CoolFunkMan Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Well, I did get the game in the post today, and I've had a few hours with it. To put it simply, it's great! I haven't really explored the world yet, although it doesn't seem massive, but it's big. The side quests aren't all that tbh, so far I've done two 'ambush' ones (where you need to defeat a few enemies that pass by, whilst protecting your team), and I failed a mission where I had to deliver a few beer kegs to a beach. The latter was more interesting, but it'll be difficult methinks (I'm never to careful in those missions ) The main story-arc is pretty decent, although I have to admit, it does seem to be flying by rather quickly. Hopefully the missions aren't as quick as people say they are. It's not laugh out loud funny, but it's got a silly enough charm to it for me to have a smirk on my face whilst I play it. Oh, and there actually is some challange to it too, I died a couple of times on a boss until I realised a decent tactic. And as for the celebrity appearances, I've so far come across Lemmy and Ozzy. Whilst Lemmy seems a little half-arsed (but then he is the more laid-back type), Ozzy puts on a great performance. I'm looking forward to seeing more famous peeps in the game (including a rumoured cameo by Kyle Gass.) So far though, I do recommend it. It's certainly a well crafted game, and is a lot of fun to play. I just hope the lasting appeal stays.
Strange Cookie Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 It's been a long time that I played a game that was as genuinly funny and original as Brütal Legend. It's great! Guess that's the difference between Peter Molyneux and Tim Shafer. Peter promises, but Tim delivers. Kudos!
ThePigMarcher Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Any chance, that you guys have tested the online side of things yet ? I probably will still be picking this up on Friday, but if the campaign is as short as a lot of people are claiming then I'm hoping the multiplayer may offer some sort of longevity.
Ganepark32 Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 GT review is up for those interested. Watched it earlier this morning and I'm sure they said that the online does extend the gameplay beyond the 10 hour or so single player adventure.
CoolFunkMan Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I might try it tomorrow. I usually like to complete the single player campaign of a game first though. Oh, and btw, Jack Black himself is in the game, but not actually as a character. You'll all see what I mean when you first load up the game...
Roostophe Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Play.com have dispatched my copy. I reckon I'll have it Friday.
Strange Cookie Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Any chance, that you guys have tested the online side of things yet ? I probably will still be picking this up on Friday, but if the campaign is as short as a lot of people are claiming then I'm hoping the multiplayer may offer some sort of longevity. Nope, but I'm not a online multiplayer-player anyway. But from what i've heard is that the multiplayer is pretty good! And the singleplayer, while not the longest in the world, rarely has a dull moment in it (well, so far). It's rather short (well, 8-10 hours, pretty decent), but it's sweet and best of all, it rocks. Oh, and btw, Jack Black himself is in the game, but not actually as a character. You'll all see what I mean when you first load up the game... Yes, that was unexpected... and very awesome too! That's an exemple of nice little touches most games today lack jadajadajada rantrantrant. Hey, it's my birthday soon. I have the right to say things were better in 'my days'.
ViPeR Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I saw an interview with the developer that basically said this was initially going to be a multiplayer orientated game and that the single player is really to 'teach' you how to survive online. In fact the online aspect is pretty much the main reason i'm getting this. Hopefully it should come today, it said next day delivery and was dispatched yesterday.
Roostophe Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Play.com have dispatched my copy. I reckon I'll have it Friday. Whaddya know? I got it today. Pretty sweet so far. This game feels like it was made for somebody who likes metal and rock like I do, and makes me certain that most of the stuff mentioned in the Music Thread is just shit only liked by complete sissys!
ViPeR Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 It's got the feel of a 64 era Rare game, which is good. Very much like Conkers Bad Fur Day. Except Metal. I tried the online thing but got my ass kicked. It took me ages to realise you had to click the right thumbstick to fly in order to build units...
ThePigMarcher Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Picked it up this morning and managed to have a quick blast with it. I have only done the opening couple of missions because I want to make sure that I take my time to explore as much as possible, especially with the warnings about the games brevity (I'm already sitting at 12% complete). Loving it so far, and just driving the Deuce around listening to the epic soundtrack is pure gaming and metal bliss. Lovingly crafted world, and uncovered a few bits and pieces but it looks like uncovering the lot may add a fair bit to the total length of the game. The first lot of side quests have opened up and I wasn't sure what the hell I was doing on the 'ambush' ones but cleared a couple somehow, and cleared one of the driving ones and the opening hunter mission. The side quests seem OK but nothing special. I had a mess around with the AI training ground for the multiplayer (but only on the lowest difficulty setting) just to see what it was like. I didn't have a clue what was going on, but I should really advance the story a lot more then it should become a lot clearly. I get the feeling it'll be a while before I attempt an online battle for real. The script, humour and cut scenes so far can't be faulted in the slightest. Will have to see what else the game brings but early impressions are favourable.
Goafer Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Brutal Legend is ace. That is all. *Goes back to playing Brutal Legend*
Roostophe Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 This track, that I discovered from the game, is fucking immense: Audio
daftada Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Had a review copy pop through my letter box this morning - gonna stick it on now and see what its like.
