Seriously, why is he so cryptic towards the end? Other developers are open and like to talk about their ambitions and what they think of other platforms, he seemed a bit stuck up.

The lack of "hype" for this game is depressing... :(

The Wii software library is at the moment full of mediocre games, shoddy PS2/PSP ports, and lame spin-offs of series whose "real" games are getting released on other consoles, and it's a bit depressing when original games made exclusively for the Wii that try out something different get low sales and an all around lack of interest, such as Elebits/Eledees, Dewy's Adventure, Zack & Wiki: Quest For Barbaros' Treasure, and now Opoona.

With the release date less than a month away, there's not even one new post about this game? :shakehead

Personally Opoona is one of my "most wanted" games of the year (the others being Flower, Sun and Rain (DS), Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS), White Gold (PC), Yakuza 2 (PS2), Mega Man 9 (Wiiware, 360, PS3) and, if it actually gets a 2008 release in Europe, Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii)). Even though I currently have a significant backlog of games, this is one game I'll surely buy on day one (it's already pre-ordered).

I was wondering: who else is planning to get the game?

For those not already aware of the game, here's a trailer that will hopefully raise some interest:

Hero-of-Time said in another thread that he's getting it. Initially I was up for it too, but with the lacklustre reviews I've lost interest. I won't be getting Opoona on release, but who knows, if you guys post up some positive stuff then I could be swayed! :)

I will probably be picking this up although , like darksnowman , some of the reviews it has been receiving are a little off-putting.

That being said , I usually enjoy these quirky , off the wall , less high profile releases (one of the very few that really enjoyed Dewys) and there doesn't seem much else on the immediate horizon worth looking at so this will probably get a shot.

Yeah, Piggy, I like the quirk too- mainly the reason I have been tracking Opoona's progress! I like the style of Opoona, but the main thing that has dampened my need for it is that some reviews have pretty much just said the game is boring. :(

Frankly, nowadays I don't care about reviews at all. More and more they never seem to reflect in the slightest my views or tastes. If I did, I would probably only play sports titles and FPS sequels, and most of them pretty much read like publicity adverts. Take GTA4, for example. The number of 10's and A's the game received was quite numerous. For me, after an afternoon of gaming in which I was bored senseless, I put it on my shelf and I'm yet to pick it up again. In the meantime one of my favorite games in the past years is the DS game Contact, which received quite a significant amount of 5's and 6's.

If you notice as the gaming industry grows the media covering it seems to be more and more less tolerant to games with lesser budgets and production values that stray away from the "norm". A glitch/bad looking texture? The game sucks.

Look at most of the high scores this year, and besides Braid which games didn't have a strong brand and actor "x" voicing character "x" and whatnot?

But I digress...

Here's a positive review I found, to balance out a bit all the mediocre reviews the game's been receiving:

Yeah, reviews aren't the be all and end all, but they are still important and can't be completely discounted from the equation. From previews I got the impression that alot of journalists were giving Opoona the best chance to shine they could because the previews were by and large very positive. Its just when it came to reviewing, the full game was found lacking- and not just because of the graphics. :(

Bit of a bump , seeing as this is released tomorrow.

My copy has just dropped through the letterbox , so I will try to post some impressions a little later for those few :p that may be interested.

Let us know your impressions.

And for those interested, the game is selling for £24.98 on Dvd.co.uk. Not a bad price for a new release.

My copy still hasn't shipped, but I must admit this is one of my most wanted Wii games ever since it was announced. I really want to play it, I just hope I have time to properly play it...

Only had time for an hour odd so far so these are very early opinions that could change.

I haven't ventured into the outside world yet (thats my next task) so I have only really had a chance to explore the opening dome.

Firstly , I love the graphical style , it really is charming and suits the game , although it doesn't appear to be displaying in 60Hz. Still looks pretty good though.

The opening dome is very confusing at first and it will take a while to get your bearings , the GPS (map) that you receive is essentially useless , as none of the locations seem to be marked and even within the dome getting around seems confusing. That may improve in time.

The battle system - I am just getting to grips with. Seems like it could be fun , having a few problems getting the bon bon to target the correct foe (and thats even after trying a few of the test simulations) , I am sure that will improve in time also. Part of the problem stems from getting used to the way the controls are set up.

Regarding the controls , seems to be more of a gimmick with them being Nunchuck-centric and it is causing a few problems remembering the correct uses of the 'C' and 'Z' buttons which contributes to the targetting problems. Some of the controls do double up on the Wii-mote though.

Adjusting camera angles is a little awkward , simple enough using the d-pad on the Wiimote but using both 'C' and 'Z' to centre the camera behind Opoona has already lead to the inventary being opened a few times by mistake.

Even at this early stage there appears that there is going to be a wealth of stuff to do and I really can't wait to explore the different jobs/licenses on offer.

The story hasn't really kicked in as such , but I do already get a sense of Opoona's isolation in his situation so it'll be interesting to see how he can establish himself in his new surroundings.

Thanks for your impressions.

I read several comments "complaining" a bit on the controls when the game was released in the US, and it seems playing with the Classic Controller provided a better experience to some people. You may want to give it a try...

I may try that , although the more time I am spending with this the less problems I seem to be having. Typical Wii control situation really.

Played quite a bit more and whilst the game does have some faults (license back-tracking as other stuff as detailed) , it really is beginning to draw me in.

Looks like I am at the point where I can shortly expand on job opportunities and more licenses so the game should open up more.

Enjoying it so far , so thats all that matters.

I had a look in Game, HMV and Woolworths but none seem to be stocking Opoona. I thought they would atleast have it in to begin with, even if they did end up phasing it out due to its probable unpopularity.

That's pretty bad but I suppose not entirely surprising.

I really do recommend picking this up (when you find it) , it is just so damn addictive. This game does deserve some love.

The control issues are subsiding , the later dome layouts are less confusing than the opening one and Opoona is currently inundated with different jobs to tackle and is gradually become a valued Citizen of Landroll.

I did think the difficulty level could have been ramped up , but I am now in an area where I am getting my arse kicked .....grinding time I think.

Unfortunately I still haven't received the game, in fact it only shipped today. I had it pre-ordered from Dvd.co.uk, but they only received their stock yesterday, and today it shipped.

I'm kind of glad: in the meantime the game's price dropped £7, and from the listing on my account page it seems I was charged the updated price... :yay:
