Posted October 9, 2008 It's that time of year again, my Norton 360 sub has run out and while I've had no real issues with Norton I'm not convinced it's doing all it should and I think that it may be a waste of PC resources as well as money if I resub. :/ So basically are there any good alternatives out there, either Free or Sub based that y'know... actually work properly? Posted October 10, 2008 If you want to pay NOD32 and Kaspersky are well regarded. AVG is free, but apparently can be quite the resource hog. I don't use anti-virus at all. I'm taking a gamble. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

In my opinion, most (or all) anti virus are useless when it comes to the real threats in the internet and are resource hogs. Windows Vista or XP(SP3) are now very secure systems, with integrated malware detecting software and firewalls. Unless you go around shady websites downloading keygens that ask for administrative access to you computer, then what you really need is a good browser that detects phishing (the real source of bank account theft) and other "website tricks". Depends what sort of stuff you download.... NOD32 is a very good program that is not invasive and uses very little system resources. Posted October 17, 2008 A friend recommended a really nice program to me recently. It's called sandboxie. You can launch any program in it. What it does, is preventing access to the harddrive of any program launched therein. So this means that if you want to mess around with something you can safely do it without harming your system. This also includes going to unsafe websites in a sandboxed browser. Downloading can be a bit of a hassle though but is still possible. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