Ganepark32 Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Just finished the game on normal. Have to say it's an awesome game. Soundtrack was brilliant, Jack Black was awesome as Eddie, the cameos from Ozzy and the likes were just fantastic, art style was equally great (although the graphics could have done with a tidy up) and the length was just right. The ending did feel a bit abrupt but for me, it didn't really come along faster than I wanted as I indulged in all of the secondary missions and yeh, they're just repeated measures used over and again but I enjoyed playing them. Got 86% completed so need to search out all the little hide away collectibles and things as well as try the multiplayer. I'd definitely say if you're a metal fan, you'll love this and I think those who aren't will find something in it to like (the humour was great, taking the piss out of glam rock and goths/emos so that's something that should come across regardless of musical tastes). If you're not wanting to pay £40 for it, I guess it'll drop in price swiftly so I'd recommend you try it. Personally I'd recommend it at £40 but then I just really enjoyed the whole thing.
ThePigMarcher Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Just completed the 'Dry Ice, Wet Graves' mission so it looks like I am close to wrapping this up now, however, I'm still surprisingly low on some collectables so that'll give me a good excuse to stretch it out a little further. Currently on 81%. That last stage battle gave me some problems (I have been struggling with the RTS aspect a bit anyway) after I had a slow start. I was playing catch up all the way through the battle and couldn't turn it around. Two and a half hours later the 'Brutal Defeat' screen came up, but I wasn't as annoyed as I expected due to the epic nature of the battle. Strange thing was, I reattempted the thing straight away and managed to wrap it up in ten minutes. Bizarre turnaround. Loving every minute of the game (despite my RTS struggles), and have only attempted a couple of online battles, with varying results. It will be such a shame when it is completed.
Roostophe Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I struggled with the RTS battles as well. I'm pretty certain that I completed them in completely the wrong way. I dunno what the wrong way could be, and how could I do them the wrong way when I completed them. But I just went through them thinking my approach wasn't the best way. It's all a bit...
ThePigMarcher Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Just finished the game on normal. Have to say it's an awesome game. The ending did feel a bit abrupt but for me. I have just finished it and would agree that it did feel like a rather abrupt end. That being said, I managed to stretch it out to just under 19 hours and I still have some collectables to locate. Finished on 93%. A completely wonderful experience, with very little I can find fault with, and I don't think that I have been this gutted to finish a game for years, I just wanted to keep going. Hopefully, Tim Schafer really does have some 'awesome' DLC planned as I would snap it up without a heartbeat. I struggled with the RTS battles as well. I'm pretty certain that I completed them in completely the wrong way. The way I see it, however you complete them is the right way, but I completely get that 'unsure' feeling. Suppose I had better get round to finding some time for multiplayer practice (and man, do I need it) before everyone moves on to the next thing.
Solo Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Loving the game so far. The humour and characters are a welcome change to the coldness of many games recently. @ Pigmarcher, I'm having troubles with the battle at the dry ice cave thingy, where you fight (Othelios?) minions. I'm never sure what the best units are, I keep getting stuck in some sort of stalemate and it takes me ages to progress!! What strategy did you use?
ThePigMarcher Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) What strategy did you use? It may have been pure luck on my part but :- As soon as I started I fired off the Rockblock solo and upgraded my stage. I noticed that the longer the battle went on the harder it was to get an advantage, because those Reapers were a pain in the arse. So my plan was to get in early before they had the chance to build those units. I pretty much only had Headbangers, Riot Girls and Fire Barons (pretty useful if Reapers appear),and went after the first Geyser, once that was secured I just upgraded those units and kept firing of Rockblock as soon as it was available. Once the units were upgraded, I pretty much sent them all to attack the rival stage and they didn't really get a chance to mount a counterattack. If any counter is coming it was usually only the basic units because you have been slowing production, so a few Facemelters took care of that problem. Like I said, probably pure luck. Was on Normal difficulty BTW, I seriously doubt that would work on Brütal, and I'm not looking forward to tackling that when I go through again. Edited October 20, 2009 by ThePigMarcher
Solo Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Hmm I don't have this Rockblock solo. I'm missing quite a few, I'm crap at locating everything! I did use the giant meteor summoning solo a few times though I did it though in the end, like you said before I slugged through it one round only to get no where, then tried again and did it in 10 minutes, I didn' realise there was a merch stand on the left side haha. I just charged through with a load of headbangers and the giant speaker men. I'm not good at what units are good at what, I suck so much at RTS games. And yeah I'm doing mine on Brutal (as I can't be bothered to go through again for the achievment).
ThePigMarcher Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 And yeah I'm doing mine on Brutal (as I can't be bothered to go through again for the achievment). Which brings up the one major flaw with the game IMO. Only one save file, especially as the Chapter option is essentially useless. I really hope they find a way of patching this, as I'm not sure whether to go for the 100% completion on my current file or start again on Brutal and tackle it then.
Roostophe Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I've found a huge flaw in this game! Cradle of Filth on the soundtrack! Goddammit, I couldn't turn it off in the battle it came on. I was raging; all I could do to stop such ear rape was to finish the battle really quickly! I can't believe they'd do something like that, especially after cracking out Mr Crowley by Ozzy "Guardian of Metal" Osbourne just seconds earlier! It's just completely wrong!
Ganepark32 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 ^ Funnily enough, I actually rather enjoyed the Cradle of Filth song and it's probably the only one from them that I can tolerate. As the game is, it's supposed to sort of work as a celebration of all forms of metal so it gets a place in there rightly alongside many of the other obscure death metal/black metal bands so I wouldn't see it as a flaw on those grounds but I would agree they could have perhaps included something better to come after Mr. Crowley, which I thought was used superbly, although I would have like it used more as it's an awesome song.
