Dante Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 July is typically one of the slower months for the video game industry, falling between June and the related Father's Day and graduation gift occasions, and before Madden month. Despite the summer slowdown, the industry still realized nearly $1 billion in sales for the month, and year-to-date is up nearly 43% from the same time period in 2006. At this pace, the industry is on track to ring up $16-$18B for the year. The NPD Group released videogame hardware and software sales data for July and, yet again, Nintendo dominated the charts. Amazingly, Wii and DS together outsold final figures for PlayStation 2, PSP, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 combined. Nintendo's two systems have held the number one and two top slots in the hardware sales charts for nine months running. For the first time since its launch, Wii outsold consistent performer DS. Nintendo's home console was the best-selling hardware in July with approximately 425,000 units moved. DS trailed close behind with 405,000 sales. Surprisingly, Sony's last-generation system, PlayStation 2, was the third best-seller, amassing about 221,000 in sales. PSP sales were at a solid 213,000. Xbox 360 sales were lower than expected at about 169,000 units. However, even with a semi-price drop, PlayStation 3 could not quite topple Microsoft's numbers. Sony's Blu-ray-equipped console managed only 158,000 in sales - about 50,000 more than it has in previous months, but still not enough to pose a serious threat to Microsoft. On the software side, the best-selling game in July was NCAA Football 08 for Xbox 360 with nearly 400,000 units. The title was followed by the PS2 Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s with 339,000 in sales. Wii Play rounded out the top three with about 280,000 sold. NCAA Football for PS2 amassed 235,000 in sales and Mario PARTY 8 completed the top five with 177,000 in sales. Also notable on the Wii front is that Mario Strikers Charged debuted in the month with more than 100,000 in sales and Resident Evil 4 pulled in another 90,000 or so gamers. The survival-horror port has sold upward of 250,000 units since its release in America. Slaggis Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Awesome sales for the Wii/DS. The higher PS3 sales are because of the whole price cut/not being made any more one I would have thought. I've forgotten which hard drive side edition it is though.
Zechs Merquise Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Awesome stuff, The PS3 has a major price drop and clears the 60gb model and still gets outsold by both Wii and the 360, hey, at least it managed to beat the GBA! With Halo, Bioshock, Mario and Metroid up soon it's gonna be a major boost in sales for Wii and 360. And what does the PS3 have up it's sleave? Oh Heavenly Sword lololololol Haevenly Sword, one of the PS3's AAA system sellers lol talk about beauty only being skin-deep: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/815/815031p1.html
Zelda_Rulez Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 So the PS3 still didn't outsell the 360. I expected that would happen, so this isn't good news for Sony. The Wii still going strong is no surprise, when will third-party developers finally take notice.
dannbrownn Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Right then, lets look at what happened this month. The PS3 price cut was in full swing, there were probably a few people who were holding back to see if the price would drop until they got one, that might explain some of the sales increase, However the 360 sales also rose which also takes the shine away from the PS3 sales increase, because Microsoft did not have to lower the price to achieve this. How will the sales look next month, dannbrownns list of 'things to have a little ponder over!' The PS3 had a price cut and still failed to outsell the 360 August's figures will be the first cut price 360 versus cut price PS3 month, if Sony couldn't fight the full price 360 what hope have they got for victory after the price cut? August is looking set to be another 'Killer App-less' month for the PS3... ... However i think that there is a game coming out on the 360 that will be popular... I think it is called Halo 3... ...How many people may or may not be waiting for that to come out to get a 360, also how many people will have been waiting for a 360 price drop, who knows, I certainly would not want to be working as a spin doctor for sony right now... or for the next 2 or 3 months! Nintendo, you are awesome, i am sorry that i did not believe the wii would be this much of a success, but you know i have always loved, supported and defended you right?
raven_blade2006 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Those sales are simply stunning. I hope Wii and DS continue to perform at this level and surpass all expectations. Third parties cannot be slack with their offerings any more. Wii and DS need all the top quality games from them.

A solid analysis, and one that should make Sony very worried indeed. If it's been tough for them so far, it's only going to get tougher...
Goron_3 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Just wait until Mario Galaxy comes out and then Smash; sales are going to go up to around 700,000 a month!
Pit-Jr Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Congratulations Nintendo! Now run along and spend some of that dough on spectacular software. Buy it from others if you must!
The Lillster Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 It's all wel and good that the Wii is doing as well as it it. But if most of the games just end up being ports and mini games fiascos, then it doesn't really matter. And funny enough, I still want a PS3. Just because a console isn't good in terms of systems sold, it won't stop it from being awesome. I learnt that lesson with the Gamecube and the N64 before it. And well done to Nintendo.
Niji Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Well done Nintendo, Thank fuck I was right in buying shares of you, otherwise I would have no reason to care.

My brother insists on one.

