Alright, guys, I've had a few red letters from British Gas, but I've been having a few problems and have only just back to Brighton, but now I just found this letter.

"Dear the Occupier

We have written to you 3 times and have still not receivd full payment of the above amount and are now arranging to take legal action against you. If we have to write to you again, we will charge you a further £14.00 for the ongoing debt recovery costs. Call us immediately to avoid this, and the following action...

We will visit your property on or after 7 May 2007 to disconnect your gas supply and will charge you £50.00 for this visit."

Ok, I've rang up but they were busy. It says the call centre is open til 8, but I can't get thru. But, I did manage to pay it off on an automated line with my debit card. But they said it will take maybe 3 working days to process it, and the date they sent this letter is the 11th April (dunno why it's only just got here)

I should be ok, right? I mean, I've paid them now. Fuck.

No, thats the additional charge they'll force on me if I don't reply. :heh:

So really they charge £14 for a letter? I thought that was illegal like those bank charges?

Im sure you'll be fine, youve got ages to sort it untill they come anyway.

So is that date they've given basically just "square up before this date, or we'll be knocking on your door"?

Well i'd assume so, they can't really cut you off if you've payed it.

We've had this problem recently, with the red letters...their call centre is in Nowhere, India...and there is a serious mismanagement going on, miscommunication between different departments...it's almost as if the Letter People do not talk to the Customer Relations people. We switched.

I hope so, dude. Hmm.

I just checked the date on the last red letter and this final warning, and its the 3rd and 11th April respectively. So, 8 days apart, which means I should be getting another letter sent from the 19th. So, I hope my transaction has been finalised or something...they said it would take up to 3 working days.

Give them a ring in the morning to put you mind at rest and also get them to send you a letter confirming that you have paid the bill so everything is all above board.

The "3 working days" bit may just be them covering themselves. It might have gone through by the morning.

I'm sure you'll be fine. I mean it isn't like you can pay them any quicker than you have, is it? And if it doesn't go through quick enough for their liking then, well, it's both their fault and problem.

Sounds like it says if you pay them(well, call them immediately), they won't send another letter and charge you £14 OR disconnect your gas, so if you've paid up then that should at least delay anything and keep you safe, cos they shouldn't have to write to you again nor disconnect you, as they have their money, but it'd be worth trying to keep calling to get through to an actual person who can confirm all that for you, in case someone doesn't talk to someone and they don't realise you've paid.

OMG! SHOCKER! I actually got through to British Gas. Granted, I had to wait ten mins or so, but I got through.

They said everything should be fine. Apparantly my outstanding figure is now zero, meaning that I don't owe them money. W000, I can still have hot showers. :)

Glad to hear its all worked out, though you should get an electric shower because then you don't have to worry in these situations :P

(well, not beyond the whole cold showers thing, there would be the bigger issue of lack of gas and boiler etc)
