"So What Do You Want To Do With Yourself?"

Recommended Posts

From the other side of the question, it's really just an ice breaker.

I'm 30, and most of my pupils are 17-21. I sometimes ask the question for something to talk about, mostly to the ones who aren't into the stuff I am.

I don't mind if they say that they don't know, after all, I didn't know at that age and the job that I do now, I only decided to do it when I was 25, and that was only because I wanted a job where I could come home during the day because of my dog.

Hardly a massively thought out career choice!!

No thats fine, I understand its one of those cliche ice-breakers but its annoying when people seem dissapointed/angry that you don't know. I had someone moan at me last week saying "you're spending all this time and money and you don't know what for?" Swinebag!

the question is a lot worse if you have to explain that you dropped out of university! at least I got myself a 'good job' aka office, 9-5 which makes the question less painfull.

hopefully in a few years time once the open university is finished i'll be doing something with science. Or, if I ever get my arse in gear, I'll be a writer.

And I think thats fair enough, you've just finished your first year.

Today actually someone came into work who I've known for about 12 years, but lost touch of recently. He asked me what I was doing now and told him studying media at uni and he asked me what I wish to do after and I said I don't know and he kinda gave me that look (before leading to a crazy tangent like he tends to).

Thing is I didn't give him that look when he told me he know makes carpets. I mean really, in this day and age is that a career? Yes Kidderminster is famous for its carpets and yes my nan and many people from her generation did make a career from it but I don't judge people (out loud) for just going from job to job.

I think that was mostly just rant.

I've never seen anyone fustrated at somebody for not knowing what they want in life. I guess European culture is a bit different in that sense.

In America, the only time it is frowned upon is if you really don't do a damn thing with your life. I know tons of people who are going into universities and have not a damn clue what they want yet and it is acceptable. Society views it as they are moving forward and as they move forward, they'll find themselves in where they want to be soon enough. It just takes time.

I believe that all people will eventually find their calling as long as they are willing to get up on their own two feet and simply walk. Opportunity exists for those who are willing to pursue it. That's me though.

I feel that. Everyone seems so shocked I'm not a big media producer yet.

What is your degree in Murray? I know your dissertation was about video games so I just presumed you were doing a game-adjacent course. But was it media?

But I think I may be getting closer to what I to be....this week. Could all change next week.

I don't know what i want.

I really don't like my job, at all. Its boring and i hate coming to work every morning. I get paid far less than anyone else here, which is infuriating considering the amount of actual work i do. I have to get a pay rise if i want to move as at the moment i'm down to a few pounds each month and honestly, i don't exactly "buy" much outside of games, food, rent.

More than this question, everyone seems to think I want to become a teacher. As if I want to keep going to school/uni when I'm finally free.

I've had one in my name for years. I just can't remember what it is. (got one for photography...apparently)

But you get to terrorise others! That and the golden handshake are why 70% sign up.

I wouldn't mind being a lecturer in like twenty years because id be awesome but not now. As you say, need time away from education.

I knew i wanted to be a videogames journalist from a pretty young age, but i never dreamt i could get there. That's why i did a multimedia computing degree to keep my options open, but even still during that time i would say the same hing when people asked me what i wanted to do, and they would always say why arn't you doing a jounalism or english degree. Looking back it makes me so happy that i can laugh in their faces!

The scary thing is, even though i do have the job i dreamt of, it doesn't pay very well at all and its difficult to move up so i might eventually have to give it up, say, should my gf get pregnant or something. I'd be so lost, i wouldnt know what to do for work if that happened.

It doesn't matter if you dont know what you want to do though. Most people dont. Life is supposed to be a journey, and i could never be one of those people who go to uni for near 10 years studying to be doctors or lawyers.
