Shadow of Mordor

I'm still powering away with this and I've finally "understood" how the survival challenges work.

I have to say that the herb-hunting system in this game is excellent. It reminds me of how painful it was in Xenoblade yet how easy it is here. Or easier, rather.

For those of you that don't know, each herb is given a symbol with a colour, like a red cross. In each region of the map, you'll find numerous symbols next to it telling you which herbs are available during that region. It's far, far, faaaaaaar better than the painful random-item-pickup in Xenoblade which I found infuriating. It made collecting a real pain in the arse and down to pot luck. At least this feels like there is some sort of logic behind it.

So bought this last week and have been playing bits and pieces of it over the week and impressions so far aren't as good as others.

I've played a few story missions, side quests and taken down quite a few of the chiefs so far but in all of it, I'm beginning to find it repetitive. I know the combat is straight out of the Batman games but it just doesn't feel that great here (if anything, it's a little finicky, particularly executions). It's definitely reminding me a lot of the Assassin's Creed games, which I'm taking is what they were aiming for somewhat, but having never really gotten on well with the main crux of the gameplay in those games (the exception is Black Flag but that was more because of the sailing and pirate ships), I'm getting much the same feel here as I did from those :hmm:

I'm gonna keep plugging away at it over the next couple of days and see if it can improve for me. Hoping it does, as there have been some interesting moments like having 3 captains show up one after the other and bring their goons with them and I had to slowly pick off uruks one by one and do a lot of running away/kiting just to be able to survive long enough to have 1 of the captains run away in fear. He's yet to reappear so far but when he does, he'll meet my blade

I actually preferred the gameplay here to Arkham City. Granted, I'm sure if I go back to Arkham City knowing what I know of the combat system now, I'd probably favour that more.

I remember starting off Shadow of Mordor and feeling like an absolute sissy. I couldn't do anything. But, you'll get awesome power-ups and it really becomes fun later on.
