Slaggis Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 You're generalising the market too much. People won't write off the Wii for not having HD output for the simple reason that they don't know what HD is. People buy flat TVs, they buy LCD TVs, but they don't buy HDTVs or 1080p TVs. A Wii can still play on an HDTV and people will choose what they like - they buy the games for the fun factor. The Wii will keep the upper hand in that, and that won't change as HD penetration rises. Same goes for the PSP <> DS battle, people don't care for the media player functions as much as they do for the fun. The fun is the reason they play games. The Wii probably has a longer life in it than the other two, if you ask me. It's concept goes beyond the state of computing technology. I completely agree.
Caris Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Ok then why did everyone who clearly prefer Sony and Microsoft's consoles come into a thread announcing a Wii sales milestone and start pushing the PS3 with comments like 'PEOPLE WILL BUY IT BECAUSE IT HAS BLURAY'. The news has nothing to do with Sony, get over it. Because people were saying stuff about the PS3 that was uncalled for and is blatant fanboyism. Thats why, Get over it. Oh and Haggis the basic story is Blu ray is outselling on both fronts, Get over it. And at Zechs Merquise WHAT DON'T YOU GET ABOUT EXCLUSIVE? All you have been saying all thread is how games which are PS3 only will go onto different formats, just becuase 2 or 3 games have lost the PS3 only tag doesn't mean every game will you know, Get over it.

No, I won't "get over it". I was just trying to give you some facts but for some reason you're throwing them back in my face. Bluray is selling more disks. HD-DVD is selling more players. That's the "basic" story. I don't know why this topic has gone waaaaay of course.
Caris Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Well your "facts" are wrong. I've been following this war very closely since about April and i can promise you Blu ray is beating in players as well. I'm not saying what i want to hear, i'm saying the facts. And the reason this has went way of course is becuase people need to learn the phrase "credit, where credit is due" no one on this forums gives Sony credit for anything when half the time it's due weather you like the Playstation or not. It would be nice for a Nintendo fan to say "thats pretty cool that" or "I've got to admit that game looks stunning on the PS3" for once. Instead of just posting bad news and bringing up there poor E3 all the time. The wii ain't my cup of tea hense i sold mine, but i will openly say i like somestuff about it like the look of the machine, it's sexy as hell. And credit to Nintendo for what there doing cause there racking the cash in. Not hard is it?

And credit to Nintendo for what there doing cause there racking the cash in. Not hard is it? I know what you mean about the whole PS3/Wii/360 argument or whatever, but with the bluray/hddvd. I am right! (lol that sounds overly cocky) Dedicated HD-DVD players are and have been for a while outselling their Blu-ray counterparts. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/119634/hd-dvd-outselling-bluray-by-threetoone.html http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/high-definition/news/hd-dvd-players-thrashing-blu-ray-in-the-us?articleid=874044456 http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070418-dedicated-hd-dvd-players-outsell-blu-ray-counterparts.html One story from april, one from june and one from july all stating the HD-DVD players are outselling Bluray Players. Though as I said they don't count either the xbox 360 HDDVD drive pr the PS3 sales, which won't account fro one side winning the "war" when It comes to that. Standalone players will as many companies have stated. If you look at the disk side of sales, blueray is usually on top with titles such as casino royale.
Caris Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 My sources have been counting PS3 sales and Xbox360 HD-DVD add ons. I don't really see why they shouldn't count.
Slaggis Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 My sources have been counting PS3 sales and Xbox360 HD-DVD add ons. I don't really see why they shouldn't count. Because the general person looking for a player won't buy a PS3. The PS3 is being bought mostly by gamers with the Blu-ray being looked at like an extra. Do you see what I'm getting at? The PS3 isn't bought specifically to play movies, its for games. Also, seeing as blu-ray is intergrated into it, its not really fair counting in when many people won't bother using that feature of the PS3 (for playing movies), they want it for games etc.
Caris Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 That's the thing it isn't like that. Blu ray makes PS3 | PS3 makes Blu ray. That's how it works, and the PS3 is one of the best blu ray players and the cheapest, search the net tons and tons of people have bought a PS3 just for blu ray. theres no point in paying £800 for a blu ray player if you can get a better one for £400 which does games as well.
AshMat Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Because people were saying stuff about the PS3 that was uncalled for and is blatant fanboyism. Thats why, Get over it. I have to agree with Caris, like i have been doing the whole time. Though i want to clear something, i don't think the Wii is shit, i just feel that FOR ME, there aren't that many outstanding titles. Sure you can list all these games you like, but tbh none appealed that much to me, but this is then where i have to see your side, as the Ps3 exclusives that are enticing me, don't entice you as much. So fair enough, that's a 2-way street, i don't like some of the Wiis exclusives, you don't like the ps3s. BUT, it's the people (Zechs especially) saying the ps3 will enver have a sales pickup. Come on man. I think Jasper made a very good point on the previous page about the Ps3s sales picking up.
DCK Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 The reasons stated by Jasper only apply to some audiovisual freaks, not the general market. The PS3 at this price has nothing going for it for the general public, hence the poor sales. Metal Gear Solid 4 and the likes will not change that.

