  1. Well, I would agree that it's most likely a pisstake, and we can discuss whether that's okay, but is it truly racist? To me it doesn't seem to be targetting his race/colour in particular, merely his general appearance. But is that enough to make it racist, would you say? It's actually an interesting question.

  2.

If he cares so much about the medium and wants to create a quality product, why does he feel the need to do things just for money's sake? Isn't that sacrificing integrity?

My problem with some types of DLC echoes @Grazza's point: A game should be a quality product on its own, well-balanced and refined. I'm not per definition against DLC or additional content, but that's strictly what it should be: additional. When games start to become construction kits that need to be assembled to get the full product, it's bad.

It's also funny that he brings up Valve, because with TF2, for instance, I've always applauded their style; the things you have to spend money on aren't central to the game, and the game-relevant things can be found or got through in-game means.

  3. This! This is exactly what's wrong with modern perception of "racism"; we're fucking afraid of even acknowledging the fact that we look bloody different!

Look, if I'm going to dress up as someone with a different hair colour, I dye my hair or get a wig. The hair is a very distinguishing feature of a character, just like skin tone, and few people see a problem with dying one's hair. So since we have absolutely no problem with that, why is it suddenly a huge problem when it comes to skin tone? Because people are scaredy cats who are terrified of offending others by being politically incorrect, and because race is such a taboo topic that no one dares to go near it; the recently posted video with Samuel L. Jackson springs to mind.

In fact, why aren't these people objecting to tanning? Surely that's also racist, then?

  4. It is and always will be "The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker"

When I got my hands on it, the game was pure magic. I was blown away by the immersive and gorgeous 3D world, the lovely and very lively characters and most of all by the engaging story and the oh so polished gameplay.

Most people consider the game flawed because of speculated missing dungeons, and the triforce quest. To me it felt all right, the game had new challenges that weren't always very conventional, but it also very clearly built on the foundations of Ocarina of Time. The scale and impact of the game was so large, that anything that wasn't perfect just didn't matter anymore. And after all this time, this game still looks and plays perfectly. It is the most acurate example that a game can be developed to be withstand time and mere technical improvements over time. To sum it up I remember it as the perfect adventure I always wanted to experience. To me it is the best game made, and that also happens to make it my favorite.

Amen! A lot of people were bothered by the scale and relative emptiness of the ocean, but to me that just made it all the more epic and mysterious. I always had that feeling of the world being so utterly big and full of the unknown; there were little, strange islands, curious people mumbling about forgotten lore, mysterious events such as a disappearing ghost ship ...

It all fit in very well with the legend of the sunken kingdom and the lacking history of the current world, which in turn held plenty of mysteries of secrets of its own. Since the islands were so far apart, few of the people you met had actually seen much of the world, and that added to the mystery surrounding all the myths and rumours.

Also unlike many, I loved that you had to go on a proper, old treasure hunt for the maps and the sunken pieces of the Triforce. Again, it all played into the forgotten legends of the sunken kingdom, which you then had to rediscover. It was simply brilliant to me.

    Link's movement is slow

Oh, god, yes. Of all the things I remember about ALttP, the horrible experience of controlling Link sits close to the top. :p I absolutely love the Oracle games and The Minish Cap, though; I find those games quite underrated (or at least less known than they ought to be).

As for my own best/favourite games, my avatar and signature (credit goes to the talented Mr Ripley @Eddage!) should give you a clue; the Ace Attorney series has taken a very firm spot as my favourite game series, beating out strong competitors such as The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox. I absolutely love the universe and the characters, and the writing and localisation are superb.

A contender for best game that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Portal 2. It took the ingenious concept of the first game and not only added a bunch of brilliant additions, but also vastly expanded the world and its history through clever storytelling and amazing character development.

  5. Well, that's obvious!

    :D

(And technically, I'm now farther away from the UK than I was before :heh:)

Really? It still looks a bit further away when I look at a map, but then again that's not very exact.

Civil Engineering. My original intention was to make part of my Master's Thesis here, but as things turned out, I'm going to complete some of the courses I left behind, instead. It might be the better option, though, as a thesis done internationally would've been more complicated, and I would've stayed here less time.

Interesting! How does civil engineering differ from "regular" engineering?

  6. I don't remember where I got this from, but apparently Jackson was trying to get the reporter to say nigger because he didn't feel like it was worth discussing a word when you can't even say it.

I think that was the point? That people's fear of saying the word itself is stupid? But I may have misunderstood that.

Yes, by the seventh book, Voldemort got some clever use out of that fear. However, before then, it was just an irrational fear of the word. Even kids feared the word before they understood why they should fear Voldemort.

    This is correct.

What if he tells you to say "what" one more goddamn time? :heh:

You don't! :p That was a dare, though; he didn't actually want him to say it! :heh:

  7. Diddy Kong Racing - Wizpig races. They were evil.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Yeah, I remember those. Actually all the bosses in DKR were quite challenging.

Took me half a day to do the last level in Super Mario Galaxy 2 as well, you know the special comet daredevil one. I've forgotten the name, but those bloody Hammer Bros near the end were a nightmare!

Hm, I'm unsure what level you're referring to?

