I covered why I don't think they can't afford to make a loss. Nintendo isn't a private company, the management has to appease their shareholders. If they start bleeding money like the PS3/360 did this generation their stock price would plummet. Sure they have their reserves but it doesn't make sense to spend more than your yearly revenue when it can be avoided. It's similar reason to why they don't just ignore third parties and create/buyout new studios to make new games, they need to live within their means. Sure spending money in the long term could lead to a big pay day, the 360 is a testament to that, but it's still an undesirable business move to make losses on purpose when it is easily avoidable. Of course Nintendo want to make money, as you said they're a buisness. But as I noted Iwata's buisness philosophy seems to be innovation first. He said 11 years ago that graphics would get much better, nothing like the jump from 2D to 3D. Sure you can argue he was misguided and point out HD gaming but it still clearly shows his philosophy. He seems to believe that going with full out power won't be a successful venture in the long term, It doesn't seem to me a case of "ha ha we can just half ass this new hardware and makes millions" the Gamecube experience has seemed to solidify the view within Nintendo that being successful in the gaming industry requires trying new things and taking a risk. The Wii U is a huge risk, so was Motion controls and the DS. These are things that had never been attempted before, sure you can argue that the Wii U is riding on the back of the Ipad but I think that's just downplaying the issue. I think the situation with Sony is an example of what Nintendo shouldn't do. Like you said their gaming division was a major money maker back in the day. I was reading through their 1999 financials and gaming revenue outstripped the revenue of their electronics division. They became too complacent after the success of the PS1 and the PS2, look at the PSP. They believe they could create a new storage format that people would flock to and this idea was carried on with the PS3 where they expected fans 'to get a second job'. It shows that just going with power won't necessarily create a success, which was a change from the PS1 and PS2 where arguably they weren't the most powerful hardware on the market. The Vita shows that they have completely lost any direction they once had, perhaps it's because Sony is imploding as a whole.

Like I said a couple of pages back, the Wii mini could be a genius idea by Nintendo if they are planning on marketing it in developing countries, Sony sold millions of PS2s in South America this generation. Either way it seems to me that Nintendo are just copying what they did with the NES, SNES, and the GBA where they released downsized versions after they released its successor. I think you're confusing "making money" with Nintendo's company philosophy. Watch Iwata's talk from E3 2001, he was talking about diminishing returns and the need to innovate new games in ways other than adding better graphics and effects. Nintendo left the 'power' race after the Gamecube flopped. I don't see them returning to it either after the success of the Wii and DS. From the various talks Iwata has given he doesn't believe in that path. I don't think they could afford it in the long term either, even with the war chest the DS and Wii accumulated for them. They are a public company, they still need to appease their shareholders which bleeding large amounts of money wouldn't do. They aren't like Sony or Microsoft, they don't have other divisions to boost their revenue. I don't see how they are 'grabbing money with large profit margins' when it's making a loss in the US (Yes I know about the exchange rate + selling one game breaks even) Nintendo can't afford to sell hardware at a massive loss like Sony and Microsoft did at the start of this generation, I don't think Sony will attempt that again to be honest. I don't understand you're whole argument of they made a mint with the 3DS either, they sold that at a loss for almost 8 months. Just because you're not happy with the direction Nintendo is going in doesn't mean they are trying to scam consumers

Wii U Launch Day Buyers: What's your plan of action?
Tamazoid replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in General Gaming Discussion
Yep i'm expecting my first Wii U to brick, Nintendo really dropped the ball with this launch. What is this 2006? . . . . On a serious note do you guys think that there's a possibility that the update will be preloaded on Wii U's for the European and Japanese launches as the US launch was rushed to be out before Black Friday? I guess it depends on if Nintendo decided to begin shipping stock worldwide when they started getting stock out for the US or not. -
I've enjoyed the Gaf outrage at a product that is clearly not targeted at our demographic. If I was Nintendo I'd use this as a base to expand into the emerging markets they've so far ignored. Develop a more comprehensive Nintendo Selects line and market this in regions like China, India and South America, places that the average consumer isn't going to be able to afford a Wii U any time soon.