The first 'AAA' PS3 titles are Metal Gear and games like Killzone; not Lair and Heavenly sword. The latter games however are still solid games despite underwhelming reviews. If you look at heavenly sword, people for months have been saying it's a game with great graphics with repetive gameplay, and that's what the final game has shown. No one really has been saying 'omg when Heavenly sword comes out Wii is DOOMED!!!'. Granted, it's taking a while for the PS3's big hitters to come out (MGS4, Killzone, LBP and i'm sure there are lots of others), but atleast they're not doing what Nintendo did last generation and rushing games out due to poor console sales (mainly Mario and Wind Waker i'm referring to). Also, did you like the GC? Because that's like the ps3; bad sales but we all know by the end of it's lifespan it'll have great games.
Gizmo Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 You say some truly fanboy-ish things. I'm hardly Sony's greatest fan, and I have no intention of buying a PS3, but I have to agree with this:blank:

People have been billing both Lair and Heavenly Sword as system selling titles. People on this board have said that when games like that come out PS3 sales will increase. People over on blogs and sites like 1UP have compared those titles to Wii games - and knocked the Wii games for apparently not living up to those titles. Now these games are coming out to less than steller reviews, the gameplay is well under par and these games have nothing to show but flashy graphics. I have praised games on the 360 and have knocked releases on the Wii for not being up to scratch. At first I was a critic of the Wii - until I played one. But equally you can see what is happening times are going to only get tougher for the PS3, especially with big releases like this being poor. What's more when I first came on these boards I was criticsed for saying that graphics mattered and Wii developers should try harder. People said "no" it's the gameplay that counts. I still disagree, a game is a product, a package and needs everything: graphics, audio, presentation, gameplay and of course a lasting challenge. Developers shouldn't skimp on any of those things. However we're now faced with a different beast - PS3 games that are raved about before they've even hit the reviewers desks simply because thay look great. Previews that glow with enthusiasm for the latest PS3 blockbuster without saying a single word about anything other than the 'magnificent smoke effects' or the 'wonderful dynamic lighting'. As I said about certain Wii games, games are a package - and it seems to me that the PS3 games may have great presentation and graphics but when it comes to the gameplay they're falling well short of the mark. And whilst PS3 fans have criticsed the Wii's spectacular sales as being simply a symptom of what they see as a 'new and gimmicky control scheme', the PS3 marketing machine has little to crow about other than pretty graphics.

But surely the gameplay in PS3 games is fine because it's what we've been seeing for years? And remember Red Steel? Everyone got hyped for that and it didn't deliver; it's the big franchises like SMG and Smash that will sell the system, and similarly with PS3. And about the PS3's sales...if the console cost the same as the WIi it would be selling shitloads. Fact.
Slaggis Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 And about the PS3's sales...if the console cost the same as the WIi it would be selling shitloads. Fact. Very true, but there's not really a point in bringing that up as an argument, seeing as it will never happen. See what I mean?

Gameplay must advance as well as graphics. And the Heavenly Sword and Lair wouldn't even have been talked about if it wasn't for the graphics. That is their main selling point. As for PS3 sales, you can speculate it would sell shit loads if it was the same price as the Wii, but it isn't. It's like saying 42 inch screens would sell more than 28 inch screens if they were the same price. They aren't so it doesn't matter. The PS3 isn't selling well, and trying to bring up how it would sell if it was a different price is pointless, demand increases with a price decrease - end of. And although price cuts do help sales, it's still no guarentee of success - it's just had a price cut in the US and it's still being outsold by everything up the GBA!!!

I know what you mean (i used to be a fanboy myself) and I'm not a big fan of the PS3, HOWEVER you can't judge a console until it's 'best' games are out. Everyone said the Wii wasn't that great but once games like Metroid and Mario come out i'm sure it'll shut some people up, and the same can be said about the PS3. I understand what you mean about the gameplay but SURELY with your logic about gameplay needing to change, Metal Gear Solid 4 won't be that great? And so won't the other PS3 big hitters? I agree that motion control is great, but you can't claim the ps3 isn't a great console because it doesn't have a massive gameplay change, seeing as most hardcore gamers would prefer the PS3/360 tbh.
dannbrownn Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 But surely the gameplay in PS3 games is fine because it's what we've been seeing for years? And remember Red Steel? And about the PS3's sales...if the console cost the same as the WIi it would be selling shitloads. Fact. So because it is the same gameplay that you have been seeing for years that makes it ok? Surely you have just 'got used' to the way you play games. If gameplay is as good as it can be already and now graphics are starting to reach a limit where is the industry meant to go? You can't just play the same games forever, can you? I worry that it might get a little bit boring! I must also say, what the hell is your comment on ps3 sales if it was the same price as the wii all about? If it was the same price as the wii then everybody would be buying a ps3 instead of a 360 and third parties would be throwing all their support behind the PS3 and Wii... ...But if Sony had created it to retail at that price then it wouldn't be filled with cell proccessors and bluray drives and 60gb hard drives and the like, it would be a completely different machine.
