Just a short rant from me - Cookyman.

Right well I'm 36 and I feel like a right old git with all you young guys on here. I've been playing video games since the 70's, first console if you could call it that was a grandstand which basically let you play pong and various variations of it in glorious black and white with no sound. Then moved on to the Atari VCS and progressed from there.

Please tell me I'm not the oldest on here theres got to be more oldies like me here!

Now I notice a lot of people have been moaning about the price of the Wii but maybe this will put things into perspective heres some consoles I have bought all on launch day.

Megadrive - £189

SNES - (My first introduction to Nintendo but can't remember how much it cost on day of release! lol)

N64 - £250

Gamecube - £129 but would have been happy to pay the higher price as had preordered it at that price and thopught it was a fair price.

Ok the gamecube did arrive at a very competitive price but for your £180 I reckon your getting plenty of bang for your buck with the Wii.

Now I may one of the older guys on here but I still get the buzz of excitement regarding a new console I will be getting mine on launch day and I am counting the days!

As you can imagine I have played many games on various platforms and have come to one definitive conclusion - in my opinion Nintendo really is the platform of choice - they are innovative and like to think out the box and their games are some of the most engrossing, addictive and fun thats why I have yet again chosen to buy Nintendo.

Well written but the thing is that for example PCs have the same price since years but their power increases steadily. I paid for my 17" notebook with a Pentium-M 1700€ now I would get it for less than 1300€ and it is not even a year old (date of purchase).

Now the Gamecube did cost 199€ and was a good piece of hardware - the Wii is going to be sold for 249€ and Nintendo makes profit from it but the step in hardware is less than from the N64 to the Gamecube.

So I would understand if the Wii costs the same as the Gamecube did but certainly I don't understand why it has to be more. I don't think it is expensive at all or something but the price seems to be a bit unfair.

You're absolutely right, but I'm hearing more complaints about the price of an extra controller than the system. Which makes even less sense when you consider the controller most likely contains a lot of sensitive equipment. Expensive sensitive equipment. But you are right on all counts.

I officially endorse this rant.

Yeah I hear what your saying mate but in Nintendo's defence I think gaming in general has become a rather tired affair - The Wii is trying something different and I would go for playability over graphics any day of the week. If more people become interested in gaming because of the Wii interface thats brill news the more the merrier I say!

The Wii's primary concern is entertainment.

If the Wii provokes the escapist emotions that are provoked by games in the way that consoles before has done. It is not only worth the money but has succeeded in it's primary aim.

We have lived in a golden age, it won't get much better. The Wii acknowledges this and says- okay, let's consolidate and bring this golden age to new people.

Nintendo's back catalogue will offer well over 60% (made up guesstimation) of the greatest games ever. That is why it is worth it.

If the Wii makes me laugh, if the Wii makes me smile then I will be happy..

Other people will have other expectations.. to cry, to destroy, to race, to create.

I just want to smile and the Wii and DS are the best to do this.

The last modern game to really make me smile was Jak and Daxter (1) on the PS2, I really think it's all downhill from now on.

I think Nintendo are taking a brave stance this time and I commend them for it.

Dont get me wrong the PS3 is a lovely bit of kit but Sony seems to be trying too hard and as for the motion detection on their controllers - seems like desperation where as Nintendo are known for innovation.

I dunno, if you ask someone who invented the mouse and idea of a graphical user interface they don't know.. if you say who invented the computer they'd say Bill Gates probably.

I don't think Nintendo are known for innovation outside of gaming circles. The fact that Nintendo are marketing themselves as in your face different this generation is a big deal in itself.

Perhaps then people on the streets will associate innovation with Nintendo.

But at the moment Sony has made all the high profile improvements on Nintendo's ideas.

2 shoulder buttons, 2 analogue sticks and putting the word dual in front of shock.

Mario Kart DS makes me grin. :D

In response to the guy who said Wii doesn't appear to have much of a leap over Gamecube in comparison to GC-N64:

First of all, it is still early days. The Wii's GPU isn't being fully exploited, heck, it's not even being pushed when you see all that silky-smooth 60fps action. It may only output SD or 480p progressive scan, but it can still do a hell of a lot.

Secondly, I don't think power should be measured purely in graphic terms. The Wii has cutting-edge technology packed inside it, the most famous being the precise motion sensing. It's got WiiConnect24, and it's able to keep power consumption to an absolutely minimal level.

And of course, advancement can't be measured purely in hardware form. There's the Wii Channels, Virtual Console, and all that stuff. Some of it has already been done in some form, but the way that Nintendo has tied everything into that little white box is certainly unique and different.

I agree the controllers are a bit expensive, but Play.com helps take the sting out of it. :) You'll save £7 on every Wiimote/nunchuck combo.

EDIT: Damn, Play.com removed the discounts from the controllers! At least they're still there on my preorder, I hope they still go through at the lower price. If you didn't preorder while the discount was there... you missed out. :(

Overall, I have been extremely impressed by the sheer level of thought and attention to detail that Nintendo have poured into Wii. That is why I have no hesistation in slapping down £180 for it. It's certainly something truly unique.

Everything is relative. Compare the price of the Wii to the GameCube, and the PS3 and Xbox 360 and we realise we are paying more for the Wii than we would for anything else.

Also realise that Nintendo are making a huge amount of money right now. The other companies are choosing not to do that and that benefits us.

Having said buying a Wii is great value for money when compared with going to the cinema, buying a film and just about anything else. Its also potentially more fun than any other console, and so is well worth the price.

If it lasts until next generation it is good value for money.

£300 for a PS2 that dies 2 years later is not good value for money.

I like to think the Wii will be made better than the 360 (wave after wave of problems) and the PS3 which has Blu-Ray problems.

I must say the price was a big slap in the nuts.

I bought a Mega Drive in 1990 for £189 - now thats more expensive than a Wii and would be a bigger slap in the nuts - had yours even dropped by then? :D

Thats 16 years ago! think that puts things in perspective I think it's a good price. :bouncy:

The controller price is extra annoying when you consider controllers never tend to get cheaper during the lifespan of the console. :weep:

Can someone please tell me why the ps2 was £300 when Gamecube had better hardware and only cost £120?

It came out several years later, remember? :p

I came out about two years later giving time for the technology to get cheaper. There is a general rule that processing power doubles every 18 months or so (i t hink thats right).

The lack of DVD meant they would not have to pay the people who made the DVD format any money too.

DVD Player - £800 (for a good one, and no there are no shit ones on the market)

PS2 - £300.

They can charge what they wanted.. it had a DVD player in it.

Heh. Might want to edit that.

I'm glad I'm not the oldest here. My first console was a binatone. First computer was a Commodore 16. I was 6.

The PS3 controller is not innovative in the slightest, its a Logitech Wingman controller that came out YEARS AGO [anyone thats used and owned one will know what i'm taking about, 6 degrees of movement, same shit] controller in a Dual Shock Controller design.
