Dan_Dare Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Godfucking dammit, internet, stop crashing my means of reading comics please.
ReZourceman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Shadowland starts tomorrow TBH. Still no sign of Wolf-Man on previews for next week. Pretty fucking lackluster and disappointing schedule for its super explosive conclusion. Considering issue 25 is extra big I dread to think when we might get it.
Paj! Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 What's the bag with Shadowland again? Is it just an event for all the street peeps?
Dan_Dare Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Pretty much. If you read The List:Daredevil and go forward in DD from there, you'll be in the right spot to read it. basically, DD has taken over The Hand and, in order to wield them for good, kicked the (corrupt) police and H.A.M.M.E.R out of Hell's Kitchen. He's declared Martial Law and Shadowland is his HQ. The event is all the street level heroes taking him on.
Paj! Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 (edited) Ok, I'll get on that. Whereabouts (number-wise) should I hop onto DD from The List? 500? Edited July 6, 2010 by Paj!
Dan_Dare Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 501 by my record. It's a really good book. Art is stun, too.
gmac Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 If I remember right The List came between 500 and 501 Thanks to Independence day we get our comics before the Americans this week! and sorted my comic collection out a bit, turns out I have a hell of a lot more comics than I thought
Paj! Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I want to win an Amazon shopping spree. There's too much I need.
Ashley Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Apparent (could be fake) costume designs for Whedon's planned-but-cancelled Wonder Woman film: From Topless Robot who amusingly started the article with this: Remember when Joss Whedon was hired to direct a live-action Wonder Woman for Warner Bros., only to have the project somehow canceled by Fox even though they had no involvement whatsoever? (Figured I'd post it here rather than Movie News as its not really news as it got canned and...yeah)
Paj! Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 They're rubbish. Except maybe the third one, if they sorted out her trousers? (What's poking out of them? Yellow pants?) For a potential movie, they should just have the Battle Armour (most famously from Kingdom Come, but used by Hippolyta against Imperiex too IIRC) as a main/most seen costume, which a slightly redesigned classic costume to be "under" that, or seen when she isn't in battle. Or just redesign it so her usual costume elements are visible on the armour. One thing that makes the whole thing look silly (in her famous costume) is the american flag motif, since it makes little sense nowadays. I heard Gail Simone wrote into her run explanations that the symbols are greek in origin, and that america took them or something, but yeah. Her costume is a product of WWII, and the excuse of "Wearing the colours of the country I protect!" seems silly. But then I doubt DC would want to play down the iconic flag costume, they've alreeady been accused of being unpatriotic by toning that all down in her new costume in the comics.

Did you hear about how FOX news were upset that her costume changes because she wasn't patriotic anymore? :p Here is a good example of costume that you were talking about: Edited July 7, 2010 by Dante
Paj! Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Yeah, that was the article I meant. So stupid. I just think the armour gets rid of the "silliness" of her costume IRL. I think they could have a more gladitorial version of it (with dulled colours or something) for her to wear normally, but armour would be best IMO. HOWEVER that would cause people to be like "WTF SHE DOESN'T NEED ARMOUR SHE'S AS STRONG AND DURABLE AS ANY MALE HERO (feminists/technically a good point) / WTF SHE'S NOT SEXY (everyone else :p )".
Ashley Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Yeah its a catch 22. Her traditional costume is seen as antiquated now (although if you read the TR comments this is argued and some say "a proud Amazonian woman wouldn't care what the fuck you thought about her outfit and would then kick you in the nuts") and a bit sexist but on the other hand it would cause an uproar to change/sex sells.
Dan_Dare Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I think her old costume is awful. The torso isn't too bad but she's traditionally drawn with massive hooters so it looks pornographic- the panties look absurd, though, and have no place in 2010. I really like alot of the new outfit, although the jacket is well 90s- she looks a bit like Rogue. The rest is wicked.
