Nintendo and ChartTrack have confirmed to MCV this morning that Wii sold 105,000 units over its opening weekend in the UK - and has become the fastest selling home console in chart history.

It is the first time any console has broken the 100,000 mark over an opening weekend, and with handheld DS shifting around 110,000 in the same week, it tops off a bumper week for platform holder Nintendo.

The new format has trumped previous record-holder Microsoft’s launch weekend with Xbox 360, which saw 70,000 units sold.

While retailers remain hopeful that more stock is forthcoming, it seems Nintendo Wii is already off to a flying start.

Talk about a sweet start!

Meh, now all we need is the UK shipment number to compare how well the Wii sold over all.

It was only to be expected the Wii got this title due to the amount of pre-orders retailers were taking in.

Nintendo arent responsible for retailers. The stock shortages arent NOE's fault (wow, im defending them), obviously they wernt given many so they can fulfill shipments in NOA which they promised to ship 1 million before the end of the year, whilst here we dont know what the entire european shipment number originally was. So therefore im starting to think this shortage was a confusion between retailers.

It is a sweet start no matter who got one or not. They sold 100,000+ and their happy they got their money.

Yeah, and if it hadn't had sold out all we would have heard were complaints that shelves were still full and it hadn't achieved it's potential.

Its all business folks. The initial shipment should be small, along with the fastest selling console status, the hunger for the Wii grows as its all sold out. And when its sold out, people think its amazing and parents start to think 'If I got my kid one, they'd be so happy for christmas/birthday etc'.

While its sold out the advertising gets a boost. Every one wants one, starts registering their interest by pre-ordering the next batch, people say how excited they are to peers and family and they start to get curious.

How many times have you heard about a console selling out? All the time. And you'l notice the company brag about it, like now Nintendo saying they've sold 105,000 which is no doubt close to the entire shipment.

Also, Zechs does have a point too. If there were tons, it'd take up space in stores and if the demand for that certain store is significantly lower than supply, thats one retailer branch saying it hasnt achieved potential.

It is a succesful launch. Im repeating this not because one or two are saying it isnt cause loads of people didnt get one, but many more im expecting to say it.

I've got mine, i don't care if it sells loads or little, as long as i have mine.

QFT, I only care about what games are coming out now, not sales figures. However a part of me is sometimes. If they dont sell well then games wont be coming out on it.

It is a great start, and it's always nice to see something you bought and support doing well.

I didn't get one at launch and I am frustrated, but I wouldn't bitch and moan and say Nintendo failed.

Actaully, i partly take back what i said, i do care if it sells lots or loitles, because if it sells well developers will make better games, and put in better support.

And also you're not laughed at for owning a nintendo... I love my Gamecube but constantly having to defend it was annoying cus you get the comment even if you ignore it.

yeah but people like me need one and cant get one coz theres no diliveries comming in. and its get me frustrated.

Whats that gotta do with Nintendo having a succesful launch?

Also, you dont NEED one. If you feel like you NEED one, just die now. You can live perfectly fine without one, just be patient.

The 360 would had a record breaking launch if the units would have been availible though, but this console has definitely stirred up a lot of new interest.
