Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 In the computer sense of course. A few days ago we got this pop up that comes up as an invoice for 'Platte services'. It's also come up on the desktop as 'Platte Account' and my dad tried uninstalling it but it's reappeared. My dad's gonna ring the number on the invoice (from work to prevent tracing, haha, makes me laugh), but there must be a way of getting rid of it. Any ideas??
MoogleViper Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 It could be malware. Did it come up in your documents or on your desktop or anything?
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Yeah it's come up on the desktop as 'Platte account'. What's malware?
MoogleViper Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Yeah it's come up on the desktop as 'Platte account'. What's malware? It's a way for people to get access to or just damage your computer. I'm guessing you don't have any anti-malware software then? Superantispyware says it detects malware so you might want to try that. It's free. http://www.superantispyware.com/
Nolan Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Avast AVG Spybot Search and Destroy Registy Cleaner (requires some knowledge, but basically if you don't know what it is don't delete it) Kaspersky Those are decent anti-spyware and anti-virus programs. Most can remove iirc. Others detect, oh and they may conflict with each other so be careful aobut having too many. Oh, and here is a list of what not to use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fake_anti-spyware_programs#Partial_list_of_rogue_software
Jimbob Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 You could also try Ad-Aware which is a good program for removing Spyware, Ad-ware and Malware.
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Thankyou all muchly. I think we did a spybot search and destroy test and it didn't do anything. I'll try the superantispyware and adaware, hopefully sort it out.
Nolan Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Oh, a system restore may work, but in my experience they never have.
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 What's a system restore? Yes I'm a brunette, hard to believe I know.
Kirkatronics Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 What's a system restore? Yes I'm a brunette, hard to believe I know. You can restore your computer to an earlier date when it was ok. What operating system are you on? EDIT: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore
MoogleViper Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 What's a system restore? Yes I'm a brunette, hard to believe I know. It's where you restore your computer to how it was previously. Personally I'd try the other anti-spyware software first. Although if you do want to system restore then Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Restore That's how it is for Vista. I'm pretty sure it's similar for XP.

I think on XP its not in accesories. Not sure though now.
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Yeah I'm on vista, rubbish hate rubbish stupid vista. Yeah that sounds kind of scary to be doing, try the other stuff first and then see what happens. Thanks
Kirkatronics Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Yeah I'm on vista, rubbish hate rubbish stupid vista. Yeah that sounds kind of scary to be doing, try the other stuff first and then see what happens. Thanks You can undo the restore in the same way, simple =]

Kirkatronics Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I'm not sure if it will actually work though as it doesn't affect your files. Its worked for me in the past, if your correct i dont understand why though :s
MoogleViper Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Its worked for me in the past, if your correct i dont understand why though :s Well it all depends on the reason. It's worked for me before but that's when my computer has inexplicably decided to spaz out in some way or other.
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 the superanti thing is scanning now, taking a while, but I'm sure that's a good sign. Yeah.
Kirkatronics Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 the superanti thing is scanning now, taking a while, but I'm sure that's a good sign. Yeah. Yea, means its doinf a comprehensive scan of all your files. If you do things it could slow it down, but i always carry on as normal. Good luck anyway : peace:
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Threats detected so far= 405 Computer= fucked. lolol, we'll see I guess.
nightwolf Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 This is why you should have at least one decent piece of software on your computer. You don't go checking your bank details on that computer do you?
Molly Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 we have antivirus and antispyware, but obviously not good enough.
nightwolf Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 It never is unfortunetly. My parents had the same issue, their laptop had a few decent antivirus and spyware and now their laptop is near enough useless. Had to buy another it had been destroyed and intercepted that much!
Mr_Odwin Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Tell your dad to stop surfing dodgy porn sites.