Ashley Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Arguably the costume does have a place in contemporary society depending on how you sit on the fence (reappropriating femininity/reverting the male gaze etc etc). (okay it was about 10 years ago but I saw the episode yesterday so...whatever :p)
Dan_Dare Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Usually comes down to how it's drawn though. Alex Ross makes her look powerful and athletic while lesser artists have far less respect for women and draw her like a stripper. Speaking of Ross- you all seen this? Great stuff. I don't like the finish on Iron Man being so glossy (always pictured the metal as a mat finish) but the rest is ace. I like how it reflects the character and composition of his famous JLA piece.
Paj! Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I like the classic Wonder Woman costume for the reasons Ashley mentions (i.e Why cover up, can show her power etc. etc.). When it's drawn with a thong for the pants it undermines it all though. This is how I imagine her in my head. (By Alex Ross, who Dan mentioned) As opposed to shite like; R.I.P Michael Turner and all that, but his art is horrible. I've mentioned his horrid Supergirl here before. --- While I'm away I can't read any new comics, so no spoiling PLZ.

Paj! Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I can't read what is said on that image so I have no idea what you're talking about.
Dan_Dare Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 So! Who's read Scarlett? #1 blew my socks off a little. Best opening page this year? Certainly best narration trick. Maleev stuns as per. Great start to proceedings.
ReZourceman Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 *Reads* Yeah that was awesome. Probably the most realistic dialogue of Bendis' that I've read.x First page wasn't as good as you said though. :p
Dante Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) I can't read what is said on that image so I have no idea what you're talking about. Opps, added information to my post. Edit: There are some characters that connect so strongly with readers that they take on a life of their own, becoming more than just ink on a page. Like modern fables and folklore, comics create strange and exciting worlds and landscapes for readers to visit and experience, and they populate these worlds with characters so well-defined, it’s as if we’d known them forever. Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN is one such work. An epic, 75-issue opus that was both genre-bending and trend-setting during its original release and to this day, it, like WATCHMEN and a number of series, is what many point to when discussing comics as high art. It’s not a stretch to call it a masterpiece. But why are we talking about SANDMAN on the DCU blog, you ask? For those unfamiliar with the character at the center of the cover – and shame on you if you don’t know who that is – that’s Death, sister to Dream of the Endless and one of the most enduring characters introduced during Gaiman’s 75-issue SANDMAN series. Beautifully presented by ACTION COMICS cover artist David Finch, the cover begs the question – what is Death doing in ACTION COMICS? Though the worlds of the Sandman and the DC superheroes have bled into one another from time to time, ACTION COMICS #894 marks a unique moment for not only Death, but the star of ACTION – Lex Luthor. Luthor, as fans of the series know, is in the midst of a storyline that takes him on a winding and dangerous quest for power – a quest that will bring the megalomaniacal villain into close proximity with characters in and beyond the far reaches of the DC Universe. We touched base with writer Paul Cornell who, along with artist Pete Woods, are the team entrusted with the task of chronicling this special issue. Take it away, Paul: “Death appearing in Action Comics was my own mad idea, the extreme case of putting Luthor up against characters he’s not used to dealing with. “I’m very pleased that, after I ran the idea by him, Neil Gaiman approved me using Death in this issue. He’s been very supportive. It’s so interesting to see her back in the DC Universe. Though Vertigo readers can rest assured that the character, and the way she’s used, will be true to the spirit of what has gone before.” ACTION COMICS #894 hits in October. So! Who's read Scarlett? #1 blew my socks off a little. Best opening page this year? Certainly best narration trick. Maleev stuns as per. Great start to proceedings. So Marvel and DC comics on 3DS? Edited July 8, 2010 by Dante Automerged Doublepost
ReZourceman Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 First time for Nintendo to appear at Comic-Con. So Marvel and DC comics on 3DS? Possibly not, as game companies do go to Comic Con...but....that prospect is pretty sick.
