dresses up in a Super Suit to fight evil. The game will make its way to mobile, WiiWare, PlayStation Network, with an exclusive one month run on Xbox Live® Arcade.

"We are delighted to partner with Interplay to bring Earthworm Jim to multiple downloadable platforms," said Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president, Gameloft. "The game, with its humorous and edgy style, is a great fit for today's gamer who craves a fully immersive experience that is fun and easily accessible. We look forward to delivering a fantastic game."

"Earthworm Jim resonates with millions of people worldwide and we are excited to have one of the best developers in the industry create this game for a new audience," said Herve Caen, CEO, Interplay. "Gameloft's creativity coupled with its innate knack for innovative games, makes us 100% confident that the result will be nothing short of stellar."

Initially released in 1994, Earthworm Jim's games garnered such a cult following that the character's popularity took him far beyond video games into an animated TV series, Toys and Comic books. Earthworm Jim centers around an ordinary earthworm who engages in normal worm activities- eating dirt, crawling and fleeing from hungry birds- that is until he comes across a high tech indestructible space suit. Jim takes refuge in the space suit while fleeing from hungry birds. The suit's powerful atomic particles cause him to grow and obtain newfound powers.

The game will be available in the last quarter of 2009. For the latest information on the game, follow Gameloft on our Twitter feed: http://www.twitter.com/Gameloft

The Mega Drive version is already available on the VC, but it's going to get a remake for WiiWare!

Gameloft revealed their plans to bring EarthWorm Jim back to the digital distribution services last month. To know more about the remake of EarthWorm Jim we contacted and spoke to a Gameloft representative and asked them a couple of questions.

We can reveal that EarthWorm Jim will be based on the Sega Genesis version of the game, but is being reworked completely from scratch without the original game's code. The game will be enhanced from the original game, featuring better graphics, smoother animations and will feature several difficulty levels - something not in the original.

While there are no screenshots of the console version of the game, there are a few iPhone screenshots floating around. The above image showcases the difference between the original and the iPhone remake, so we can hopefully expect that much care and dedication to the original game to flow through the rest of the remake.

Gameloft are also aware of the chronology of Earthworm Jim. The Special Edition, released on the Sega CD and PC, had an additional level called "Big Bruty". We can now confirm that the game will include this level.

The game will use leaderboards to track killed enemies, total time, and several other statistics. They also stated there will be "some surprises, which will be revealed later".

When asked whether the original team, such as Dave Perry nor Doug Nepal, are involved in the project, Gameloft responded with a no - however the game will contain the original music created by Tommy Tallarico.

As for the Wii version, the game is being developed by one of Gameloft's many development studios, and have several production teams working to maintain consistency between the platforms. The graphics are "optimized for each platform", so WiiWare fans won't be losing anything but a bit of resolution.

Finally, we asked whether there was a chance of Earthworm Jim coming to the PSP, as the game was announced a few days before PSP minis were revealed. Gameloft are "considering" bringing Earthwom Jim to the PSP at a later date, but are currently working on numerous other PSP minis titles.

Earthworm Jim will be released later this year, with a one-month exclusivity period for the Xbox Live Arcade version.

Earthworm Jim 4 confirmed:

- animated feature film is dead

- Earthworm Jim 4 is still happening

- Earthworm Jim 4 is confirmed for Wii

Shame the film got cancelled. It wasn't confirmed if it's a full Wii release or Wiiware.

Edit: Never mind, seems it wasn't confirmed.

Time to remove this topic in other consoles.

8th: With Jim also heading to Xbox Live, WiiWare and PSN, how different are these versions of the game from the DSi version?

A-JC: Since a port of the Genesis game is already available on the Wii Shop Channel, we did not think it would make sense to add a remake there. So, we decided to focus on HD versions for home consoles like Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Theses HD versions will obviously be different from the Nintendo DSi version as they will feature entirely reworked graphics to fit HD standards. But there’s more: Achievements and Trophies can be unlocked respectively in the XBLA and PSN versions. And we’re promising many exclusive features, such as brand new levels with exclusive enemies and up to 4 players in co-op multiplayer!

?

Well that implies

that not much has improved from the original and that if you own the original there is no need to get the new version.

It's very much an unnecessary remake, like most remakes. but oh well if its cheap then why not.

from a sales point of view. WTF are they thinking not releasing it on the wii and dsi?

Completed my first run through on normal, updated graphics look great. Probably play it through original mode next. Unlocked 3 bonus stages which you play in a separate mode. The Big Bruttus stage wasn't there, although the suitless bit in the first stage is.

You can unlock some gamerpics and avatar reward which is nice.
