flameboy Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Yup yup, should be if the boyfriend feels better/wants to go home ^_^ What time? (this will be my first PSN multiplayer experience mwahahahaaa) maybe around 7.30ish...
tapedeck Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Right, so I've torn myself away from GTA enough to come and ask some questions about my brand new PS3 (40gb model) here. No doubt it's a powerful machine but I'm a little lost as to what it can do apart from play games... I thought you could plug in any USB device and view pics/movies etc...Nothing works for me that way. Am I doing sommat wrong? What is this media server malarky? I thought the PS3 was wireless yet I have no idea of checking or getting this to work. I've had to plug it into the ethernet connection but swapping between the PC and PS3 is cumbersome. Does the 40gb model NOTplay PS2 games? But PS1? Think I'm right yeah? Are there any cool tips/tricks to getting AVI movies to work from a USB dongle? The initial HOME page is tatty and has waaaaay too many options on it (going downwards)...Is it possible to streamline this at all? Can I burn Music/DVD's to the HD? Bluetooth devices...can I send from my mobile phone to the PS3? Or is it just for controllers/headsets? Anyone recommend anyting else tips wise for the system itself? ...Erm, think that's it. When spending 300 notes I think I was expecting it to be a little easier to fathom out.
Guest Jordan Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I thought you could plug in any USB device and view pics/movies etc...Nothing works for me that way. Am I doing sommat wrong? Most devices do work, but you know the obvious thing is that they're switched on. Secondly, the PS3 has to have drivers for them (usually it uses a generic storage medium device) so some times it doesn't work if the device requires specialist drivers. What is this media server malarky? I thought the PS3 was wireless yet I have no idea of checking or getting this to work. I've had to plug it into the ethernet connection but swapping between the PC and PS3 is cumbersome. Wireless can be enabled in the network connections menu, set up a new connection and select wireless rather than wired (which is the automatic default) Media server means dragging shit onto the PS3 HDD and then using it from there... its pretty crap. Does the 40gb model NOTplay PS2 games? But PS1? Think I'm right yeah? This is correct. Are there any cool tips/tricks to getting AVI movies to work from a USB dongle? DivX works, Xvid doesn't. The initial HOME page is tatty and has waaaaay too many options on it (going downwards)...Is it possible to streamline this at all? The XMB can be theme'd but it cannot have options removed. However, you can press triangle to sort by album on your games lists and so on. Ie: I have two folders, demos and full games. Simply go into the information of each game and add a name, so that they go into folders. Can I burn Music/DVD's to the HD? No, as far as i'm aware. Bluetooth devices...can I send from my mobile phone to the PS3? Or is it just for controllers/headsets? Very few bluetooth devices work outside of the PSP/Headsets/PS3 controllers/remotes. Anyone recommend anyting else tips wise for the system itself? Yes, don't use it as a media server. Use a PC instead and stream off that.
Esequiel Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Ok mate i can help you here. I was daunted at first aswell but trust me when you get it all set up right its great. First of all Wireless: I assume you have a wireless router.... Ok. Turn on your PS3. Set up a username etc and go to the network settings. Let it find your wireless network and stick in your details i.e WEP password. That is literally it Then just join the Playstation Network and your online. You can stream movies and music etc via your PC to your PS3. Go into your PC and log into your router. The easiest way to get this working is to set your PS3 as your DMZ server, it sounds complicated but its not. Your PS3 will have an I.P address, something like 10.0.0.2, you will be able to fnd the address by logging into your router and checking the attached devices. Whatever the I.P address is set that as your DMZ server (the option is in your router under WAN settings). Then download Tversity its free and easy to use. Once installed add any movies or music you want to watch and you should see them under the PS3 media server tab. You can then copy the files onto your PS3 HD should you wish. The PS3 40GB wont play PS2 games but runs most PS1 games through emulation np. Dont know much about the bluetooth i only use the headset
Esequiel Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 DivX works, Xvid doesn't. Yes, don't use it as a media server. Use a PC instead and stream off that. Im pretty impressed with the way it works! Xvid works fine for me, streaming through Tversity. < wins the posting race. Your a Git >.<
Guest Jordan Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Tversity converts on the fly and as such isn't a 'streaming' only application. Thus if your PC can't keep up with it, it'll have a fit and be extremely laggy. I use Windows Media Connect 2.0 (yeahhhh kickin' it old school) which just streams. My server PC at home is only a P3 1ghz... so obviously i can't use Tversity.