Still can't believe Level 5 are launching it a month after Animal Crossing. It will be lucky not to bomb

Wii U Launch Day Buyers: What's your plan of action?

Spend '5 hours' updating I guess. . . -
I'd like to see a Cubivore sequel. It might be viable due to the success of Tokyo Jungle and unlike Doshin I believe most of the people that worked on Cubivore are still at Intelligent Systems (They did the programming). Surely Noise is working on something, Custom Robo Wii U could potentially be interesting.

The Dreamcast launched the 6th generation. The Saturn launched the 5th generation. Sony has never been the first to launch a new console generation.

It's time to decide - post your launch game choices!
Tamazoid replied to Aneres11's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I'm leaning towards NSMBU and Sonic All Star Racing at launch on Friday. Might add Tank since I can get it for $40. I'll probably be picking up Batman , Ninja Gaiden 3, Assassins Creed 3 and possibly 007 Legends if it drops in price after Christmas. I'm actually tempted to pick ME 3 even though I haven't played the first two though I'm wary of supporting EA's dodgy practices. On the other hand I'd be supporting an Aussie developer I guess. -
Exactly, this is like "Can't judge Vita before it's first Christmas", pure marketing spin. I don't see how Reggie has lost credibility, it's not like he lied to investors or something illegal along those lines. Do people expect Reggie to give in depth analysis to CNN? He's on there to promote the Wii U to non gamers and a similar demographic to that who purchased the Wii in droves 6 years ago. He's doing his job of marketing spin, that's basically the role of NoA besides distribution.

It's really ironic his username is "Wii" yet he said the Wii U is the first console that has "no games that look next gen". Where were you for the Wii launch? There were original Xbox games that looked better than launch Wii games. You're detraction of the Wii must have been legendary seeing as it wasn't 'next gen'. Please continue you're anti Wii U agenda though, it's quite enjoyable watching you fumble through a debate.

Bad news for Eurocom and probably any faint hope that the Wii U version would be any better than the others. It seems that they've had to downsize to 50 people from their current 200 and are now focusing on mobile games. Only two years after the great Goldeneye Wii too. Activision has killed another decent developer, RIP Eurocom. Nintendo really needs to open a UK studio and snap up some of the talent that is floating around. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-11-23-eurocom-forced-to-make-large-number-of-redundancies?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

I'm liking the art for this one. It's an improvement over the FE12 art.

Wasn't sure if this deserved its own thread but the English translation patch for Fire Emblem 12 has been released. http://www.heroesofshadow.net/

So Red Steel got a 5.5 from Gamespot 6 years ago. Red Steel > ZombiU confirmed.

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-zombiu/17-6810/ Giant Bomb Quick Look. "ZombiU is pretty awesome"
-
No we didn't sadly. I was waiting for it too. We only got 20 64 games I believe.
-
The game has received a 92 from OMN and a poor review from a reviewer who mainly reviews fighting games and people are cancelling their pre orders? I'd wait for more reviews if I were you.

Well Harada did say he was thinking about making this version more 'casual' to suit the "Nintendo userbase" but Nintendo talked him out of it. Namco probably think party style games appeal to people who buy Nintendo consoles. Plus they probably want to differentiate it from the 360/PS3 versions.

Was Nintendo GT in the works for Gamecube?
Tamazoid replied to darkjak's topic in General Gaming Discussion
Looks like just a tech demo, like Meowth's Party and that Mario thing. Only car game I know of that was in development was Retro's vehicular combat game. -
Is it worth getting an original 3DS in a post XL world?
Tamazoid replied to flameboy's topic in General Gaming Discussion
You can do a system reset though you'll lose any e-shop games that are on the system and ambassador titles. I don't think you can just reset streetpass, I may be wrong though. -
Well that ensures that a high rate of inflation shouldn't occur.

It's been getting pretty bad reviews. It's sitting at a 38 metacritic at the moment.

NoA killed them when they killed Project H.A.M.M.E.R it seems . They've only been making Mario vs Donkey Kong since then and I believe a lot of the staff left. They've been rehiring lately so hopefully they are gearing up for Wii U/3DS development.

Probably because they expect to sell it to Japanese Fire Emblem fans who have most likely already played the game. Things like this usually only sell to die hard fans