You can barely get one at this price anymore thanks to in store price drops. When it's cheaper people will buy the console.

Slaggis Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Mate, theres no point. There's been like 5 pages of arguing and people still don't get it. I don't think anyone ever said it won't sell when the price gets lower (which it will sooner or later when sony can get off there arse and realise thats why its not selling that wonderfully). I am going to get one, when the price is lower, because I want ratchet and clank, but like many people I won't spend 400 quid on a game console, even if it can play blu-ray movies.
DCK Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Sony announced a 'constant price strategy' for both the PSP and PS3 some time ago, and since they are still reported to make losses on every PS3 sold, it's not going to go down soon. Even if the price goes down, it will still cost an awful lot of money. Add to that that Microsoft has a rather aggressive pricing strategy and that Nintendo has a big margin on the Wii, I don't see much potential in Sony's pricing strategy. Anyway, I said at this price. I'm sure it'd sell more if it was cheaper. I know it's hard to get Caris, but consoles don't sell just because they're awesome. PS3 is turning out into a fine piece of entertainment, but it just isn't enough.

Yeah it's not as simple as that, people will be thinking "hmm well buy the time i get a 360 and a game and get the wireless adaptor i mase well just get a PS3, it's only a bit more" And the reason it's not selling as well as the other 2 is not only the price, it's more down to the lack of software on the system. btw you guys do realise the rough sales figures are about for every 2 people that buy a 360 1 buys a PS3 right? That inst that bad for a console at that price. It's not like it's not selling at all, you might get that in your heads becuase of all the anti Sony fanboys around the net, and well in this thread.

Yes, its the software too. But the price is one of the main things. Not many people want to spend that much on a games machine. I would buy one, If I could, but I can;t afford one. That's why the Wii is so popular. Its cheap and it offers something very new to the average consumer. I think when the PS3 finally gets some great software and lowers the price a bit, it will sell well, but I don't think it will sell as much as the Wii will because it just doesn't appeal to that huge audience the Wii does. I think the PS3 will, in the end, outsell the 360 though.
Caris Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I think the PS3 will come last, but i do think this gen will be very close so that doesn't say a whole lot.
Hero-of-Time Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Once the big games arrive and the price drops I think the PS3 will secure 2nd place especially with the Japanese developers behind it. I have all 3 consoles and all offer great gaming experiences. If theres 1 game that will sell the PS3 in Japan its Monster Hunter 3, methinks Capcom may put it on the 360 aswell though

Sony seems to have lost their dominance of the 110+ million PS2s sold in one striking blow, and it's all due to themselves. It is very disappointing. We mustn't pretend it's selling nothing, you're right, but compared to pretty much everything in the industry it's abysimal. I think it gets a bit better from this point on, they seemed to have hit a low point (only 710k PS3s sold in Q1), but things need to get a lot better for them if the PS3 is to live up to the Playstation brand status.

ShadowV7 Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Wow talk about some debates here Yea the PS3 hasn't exactly done well so far but aren't most consoles off for a slow start? Now i'm not planning on getting a PS3 but I may in the future if there's a price drop.In the near future the PS3 will do better and I do think it will do well when the AAA titles come out like DMC 4,MGS 4,FF etc. Thing is,people can say the Wii has alot of exclusives and support just now but you have to admit, they're not all the best and some are just ports with the Wii controls (though some are amazing such as R4).Good thing is about the PS3 is that 3rd parties are giving quality exclusives which is what the Wii needs aswell(though we have some in the making like FF : CC),some good quality games from 3rd parties and once they're out, sales will start to rise but i'm not getting one just now because there aren't much games that interest me,and the price tag is another factor. Once there is a price drop and the PS3 has these games behind it,it will do well.I'm not trying to diss the Wii or anything and make Sony look good,I love the very much and will likely prefer the most out of this generation but the PS3 has a lot going for it aswell.I really think this gen will be close.
Hero-of-Time Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 i would of thought final fantasy not monster hunter MH is a huge success over there so much so its getting its own shop in Japan just like the Pokemon ones. Its a shame not many western gamers liked it as it is an awesome series. I must have spent easily 1000 hours on the PSP & PS2 versions.
