basscadet Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 My parents recently bought a glorious 40" hd-tv. I know, "La victoria siempre" won't support hd, but will it support progressive scan in Europe? As you probably all know, the gamecube supported progressive scan in the US, but this feature was left out in Europe. The reason obviously was the fact that we are always one tv-generation behind. Luckily now, hd-tv are getting cheaper and cheaper. High-definition displays are gradually dripping in European households and sooner or later everybody will have one. So the 2 big questions are: Are we going to be able to play our rev-games in progressive scan, and will our pal-gamecube games be compatible as well ? P.S.: I used to be a regular poster a while ago (especially preceding the gamecube launch), but for some reason my account vanished. oh well
Tekki Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I sure hope they do. I've got a Dell 2005FPW and when I played my mate's PS2 on it, it all looked a bit weird and went alarmingly fast. I read this was because the lack of progressive scan. I sure hope they support widescreen and progressive scan. Also, this is a new site isn't it? I think you were on cube-europe before lol.
DCK Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I hope so too, but I can't say. My grandparents own a TV that supports progressive scan but it's the only one I've ever seen. Also, I don't know if 100 Hz equals progressive scan 50 Hz - because if it does, there's no way they can ignore it.
Hellfire Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I don't think that progressive scan and the frequency have anything to do with each other. Anyway I thought that the EU GC also supported 480p, are you sure about this? Another clarification, you don't need a hdtv for 480p, edtv also support 480p, the differentce is in the resolution.
DCK Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Hmm, now you mention it - the European Cube does support 480p because if you start up US games with a Freeloader you can run them in progressive scan. I'll try it out on my TV later if it works (on my 100 Hz TV that is).
basscadet Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 uhm, don't you need the component cable (which is an optional accessory in the US, alongside the s-video cable) to display progressive scan? I think you can't output a progressive scan signal through a rgb or scart cable.
YenRug Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Component cable is the US equivalent of RGB output, literally meaning that it transmits the red, green and blue components of the signal separately.
NeoBlizz Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 You can only do Progressive if you have the componentcable on the digital output on Gamecube.
basscadet Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 So let's hope you can switch it on manually in the "home" menu. Otherwise the pal gamecube games won't be able to. Would be cool to see some graphical improvement in my old cube games.
Nick Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I don't see any reason why Nintendo can't support 525p. But then, they omitted HD, so perhaps progressive scan will once again be dropped from PAL version games. *sigh*
mike-zim Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 at the end of the day will it make that much of a difference? the rev will be built around game play. that is my major reason for getting one
knightendo Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 was it not only later shipments of the GCN that ninty left out the progressive scan function...?
Hellfire Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 was it not only later shipments of the GCN that ninty left out the progressive scan function...? I think the only change was that they didn't ship it with a digital out.
knightendo Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I think the only change was that they didn't ship it with a digital out. ah yes, i remember now. cheers.
DCK Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I tried it and I couldn't get the Cube to ask me for progressive scan . Whether it's the Cube, the cable, the TV or the games (F-Zero GX and Tales of Symphonia) I don't know.
pedrocasilva Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hmm, now you mention it - the European Cube does support 480p because if you start up US games with a Freeloader you can run them in progressive scan. I'll try it out on my TV later if it works (on my 100 Hz TV that is).yeah it does... the reason it was left out is because in europe the PAL progressive scan standard was still unfinished... Xbox doesn't support it either in PAL games... now Xbox 360 supports it those same PAL games... I think revolution is not going to leave that out as it would have been implemented in the cube if the standard was finished back in 2001.
Natli Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I read something about having to press and hold the B button on your controller at startup to enable progressive scan (on cubes that have it ). After everything I've read about the subject I believe the Revolution will have progressive scan.
Android18a Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I want it to run in HD TT_TT My Xbox 360 is a thing of beauty in HD, and going back to "regular" resolution is horrible! Playing GC will never be the same now...
Twilight Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Miyamoto once said that every Revolution game will have 480p as a standard. I believe that includes PAL games too...
Konfucius Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I read something about having to press and hold the B button on your controller at startup to enable progressive By doing this you enable the 60Hz mode in some games, not progressive scan.
Nick Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Miyamoto once said that every Revolution game will have 480p as a standard. I believe that includes PAL games too... But then they would no longer be PAL games, and would only be compatible on NTSC compatible TVs. But then, they omitted complete PAL conversion of Metroid Prime 2 and Geist. Maybe Nintendo would leave our superior resolution for a few more flicks a second? I hope not.
YenRug Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 By doing this you enable the 60Hz mode in some games, not progressive scan. It's how you enabled Progressive scan in NTSC games, it was only the 60Hz mode in PAL games.
DCK Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Yeah, I tried holding B when loading games with the Freeloader but it had no effect. I guess I need another cable.
Bogbas Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Hmmm.. If i remember correctly it said somewhere that the PAL version of the game ikaruga had progressive scan support. Don't know how it would work though, ther isn't any mention of it in the games manual. Or I just missed it