You'd never have done it if you had to do this.. :heh:

    tumblr_mj4272PTuh1rw70wfo1_500.png

Really impractical, but such a cool idea

Holy ... surely the game would've needed to be made easier if they'd kept that aspect! :o

Getting 117 Shines in Super Mario Sunshine is one, yes. No, I don't care that I used guides to find the remaining blue coins.

Beating every Story Chapter in Very Hard Mode in F-Zero GX is another one. Fucking ace.

Beating the "Good" path in Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume without New Game+. Every hint I got on the internet said it was impossible, but I proved them wrong.

In Tales of Symphonia, beating the entire game, plus Abyssion and Sword Dancer, in Manic difficulty.

I once got 150 and 248 Pokémon in Pokémon Blue and Silver, respectively. True story.

My old record with the Super Sheep in Worms Armaggedon. I was a master with it.

This might sound silly, but finding all the rainbow shards in Kirby's Dream Land 2 was huge when I was a kid. I didn't know any guides, and nobody else at school even realised it was even a thing (even though the game was popular). But I did, so I explored the entire game up and down, found all of them with absolutely no knowledge if something would even happen and WHAM! New Final Boss. And then everyone at school kept asking me where to find the shards. It was awesome.

Damn, you're quite a gaming pro!

  8. Suddenly you're pretty close to the rest of us! :D If you ever feel like taking a detour to Denmark, let me know! ;)

It's pretty cool that you're "suddenly" an exchange student. :) We don't hear so much about your personal life, so it's interesting to get a glimpse of it! What is it that you're studying? :)

  9. Haha, I was actually in the process of making the thread myself, inspired by you! :D

I'll just post the long-ass intro I wrote for my own thread here, then. :heh:

    ---

I occasionally pick up the old N64 controller and return to my childhood, and the game I return to the most is without a doubt GoldenEye 007. Which makes perfect sense, considering you realistically don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of fully completing that game as a child! :p

So throughout my adult years I've been playing through the game on the harder difficulties that I couldn't possibly do as a child, and some years ago I finally completed all missions on the Secret Agent difficulty. The next challenge was the dreaded 00 Agent difficulty, and boy, have I spent many hours on that project!

Originally I only got to Silo, at which point I got stuck and lost interest; I wasn't that seriously into it at that point. Then one day while over at a friend's house, we randomly stuck GoldenEye in the N64 and started playing, and then our completionist drive was sparked! Since then we've returned to the game from time to time and just played it non-stop for hours, taking turns trying to beat the missions on 00 Agent, figuring out strategies and burning them into our muscle memory. While he completed some of the missions and I others, our successes were definitely a combined and shared effort as evident by the fact that whenever I returned home from one of our sessions, I would complete the same missions again myself. It was also quite obvious whenever we played that we were very much on the same level and sharing the experience of our sessions; it was often a matter of coincidence which one of us ended up completing the individual missions.

Last summer we got from Statue to Control, but then we didn't make it any further, and Control has since loomed over our heads, which isn't surprising given that most people agree it's the most dreaded mission in the game. After watching the live-action GoldenEye multiplayer video posted on the forums a couple of days ago, I got in the mood for some GoldenEye and as such picked it up today, not daring to seriously consider completing Control. I gave it a go, of course, and after a couple of tries the completionist drive had naturally emerged; I made decent progress a couple of times, screwed up a lot, and once or twice I actually got pretty close.

    And then I did it.

I fucking completed Control on 00 Agent.

It was such a rush, and I was shaking for at least 15 minutes afterwards while I messaged my friend and bragged my ass off. :heh:

I posted about it in the good stuff thread, but then Retro_Link came up with the great idea of making an actual thread out of it, so here it is! :D (In the end he evidently beat me to it, most likely because I spent so long writing this story!)

What great, personal achievements in gaming have YOU experienced? Are there any victories you remember as particularly exhilarating? Any that gave you a rush Red Bull could only hope to match? Any that left you shaking in a puddle of your own sweat/tears/blood?

    Share your stories here! :)

  10. haha, Never. ;)

Come on, you could have used that post to start a 'Your Greatest Achievements in Gaming' thread, or a new 'Goldeneye memories' thread or something.

More members need to get involved with the gaming boards, and bring new members with them! :p

It's the same problem we faced with the mass thread lock back in the day, I think; people are hesitant to create new threads. I know I certainly am. I never would've thought of creating an entire thread from something like that; the idea would've felt ridiculous to me. It still does a bit, in fact, and that's strange, because it's an amazing idea, and I can't find a fault with it. For some reason there's just a small voice inside my head going: "You can't go around making a thread for every single fucking thing you do." Which is weird, because why not? If there's thread potential, why not make a thread?

The creation process of this post was interesting, because I initially just intended to reply according to that little voice in my head, but the more I thought about it, the more I realised how irrational that voice was. Quite interesting following my own thought processess ...

  11. I think it's a little weird how a link to a website can fuel such a massive discussion here... :)

That's one of the great things about this forum. :)

I agree with Debug Mode. People tend to be offended by words instead of intent. Like here:

Holy shit, I'd have been terrified! If Samuel L. Jackson tells you to say something, you say it! :heh:
