Cube Posted Wednesday at 11:42 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 11:42 AM Kuru Kuru Fever JP release: 2003 (Arcade) EU release: N/A NA release: N/A Developer: Takumi Publisher: Aruze N64 Magazine Score: N/A Out of all the Aleck 64 games, I enjoyed this one the most. It’s a colour matching puzzle game using fruit (which means no colourblind issues), which has an interesting mechanic. You need to match groups of four, but if you match four of your character’s favourite fruit, then your whole board will flip, pushing the bottom tiles to the top. Once the tiles drop down to the bottom, if there are any groups of three, these will now form a combo, and your area will then flip again, now groups of two will mix. This carries on (scoring any groups of two after each flip), and getting past 4 will trigger a fever and send loads of tiles to the next screen. I was having a ton of fun, but the CPU is a bit relentless – I went from having a clear screen to my entire area being filled due to an insane combo. Fun Remake or remaster? I’d definitely like to see this expanded with a few more modes as a full game. Official Ways to get the game There is no official way to play Kuru Kuru Fever 1 2
Cube Posted Thursday at 08:49 AM Author Posted Thursday at 08:49 AM Aleck Bordon Adventure: Tower & Shaft JP release: 2003 (Arcade) EU release: N/A NA release: N/A Developer: Aruze Publisher: Aruze N64 Magazine Score: N/A This is the second Aleck 64 game that got a Game Boy Advance release. While the title screen says “4th Story”, I can’t find any earlier Aleck Bordon, so I’m not sure if he’s named after the arcade hardware, or if it’s just a coincidence. This arcade game includes two different games: Tower & Shaft, both similar to auto jump games, like Sonic Jump and Doodle Jump. Tower In Tower, Aleck automatically runs, changing direction when he reaches the end of the screen. You hold a button to charge up a jump, but it resets if you hold it down for too long or if Aleck walks off the edge of the platform, making it very difficult to time right. Different platforms have different properties, such as moving down, bouncing Aleck, or making him faster, along with some powerups like a higher jump. Your goal is to get to the top of the tower. Shaft Shaft is the opposite of Tower, as you have to make your way to the bottom of the tower, with spikes heading down to harm you. If you go too fast and go past the bottom of the screen, you die. You have a health bar in this, and there are spiked platforms that cause you damage. Both games are simple and short, but extremely difficult. Fine Remake or remaster? This might work well as modes in a mobile game. Official Ways to get the game There is no official way to play Aleck Bordon Adventure: Tower & Shaft

Cube Posted Friday at 10:30 AM Author Posted Friday at 10:30 AM Hi Pai Paradise 2 JP release: 2004 (Arcade) EU release: N/A NA release: N/A Developer: Aruze Publisher: SETA N64 Magazine Score: N/A The final Aleck 64 game is unfortunately a fairly boring one: another sexy anime Mahjong game, this time it has something to do with going to a hot spring. I did notice that there are now hamster tiles, but I’m not sure if they do anything. ? Remake or remaster? If you really want to play this kind of sexy mahjong game, the Super Real Mahjong collection will fulfil what you want. Official Ways to get the game There is no official way to play Hi Pai Paradise 2 (I do wonder if they repurposed the arcade units from the first game or something) 1

Cube Posted yesterday at 08:14 AM Author Posted yesterday at 08:14 AM Portal 64 JP release: N/A EU release: N/A NA release: N/A Developer: Valve, lambertjamesd Publisher: N/A N64 Magazine Score: N/A I wanted to end things on a high note, so I looked at more recent unofficial releases. There’s a small homebrew community, such as the N64 Brew group, making some fun little minigames in jam sessions, plus a few reproduction cartridge releases of games that aren’t really designed for the N64. But it was this partial port of Portal that interested me the most, as it really shows what the N64 can do. This version of Portal works on a real N64. There are some graphical settings relating to how deep portals can go (essentially, how many times portals can repeat until you get a texture, instead of seeing more rooms), so you can stretch your console to the limit, but it’s an amazingly built conversion. Everything works and feels how it should – the physics and momentum is great, and placing, looking, and going through portals is wonderful. It even has the full dialogue from GLaDOS. Unfortunately, only the start of the game is here, and it ends shortly after getting the full portal gun (so you can at least play with placing both portals yourself). Valve messaged the developer and suggested they stop, because of Nintendo’s N64 libraries being involved in the coding, so the project was cancelled. Still, even this early version is a wonderful example of what the N64 hardware was capable of. Great Remake or remaster? Well, we have the original Portal. A little spruce up would be nice, though (keeping the original style, not like the hideous RTX version). Official Ways to get the game This fan project is no longer available officially due to a takedown notice from Valve. The original Portal is available on Steam, Xbox Series (Portal: Still Alive via Backwards Compatibility), and Portal: Companion Collection on Switch. 1 3
Dcubed Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago (edited) I tried it out on a real N64 via the Everdrive, and it really is just mindblowing how well done the demake is. Just goes to show how much untapped potential there really was, and how modern programming knowledge and techniques can squeeze so much more juice out of these ancient consoles But yeah, shout-out to the Switch version of Portal 1 & 2. One of the best Switch ports out there, runs like a dream and has full motion control aiming support too! Edited 20 hours ago by Dcubed 2

My personal list was 431, with the 64DD, Aleck 64 and prototypes/unreleased games. For official N64 games my count is 391, but there's debate over some regional sports games, as some people count similar games with different teams as the same game (even though they have more differences then lots of yearly sports games). 1

There are FAR worse games out there than that one.
