Twozzok Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Frets on Fire is a game of musical skill and fast fingers. The aim of the game is to play guitar with the keyboard as accurately as possible. Basically the game is like guitar hero, except rather than using a plastic guitar you use your keyboard. http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/uv/fretsonfire/ It is really fun, though I reccomend going through the tutorial first, as it is rather amusing.
Bogbas Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Nice now I don't have to spend 120€ for the game + ps2. Hmm if I only could get a hold of the actual controller... I have an adapter for ps1/2 gamepads (I need it for a dance mat)
The Bard Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Why don't you just learn to play guitar? Guitar hero and this are just shit alternatives.
Shorty Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 So much fun! My only issue is the gap between F4 and F5 and the fact that I have one of those keyboards with shortcuts along the top. Also the tutorial sucks, it's funny but it doesn't teach you shit. Anyway this is great I had seen this somewhere recently but not checked it out til I realised what it was! Thanks for the link
Bogbas Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Why don't you just learn to play guitar? Guitar hero and this are just shit alternatives. I would if someone would have got me into some lessons when I was a kid... Now I don't have the time for it. And these are games meant to be fun. I don't think that it's going show me anything in terms of playing a real guitar or anything. But it's just fun and as far as games go, that's fine by me. And I suck even at this...

Yeah, I suppose it can be pretty fun, but dude, you don't need lessons to learn how to play any instrument, all you need is a good ear, a good instrument, a few albums and the internet, it's not as hard as you think.
Shorty Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Why don't you just learn to play guitar? Guitar hero and this are just shit alternatives. That's just daft... this is a video game. That's like asking "why don't you just become a racer instead of playing a racing game" or "why don't you just raise a family instead of playing the Sims". Perhaps you should give this a go, it's fun and not really anything like playing a real guitar.

Perhaps you should give this a go, it's fun and not really anything like playing a real guitar. I've played guitar hero, songs like Walk and Symphony of destruction, and it's pretty much trying to emulate guitar on a simplified level. Thats precisely the reason I don't play games like Gran Turismo, I hate them, they're boring and shit and no fun at all. That's why I like F-Zero and Mario Kart. As for the sims, you don't seriously think that playing the sims is anything like raising a family do you? Thats just crazy talk. Learning to play guitar is a shitload more fun than playing guitar hero, or anything else for that matter.
Bren Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Yeah, I suppose it can be pretty fun, but dude, you don't need lessons to learn how to play any instrument, all you need is a good ear, a good instrument, a few albums and the internet, it's not as hard as you think. and time, lots and lots of it, which as he said. He doesnt have much of :P
The Bard Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 and time, lots and lots of it, which as he said. He doesnt have much of :P What is he, dead? You don't even need that much time, an hour or so each day is enough to do it.
Shorty Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 you don't seriously think that playing the sims is anything like raising a family do you? Thats just crazy talk. No... that was precisely my point. Anyway, I don't want to argue about it. I've played guitar for a few years now and I thought this was a lot of fun. I can finally sleep now because I got 100% (211 note streak) on the first song on easy which I was desperate to do before I stopped playing. Bit annoyed that the sexy girl's compliment was no different at 99% than 100 but hey.
AshMat Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Just had a go, this game is great fun. This is also where ahving a wireless keyboard comes in handy.
Guest Jordan Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Haha, you could hold it on the side Retro-Lover Personally, i love Guitar Hero. I can't play a guitar for shit and infact its proven that in some of the cases, its harder to play the game than on an actual guitar...
AshMat Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I do hold it on it's side, but i love jumping up and playing the first song (in easy mode of course) in the middle of the room.
Shorty Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Just tried the last track on "Amazing" for fun. It was actually not as tough as expected but I keep hitting the stupid shortcuts on the top of my keyboard and opening outlook express >.>
Roostophe Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I've been using Guitar Hero to train my pinky finger. It's slightly working because now I have easier control over my finger. Sounds ridiculous but it's true. Why does everybody seem to think that Guitar Hero is an alternative to playing guitar? It's not, if anything it's nothing like playing a real guitar. It's a lot different. Fair enough, you do use hammer-on's and pull-offs while playing, but, really, it isn't anything like playing guitar.
CVD Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Guital Hero is the only game making me want to buy a PS2. I see no point in playing guitar with a keyboard.
Eddage Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Damn it Twozzok, I thought they were actually releasing Guitar Hero on the PC, not some crappy (ok it could be good, I haven't played it yet ) internet version you play with your keyboard! I'm depressed now
Bogbas Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Guital Hero is the only game making me want to buy a PS2. I see no point in playing guitar with a keyboard. Did you try it And if the guitar that comes guitar hero can be bought separately, I'm getting it. I just hope that this thing becomes as succesful as stepmania. At the moment the songs I have downloaded are not in sync...
martinist Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 i really don't know how a game like this would work on a PC
Shorty Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 i really don't know how a game like this would work on a PC Why don't you try it then? It's free
