OK, here's the deal. Recent XP problems etcetc, got XP home on there, activated it too, my key worked fine. When I installed XP, I used the installation to basically partition the drive into two equal halves, simply by halving the amount of bytes it said the drive had and I think setting to the nearest multiple of 8, I didn't really know what I was doing. Then we moved house. Hooked up to some old monitor, literally just hooked it up to a brand new cheapy argos ps/2 keyboard and usb mouse. Try to turn it on. Boot priority is set to CD ROM then HD, but I was quick and took the CD out. It gets to the Windows XP with green bar screen, loads a bit then I hear a tick, and the screen goes black. It keeps ticking. I try to restart through the reset button on the computer, I go into the BIOS, change it back to hard drive priority, and it ticks and black screens before it gets to the green loading bar screen. I try to boot the CD(self burnt XP OEM Home Edition) and it gets to a point where it's launching windows or something? After loading all the drivers and stuff down the bottom, but doesn't progress beyond it. Something is still ticking every now and then inside the computer, it seems to happen as a red light on the front of the comp flashes. OK, my question, is the hard drive fucked? It's all I can think is the problem. I'd got one error message about windows not being able to boot for some reason, I think it asked me to insert a disc or something, didn't pay too much attention just reset it. Second question, is there ANY way I can manage to access the hard drive to get a file off of it? I basically put the key I had into a small text file on the computer, I kind of need that if I'm gonna re-install XP again. Third question. I'm sure there was one. Probably me wondering what else it could be, really, if it wasn't the hard drive? Is there an easy way to determine what it is/isn't etcetc? Also, am I breaking it by trying to do anything to it whilst it ticks like this, or should I look at something inside first? EDIT: Remembered my last point. Can I boot into DOS or Command Prompt to get my file? Will I be unable to because windows can't boot? Is there a free and easy alternative, presuming I can at least access some of the drive? -------------------------------- Man I fucking hate the unpredictability of computers! Gah! I kept trying to load it, no luck, remembered I found a ubuntu cd the other day, so I thought I'd try it as a live cd see if it works, it did get into ubuntu, then eventually(with alot of not really knowing what I was doing but just trying what it told me and being confused for a while) I managed to force mount the drives and get to that file I wanted, it said something about $logfile causing a problem that I couldn't mount it easier. So, that's one problem down. I then tried windows again, got the whole 'windows didn't shut down proper choose safe mode, command, network, or start normally' thingy, went for start normally(mind the computer is still making this weird tick/knocking noise every now and then), but the problem now...when I get into Windows(reminds me, I meant blue loading, not green) it tells me something about there isn't enough power to my nVidia graphics card or something but like what I am so confused right there. Then I went to eat a spoonful of rice, as it said it was building some internet explorer preferences or something? Anyway, I was only out the room for 30sec or so but I return, it's restarted itself, does a little checkdisk, then goes into loading windows, and now it just hangs...I left it for a while(longer than it usually takes) but I got fed up waiting and left it alone for today. It seems to be a different problem every fucking time I get anywhere !

Next round, I might go a tiny bit mental, if there's this few of us, and do a...double runaround. I've just stuck two words together and bolded them to make them seem like some fancy official term, but essentially, I'll just run the game through the same people again. THEN I might clear all signups for the next game, and only let new players join, OR old players if they get a new player to join and say that somebody made them join. This game is too awesome, new talent would make it awesomer!

I still think it's that AND the fact it's x-factor and they have assumed an easy win. I imagine people spend alot of time with people in the music business, managers, writers, producers, I'd definitely think so for a christmas no.1 attempt, and maybe some of these people spend MORE time than the judges have with these contestants. What's the difference? Most of the judges are celebrities, plus the fact they weren't expecting this to come and trump all the effort they've put in. God forbid it work anything like the real industry. It's not like they haven't already made a pretty penny out of this whole phenomenon either.

Exactly what I think, if we do nothing, then what will change? Hasn't music always been about progression? For me, my problem is the domination of X-Factor, I know plenty of people who don't like it/don't care for it/don't watch it anymore. I say anymore because I did once, I liked it once, but I'm fed up of it now. I unfortunately know plenty of people who do STILL watch it, but if something like this campagin succeeds, it will hopefully prove a point that might lead to dying a beginning death. I understand how people say RATM aren't christmassy etc, but is X-Factor, is it REALLY? If we can kill X-Factor, it'll give some hope in the future to bringing back the classic style of genuine christmas no.1 battles. I don't like the way X-Factor makes such an easy pop star/singer/musician these days, who can then get to no.1 off the back of the show with little effort, I don't think it's a positive thing for all the other artists who are trying to get off the ground and what not. From what I recall, Simon Cowelll blasted Peter Kay and his Geraldine song last year for making a mockery of the charts and the christmas no.1, but I think X-Factor does that itself(though last year's was at least a christmassy kinda song, it irked me a little that Simon made money from all versions sold). Peter Kay's one also at least all went to charity. He probably didn't like the fact his show totally took the piss out of X-Factor style shows either(which Cowell basically ripped off of Fuller?). My biggest problem is the inevitability of X-Factor being no.1, it's basically a given now. The competition for the christmas number 1 is only ever between a handful of people, and it ends with the X-Factor final. What annoys me as well is how people around the program, like the judges and what not, seem to think the winner deserves to be no1 as well! RATM worked their way to where they are and were I'm sure, they got no free and easy ride through a glorified talent show, if anything that will always deserve to be above anything like X-Factor imo. Anyhow, now I must leave, otherwise this post'd be longer. I think it's made me late for work. Damn forums!

Thursday night I was slightly excited at the snow and the prospect of playing in it especially after someone text me to go play in the snow. I woke up the next day and promptly realised, I might actually think snow is a bit shit.

I'm still completely undecided on this, working saturday eve so I'd have to head up sunday sometime, hopefully not too late if I do, but I honestly don't know if I will, all this house moving jazz is getting on top of me, but we shall see. Pretty pricey still, MS don't do themselves much favours in trying to discourage piracy with that attitude. Though I guess they need the money and progression is money, but it'd be nice if they kept retailing older versions on the cheap, with or without support. I've half solved my problem already anyhow, so I guess this thread is free to die its own death/locked away to never be posted in again, just wanted to thank everyone for their advice! Cheers!

Haha, I did think it a bit too good to be true. Oh well, still doesn't address my issue of the problem of not actually knowing where the cheapest place to get XP is! If I buy a copy second hand, with a proper license key thingy(like the sticker, or whatever comes with a full retail version) but then it later gets decided that my license is invalid(for example if my key is in large usage) where do I stand legally?

So, we've an old computer which is knackered(and it seems, originally had a dodgy XP) and I can't really be arsed getting into the business of trying to get it to work with another key etc, so I'm wondering if anybody knows the cheapest place to get a proper, official copy of XP? Maybe one I could install on two computers(planning to get a new HD for laptop and put it on that too, but that's secondary to purpose) the first computer that needs it is what my dad'll be using, so I definitely need to be able to install it on that one. The cheapest I've found with a quick google, is this place for £34.99, I'm hoping they're genuine and everything too...

I might be able to start the next game by tomorrow or tuesday, but I won't be around to regulate any slackers(tho tbh we don't seem to have many) then I think we get internets at the new place next tuesday sometime, I think. I'll see what I can do, unless as I said anybody else wants to pick it up?
