I was flicking through the channels last night and caught the final hour or so of the original 'Total Recall' on ITV which reminded me that I'd recently watched the 2012 remake Total Recall on Netflix. It's one of the dullest films I've ever watched in almost every aspect, it has none of the charm, complexity or crazy design of the original and must surely go down as one of the most pointless remakes in film history, especially when the original is one of the most apt Philip K Dick adaptations there has been.

I've watched plenty of rubbish over the last few weeks, including 'X-Men: First Class' and 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' which were both fairly entertaining but as with most superhero fare pretty shallow and uninteresting too. One Marvel film that I expected to dislike but really enjoyed was Guardians Of The Galaxy which I think is only so good because it feels so cut off from the rest of the Marvel canon, feeling more like a dumb sci-fi actioner than a superhero movie. I think James Gunn's Troma experience and slightly offbeat sense of humour was an important factor in selling the chaotic characters and their relationships to each other.

I also got round to finally watching Akira, just an outstanding piece of work in every area.

Not usually one for hyperbole but Manchester By The Sea is easily one of the best films i've ever seen. The acting, the mis-en-scene, the score, everything was perfect, a really tragic story told beautifully.
