Balfron Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 First of all I don't know what the 'Now Playing' field in the 'Post New Thread' page is for! Anyway, Nintendo Go (that is what its called isn't it?) means the Wii will have the potential to always be on. As we know the Wii is a very powerful computer, which for the vast majority of the day will remain unused. Projects such as this one - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/ use dormant PCs to give scientists data they need to do their work. Wouldn't it be nice if Nintendo Go could do this? Is it possible? Are there any plans to do it? If not I will set up a petition. Maybe Nintendo will listen, at the very least it will spread the word and maybe encourage a few PC owners to sign up to projects like the BBC one above. Maybe Wii can save the world! PS Why am I labelled a noob, I've been with this site since this stage with the last console! Edit by Moria: Nintendo Go = WiiConnect24. noob
Gaijin von Snikbah Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Ehm... well... it is a nice idea. But it might be hard turning the Wii into a computer, or a tool for helping the scientist.
Chanser Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Err no. Unless it can run linux or Windows. Which I'm sure homebrew hackers eventually solve.
Tellyn Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 First of all I don't know what the 'Now Playing' field in the 'Post New Thread' page is for! It's to say what game you're playing at the moment, it appears in your profile area for the one post. Anyway, Nintendo Go (that is what its called isn't it?) No, it's simply the Wii, not even Nintendo Wii. Wii will have the potential to always be on. As we know the Wii is a very powerful computer, which for the vast majority of the day will remain unused. Yes, it has a sleep mode and Wii Connect 24. It remains on all of the time searching for updates for games from Nintendo. Although powerful too, the Wii is not uber powerful. Projects such as this one - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/ use dormant PCs to give scientists data they need to do their work. It will work like that but in a pause mode, no information comes from it unless Wii Connect 24 is turned on. Nintendo Go was the name of a mockup created before Nintendo revealed the Wii fully. It wasn't even a codename. Set up a petition, but the Wii has begun manufacturing, so nothing you do can change it. Maybe Wii can save the world! Yep, and defeat Sony in the process. PS Why am I labelled a noob, I've been with this site since this stage with the last console! I think you chose your own gender, you can change it to something else though. And you haven't made any posts since October 2005, so you're still a new member.
demonmike04 Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 wrong! PS3 will cure diseases! WII IS USELESS.

mcj metroid Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 BLASPHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMER! YOU BLASPHEME! BLASPHEMY! tut tut tut do not underestimate the power of playstation
Tellyn Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 I can underestimate, it's the same as a bloody PS2 with better graphics. What's to underestimate?
mcj metroid Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 hahaha i know im just taking the piss. Death to psp and ps3!
Tellyn Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 hahaha i know im just taking the piss.Death to psp and ps3! That's good to know. One of us, one of us... I'm pretty sure demonmike is kidding too. I think. *Draws pitchfork and torch*
demonmike04 Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 No really, as soon as I get cancer im fucking off to sony.
system_error Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 For grid computing the Cell processor is superior in any way to the Nintendo Wii or the XBOX 360. It was designed with server capabilities in mind - so a lot of raw power is available for solving problems in the fields of astronomy, nuclear science, mathematics. In theory the Wii could also support foundation like SETI@Home and use BOINC which can be easily ported. The question is why would anyone do that? Normally those software use the idle time of a computer but with Connect24 the Wii would run all day and all night. So to really help those projects the Wii would have to run best with full speed which means the fan constantly runs. With that use of energy you could save a lot more by turning it OFF!
mcj metroid Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 That's good to know. One of us, one of us... I'm pretty sure demonmike is kidding too. I think. *Draws pitchfork and torch* *joins tellyn888* death to everyone:D
Charlie Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 No, it's simply the Wii, not even Nintendo Wii. I think he meant WiiConnect24. He knew it was called the Wii. He's not a noob.... Did you know that the spare PS3 power is being used to help cure diseases? Maybe it can/will do something similar.
The fish Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 To see this in a different light, the P$£ will be using power you have paid far to much for and isn't all being used anyway, for something you don't want it to be doing? Anyway it's a nice idea, but it's not really going to make people run out an buy one, is it? You might as well give the money directly to Cancer Reserch UK or similar...
Balfron Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 Well you guys are lucky that my browser just deleted my post for some reason... You can have my abridged version instead: There are way too many childish fanboys in this forum and they really hamper discussion, I've seen it time and time again in this forum. I did copy and paste quotes but I can't be bothered doing it again. Suffice to say that a thread about scientific research should never have degenerated into bringing out comments like "And beat Sony...", "EGASP! TAKE THAT BACK!" (note the capitals, thats how a 10yo American child who plays Halo posts on forums) and "BLASPHEMY". I hate to say it guys but it really is pathetic. I don't want to make a petition to try and change the name to Nintendo Go, I think you need to read what I wrote a bit more carefully. Fish you miss my point, I don't want to make people buy a Wii, I just want to try and help a little. The power consumption of computers is almost negligable when you are paying your bill (although across the country of course it does add up). And throwing money at things doesn't always help. If organisations ask for computer power I suspect that is what they need. Thank system_error, thats more like it! And to whoever said that its too hard to turn the Wii into a computer......

That my friend was called sarcasm.
Raven Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 im a scientist!!! and im sure that the wiiconnect24 aint gonna help me any...
pokekid Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Did you know that the SPARE PS3 power is being used to help cure diseases? Maybe it can/will do something similar. SPARE power?!? If sony want to charge that much we should have all the power!!!!! And its more likely the 360 will have more spare power if you convert the heat the power supply emits into something useful!
Balfron Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 These things work when the computer is idle, so original console price has nothing to do with it. Can we please stop criticising the PS3, its not what this thread is for. Why do you feel the need to post things like "death to the ps3" and "its the same as a bloody ps2 with better graphics"?

You already flamed me in your previouspost and nothing has been said since, so your post is technically spam. Just give it a rest, I was joking with the comments before. And as for calling me a Nintendo fanboy, it would explain why I'm planning on buying an Xbox360 and Wii. All I've seen of your posts on this forum is complaining because no one thinks the same way as you or because you have no sense of humour, bugger off if you're going to be an unfriendly member of the community. EDIT: Sorry if that sounded rude, I'm a bit annoyed at the moment with something else.

Umm, he hasn't posted any spam at all. He didn't call you a fanboy, read his post properly. He didn't flame everybody, if anything, you flamed him. Which you obviously didn't do with the first one in the thread. Nintendo Go was the name of a mockup created before Nintendo revealed the Wii fully. It wasn't even a codename. Set up a petition, but the Wii has begun manufacturing, so nothing you do can change it. Kindly show me where he said he wanted to change the name.

No no, he said he wanted a petition about the power saviong function thingymabob.
