Dcubed Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 (edited) http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/8/17/3250066/onlive-cloud-gaming-service-closing-staff-laid-off Holy Crap if true!!! Sony really made the right choice if this is the case! (perhaps their survival hinged off a deal with them that went sour in favour of Gaikai?) I wonder what will happen to people's purchases... Edit: Checked out Brian Fargo's Twitter... https://twitter.com/BrianFargo 31s Brian Fargo @BrianFargo I don't think there is an internet "undo" button they can hit. 2m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo The OnLive employee has sent a "recall" message on the email. Now what does that mean? 18m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo BTW I don't work at Onlive so it doesn't affect me or Wasteland 2. 32m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo Apparently a new company will be formed but everyone is losing their job. Don't know what that means. 37m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo @K2theSwift @BillyShibley Yes they did... 38m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo Their employees are sending out emails that #OnLive will be closed by the end of the day. 41m Brian Fargo @BrianFargo Just received an email that OnLive is closed as of today! And what is supposedly the original email that was sent to Onlive employees... http://www.twitlonger.com/show/it6ddh Here is the email that I received from the OnLive employee at 11:37am this morning. I wanted to send a note that by the end of the day today, OnLive as an entity will no longer exist. Unfortunately, my job and everyone else's was included. A new company will be formed and the management of the company will be in contact with you about the current initiatives in place, including the titles that will remain on the service. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you and I’m sure our path with cross again. Edited August 17, 2012 by Dcubed
Debug Mode Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Was just about to post the same thing. I wonder what impact this will have on future streaming services. And Ouya as well actually, they were really gearing up for Onlive to be on the thing.
Dcubed Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Hmmm, well Onlive just sent out a response saying that they're not closing... The company's official Twitter account is currently still tweeting, with no indication that there are troubles at the company. "We don't respond to rumors and have no comment," said an OnLive representative when asked for clarification. A statement from OnLive's director of corporate communications refutes allegations that the company is folding, saying "We don't respond to rumors, but of course not." Mind you though, we've seen this sort of response before only to see the opposite being true... And if the guy tweeting here is in the know & is being truthful, why would such an email get sent out in the first place?
Debug Mode Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Maybe restructuring and re-branding then? God knows what's going on.
Dcubed Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 (edited) Ok so now Gamasutra are confirming that all Onlive employees have been layed off... http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/176180/ The company might still exist for now, but it seems that all the employees are gone. Guess the Twitter guy just wasn't in the know. Edit: On site sources claiming seeing people moving out with leaving boxes... https://twitter.com/martyn_williams/status/236566149985337344/photo/1 Think it's safe to say that it's happening. Cube Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/onlive-losing-at-least-50-percent-of-staff-purchased-by-unkno/ At least 50 percent of the staff have been cut. Another (unknown) company has purchased OnLive and will offer jobs to a percentage of the staff. Could Microsoft have swooped in after Sony's deal? The only other options are EA or Valve. Valve do like working with minimal staff (don't they have one of the highest profit-to-staff-member ratios?), but I don't think they would do it in this manner.
Choze Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Why would anyone buy them? Its not like Gakai who offered some unique solutions to lag.
heroicjanitor Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/source-onlive-ceo-showed-no-remorse-when-announcing-layoffs/ So seems like the first order of business with the new company is to sue Gaikai for patent infringement. FUCKING SIGH. So sick of patents.
Rummy Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I'm out of the loop, what's this about Sony deals and someone called Gaikai? What do they do?
