Londragon Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Had a great session last night, this game is brilliant!! It is amazing. I'm only up to level 8. Had some good online sessions, but then like to go back and play through again in single player to get a few extra MODs.

View post in Miiverse Still, a boss fight against a giant Samus could be interesting if well done... shame they kept her in Morph Ball form the entire time, made her move very slowly except for occasions when using the Boost Ball and in the second and third phases making her move on Spider Ball tracks... add to the fact that why would Samus get captured by the Space Pirates in the first place? Hero-of-Time Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 I'm not sure if it was because of the rumours of Metroid Prime hitting Switch or reading through WakerJr's topic about returning to complete unbeaten games, whatever the reason was I finally sat down to play this game. I remember the furthest I ever got when I originally played it was mission 7. I found the boss on this level very frustrating and getting one shotted and having to do the stage again from the start was enough to put me off. I was hoping I would get further this time around... I started the game from scratch. I felt this was necessary as it had been so long since I originally played it that I probably wouldn't have been able to jump straight in and remember the controls. Far better to ease myself in. To be honest I found the controls quite fiddly. I hate the nub that is on the newer 3DS models. The thing just isn't responsive enough and I was constantly at odds with it. I stuck with it though. I managed to get to chapter 7 again and after a few attempts, I finally beat the boss. It was super close though. It was one of those situations where one hit would kill me and one hit would kill him. I took the risk and got the win. The thing reminded me of Del Rol Le from Phantasy Star Online. After finishing level 7, I decided to try the other control scheme that doesn't use the nub and instead uses the gyro to aim. This control setup was far batter than what I was using. I didn't use the gyro much (lock-on done most of the work) but the layout of the rest of controls was much more to my liking. Had I used this from the start I think I wouldn't have struggled with the level 7 boss. I called it a day after playing a couple more stages. This morning, I was curious if anyone else was still playing this and so I decided to try playing the campaign online. It took a while but to my surprise I found someone else to play with. Some person named R.K. joined my game and we stormed through a lot of the missions, reaching mission 17 of 22. I found it a lot of fun, with my team mate freezing enemies and me finishing them off with a missile or charged shot. Whilst playing with this person I also got to grips with the different mods you can use for your armour, as well as the different weapon setups that can be used. Out of all of the missions that we completed I think there were only 2 that we didn't achieve the 3 medal ranking on. After lunch, I fired up the online mode again and found a couple of Japanese players. Both seemed happy to help me and we carried on with the rest of my missions. Again, we done well as a team and earned a fair few medals. Spoiler It was great having to fight Samus. Granted, she was just a ball throughout the whole fight but it was a fun fight nonetheless. The secret ending was a bit baffling and reminded me of the Company from the Alien films, constantly trying to take a live sample back with them. The Metroid being caught and then freed is no doubt going to have consequences. You know what? Over the past couple of days I've really enjoyed my time with Federation Force. The game is no doubt more fun in co-op but even playing it in single player was enjoyable. Trying to do the optional tasks in each stage, which in turn increase your score so that you can earn 3 medals per stage, is very satisfying and offers some great replay value. Out of the 66 medals available I think I have 50 odd. I'm very tempted to try and get the all 66 of them. I also enjoyed the variety on offer in each of the missions. Some had you guard an object, others had you escort an item, while others were standard stages that just required you to eliminate enemies whilst going from A to B. One stage that I found pretty cool was where you were had to guide balls/bombs to a catapult and fire them at the ship that is chasing you. This is where the Blast Ball mechanics came into the main game and I thought it was quite fun and unique. Another mission I enjoyed was one that saw you getting kicked out of your mech suit and having to traverse the stage without it. When I played this in co-op mode each of the players got their suit back at different points and so the person who got theirs early on had to use it to protect the others. Is this the game hardcore Metroid fans wanted? Obviously not, but Next Level Games have created a fun little game here and I'm glad I finally gave it a chance and played through it from start to end. 3
Dcubed Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 (edited) Yeah, I quite like Federation Force; it gets a really bum rap because of the narrative surrounding Nintendo in general at the time of its release (2015), but it’s a solid Monster Hunter esc take on the Metroid universe. That being said? If there is one major flaw this game does have? It’s that it is not balanced for single player at all. The bosses have Insta-death moves that are ridiculously unfair when you don’t have a teammate to revive you!! Play it in multiplayer though and you’ll probably quite enjoy it if you like Monster Hunter style games Edited September 23, 2022 by Dcubed

Yeah, chapter 7 took me a fair few attempts because of this. There are have been able to equip something like a revive mod to get past such situations. I did really enjoy my time with it though. It was great playing it online and finding people still willing to do the early missions. I like that you can start with one other person as well and not needing a full squad to start a mission. I'm tempted to fire up Triforce Heroes and see if people are still playing that online. I imagine games are harder to find on that seeing as you need two extra people and not just the one.
