IGN has an interview about Skate 2 and a trailer with new gameplay footage

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/895/895828p1.html

Is anyone else looking forward to this? I loved the first skate, but it was one of those titles that I kept thinking "the sequel will probably improve on this and that". I wanted female skaters, customisable areas and freestyle Mullen-esque manual tricks to name a few things.

From the video it looks like there will be female skater options - and also the ability to push around benches and customise the area a bit. Looks like you can also get off the board! While I hated this feature in the Tony Hawk series, it was a bit annoying on Skate. when you couldn't get up a set of stairs to reach a particular spot without going a long way round. I also spy lip tricks and rail hopping tricks :)

I wasn't referring to female pros, what I meant was that there was no option to be a girl in the character creator :) Now, since there's a girl skater in the trailer, there's a chance that you will be able to play as a girl too.

Well more-of-the-same is fine by me! I've not played teh first to death yet, but tehre were a few kinks that shorty and I found with it (as he's mentioned in his first post.. and, er, other stuff that I've forgotten!)... and yeah. More! woo!

Demo's out tomorrow on 360 :D game itself released on 23rd I believe. I know nobody else really cares, but I'm totally looking forward to it :)

Not played the first, keeping an strong eye on the second though. Can see me parting with my cash for either this or LOTR, most likely this.

Time to hassle for a review copy :(.

Skate 2 demo is terrible.

The graphics are worse and the running off you're board is horrid.

Didn't you really like the first?

*moves posts* please stick with official threads where possible rather than the general 360 thread :)

Yeah, so far I'm not hugely feeling it, coming off the board is really, really bad - it shouldn't have been done. It sucked in Tony Hawks and it sucks in this. A quick example of why it controls bad is that tapping down on the left stick doesn't turn you round, or even run backwards - you can only run forward and you have to turn the camera with the sluggish right stick to do so. They could've copied almost any dedicated 3rd person game's controls but no... they had to come up with something themselves, something crap. You also run up stairs really stupidly and slowly, taking every step one at a time and looking a fool while doing it, which is lame because that's really the only thing to get off the board for.

The graphics don't seem worse to me so far, just a bit... grungier. I've only had a few minutes on it though so I'm gonna give it another shot :-O

Edit: ok, I finished the demo and I don't hate it or anything :) I probably won't buy it at full price though, or perhaps I'll grab a good deal then trade it back in.... The biggest issue is clunky off-board crap which wasn't necessary, and just a basically bad choice of demo mechanic. What they should've done is given us the whole city, or a big chunk, and a short time limit - similar to the Beautiful Katamari demo or, cast your mind back many years, the original demo for the original GTA on the PC. The game just doesn't feel like skate without the freedom of doing what you want where you want.

2nd Edit: Oh man, the Hall of Meat multiplayer makes it all worthwhile. You only get one spot but we spent about 2 hours doing a 3 player game. The idea is to launch yourself off couple of set ramps and try and hurt yourself as much as possible. 20-25k was about the best any of us could get until Nikki got this weird twitching thing that extended the time bonus to about 7 seconds and racked up 39,000 points.

No mention of my killer finalé? Wait, I did do a killer finalé at some point, right?

Hall of Meat is to Skate what Crash mode was to Burnout. There's a sheer exhileration in purposefully orchestrating massive damage and cringing to a mild chorus of "oooooh" and "fuuuck, man". After a few (dozen) 3-player carnages on the same spot there were a few miiild annoying things; the scoring for damage is fickle and sporadic, and there's always a chance that if you land the right way and start flidding out, a magical twitching arm will rack up an insane score (a lá nami, as mentioned).

The Own the Spot demo was surprisingly tricky for a demo. We still replayed it over and over again, and if anything I think it just demonstrated to us how lax we've become with the controls and the timing.

There's a bit more freedom with self-customisation (albeit mostly just hinted at in the demo, thanks to massive locks on half the stuff) which leads to semi-morbid whalegirls, but the addition of zomgfemales is hampered once you start playing when you realise you look like a 12 year old boy.

The whole notion of stepping off your board has added a couple of unrealistic elements to what should be touted as a game series decidedly based on realism; you can tap Y to get rid of your board at any point - even in mid air - and too often you can land, from too high up and going too fast, safe and sound, already jogging. Also tapping y again summons the jedi telekinesis powers that all skaters so obviously have, which just looks silly.

I'm glad I've still got Skate to finish because the demo certainly left me wanting to play more, but the demo really didn't show all that much of the city (as shorty said), and didn't compare in that respect too kindly with the Skate demo.

They did make some changes between that demo and the final release, mind you, but I doubt they'll map in a whole new off-board control set :/

Wow, surprisingly long post. And nobody cares except me and shorty! lololo

I tried the demo and hated it. Mainly because it's a realistic skateboarding game. I'll stick with THPS4.

Did you not understand the point of the whole point of the franchise?

What they have done graphicly is horrid, it looks so much like tony hawks. The fact you can get off your board means the level design will just be lazy unlike the first one. I dont understand why there is so much story. The only good thing is the cameos which if you dont actually follow the skate scene you wont even notice. The foot plant thing is balls. So much hatred for this game ):

I was super excited.

I didn't know a single thing about it other than the name.

try the demo of the first game if you're bored some time, it's on XBL too. It's a much better demo, it's realistic but after a short time it gets so fun, much better than TH has been for many, many years.

The Skate 2 demo is pretty poo, but I get the feeling the whole game could still be great. Being confined to that tiny park is awful, but the multiplayer mode is a lot of fun and rolling around the whole city could still be just as much fun as the old one. Handplants are done really nicely and as long as you don't stay off your board too long, it's not too bad.

Literally no one does hand plants. honestly they should have told the fans to suck it over this, and stuck to what they said the games was about and that its was for skateboarders. Did the original skate have screen wobble when you landed an ollie? Also the HUD takes up way too much room.

I do still like the game and will buy it on release but thats only because i live in hope. And i figure it will be fun when it isnt limited to 5 mins.

I remember playing the skate demo when it was first released and never really "got" the controls. I tried this one too, and while I now have no problem with the right stick stuff, the thnig bothering me now is the clunky movement, the weird character models and the frankly pretty awful graphics.

Now that I'm accustomed to the controls I may buy a second hand copy of the original, but I very much doubt I'll be getting this.

Vert skaters do them in competitions though, and the handplants in skate 2 look like the ones they do, they're quick, up and down like you just barely put your hand down - not like Tony Hawks where you could just balance there like an acrobat for 30 seconds