But yeah hes right, if your PC is crap you wouldnt be able to use Tversity.
tapedeck Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Sweet, I'll sit and have a gander at all of the above. Cheers guys, great help as always
Caris Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Tapedeck, when you put your USB stick in. Press Triangle and display all. You might not of been doing that. Hope it helps.
tapedeck Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Oooooo, that was it. Feck! Damn this insane technology. It's just. so. complex. Triangle...old school. :p Now I've sat and pimped up the ps3 back to GTAIV. I have no idea what to get after that. Burnout3 was awesome so may get Paradise. Also another question... When playing a normal DVD upscalling occurs ya? (I'm on a HDMI connection)...what is this "full" etc option? I have nee idea. The instruction manual doesn't cover it as far a I can remember. And, any tips on where to get cheap Blu-Ray Movies? And, are they region free? Is it just the games locked? I have no clue.
Caris Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Full means if it's a 4:3 image, it will upscale it and stretch to Widescreen. By the way, add me Mech-Maverick

By the way, add me Mech-Maverick Can you burn blu ray's and then play them on the ps3? (Not that I have the ability to burn blu rays). My buddy reckons he has a stash. I call bullsh!t. They are really expensive in the UK, is it not worth buying the DVD and letting the upscaller do the rest? Or is the difference THAT good?

Are you talking about the cost of Blu Rays? IMO yes the difference is that good. Its like saying sex with 1 woman is great, but sex with 2 women? Its just incredible.

I call bullsh!t. With the correct burning software, anything is possible. You can get BD-Burners and BD-R's now, although they are more expensive than actually buying a BD from a shop...

Oooo, so technically everything can be copied I presume (and hope) games are encrypted though. On another note, I'm really looking forward to HOME...Seems a little lacking in online aspects. The message system works well, and is talking (presumably through an official headset only) to friends seamless?

I've seen not seen any PS3 games on the scene... but they'de be huge if they were released. File size wise. You can use any bluetooth headset, any at all. However i don't own one so i've not tried it.
Esequiel Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I picked up a headset for about £12 from Play which works fine. Just dont get your hopes up about the online expirience its not as good as the 360. Also I'm really looking forward to HOME so were most people a year ago
flameboy Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 some newer films look awesome...but some older stuff does look great but not much better than an upscaled SD DVD...mostly because they were never filmed to be HD.

I want a bluetooth headset for MGO will be awesome, some great teamwork with jsut text, chat would be awesome.
Daft Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 I got Super Stardust HD. Its a real blast. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it since I'm not too big a fan of Geometry Wars. I love the fact you can actually have a custom soundtrack... It's actually one of the big reasons I bought it. Edit: This is pretty addictive.
Domo Kun Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Haze demo this tuesday! Other stuff too- http://kotaku.com/386818/next-week-europe-gets-a-proper-ps-store-update
Columnar Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 I think my PS3 is ill:( Ever since I updated to 2.30 my PS3 has been getting really hot really quickly. The big main fan used to only come on during certain games or if I'd been playing for hours but now it comes on after 10-20 minutes of turning it on and I'm getting a bit worried. The fan is super noisy - that loud I have to turn my TV right up to hear the game and the air coming out is red hot but the actual BD is quite cool. Does anyone else know why this might be happening? I have it standing vertically with I think, plenty of space for ventilation. I've already had a 360 red-ring on me hence the PS3 so I'd scream if my PS3 melted as well! Any help/suggestions/advice would be great.
